The Tenth Day of Christmas

Changing the Past….a Christmas Miracle

He went home once again to his empty apartment after dropping Nora and Matthew off at her house. A smile crossed his face as he remembered what a wonderful time he had had, it seemed they all did, but then it ended as it always did much to soon. He shook his head as he loosened his tie and made his way over to the couch. He picked up a picture of him and Drew from one of the few fishing trips they had managed to take and settled back onto the couch to close his eyes for just a minute…..

Asa looked over at the tree, “Who’s that gift for, I don’t remember seeing that one earlier.” Nora and Bo exchanged sly smiles as Bo made his way over to the gift. He picked it up and glanced at the tag, handing it to Asa, “Looks like its for you, Pa.” He returned to his position next to Nora, taking her hand in his. Asa looked at the gift a puzzled expression on his face, then looking up at all the faces in the room, “From Santa?” No one claimed the gift. Shaking his head, he opened it, removing the tissue paper, he found a picture frame with what looked like an x-ray inside it. “Whose idea of a joke is this?” he asked picked it up and showing it to his family that surrounded him, “Pa look at the picture frame.” Bo said trying to contain his smile as he pulled Nora closer. Asa turned the frame back around, “#1 Granpa” he read aloud. “Which one of you gave this to me?” he looked at Jessica, Joey and Kevin. All of them looking at each other and shaking their head’s no. Then he turned towards Drew and Kelly, they too shook their heads. Slowly he turned towards Bo and Nora, who seemed awfully quiet all night come to think of it. “Really?” he asked. It was obvious by Bo’s expression, “Congratulations son, Nora. I knew you would give me an heir.” The statement started to rile her up, but a squeeze from Bo, and she realized it didn’t matter. She was happy, she was more than happy, she had Bo, and they were having a child, Rachel was happy and healthy, Drew was happy and healthy and madly in love with Kelly, life was good, and a little ribbing from Asa was not going to ruin her holiday. “Yes, Asa, your going to have another heir.” “Well, how long have you known?” Bo looked at Nora, smiling remembering how he found out about the baby.

**Flashback to the night of the gallery opening**

He walks in the house, “Nora, are you about…” seeing the table set he stops mid-thought. She walks in, carrying a champagne glass and wearing only a robe. “What’s going on?” she continued to walk towards him, not speaking only smiling. “We need to be at the gallery in half an hour.” She shook her head. “Drew and Kelly are going in our place.” “Oh, but I promised Joey..” “I called and explained, he’s okay.” “Explained?” By this time Nora was in his arms and he had no intention of going to any gallery opening, but he was still curious as to what was going on. “Yes, I explained that you and I had some celebrating to do.” As he continued to rub his hands up and down her back, “And just what is it we are celebrating?” She slipped out of his grasp and went to pick up the other champagne glass, carrying it over to him, “Thirsty?” Playing along, he took a sip, and a strange look crossed his face, “Nora this is cider!” “I know.” “Why are we drinking cider to celebrate something?” She walked over to him again, placing her hand on his cheek, “Because that’s all us mommies are allowed to drink, daddy.” “Nora what are you talking…mommy…daddy..” The realization hit him, “We’re pregnant.” She nodded. “We’re PREGNANT!” He hollered as he picked her up and spun her around, then just as quickly put her down, “Oh oh are you okay? Sit down, what do you need?” “Bo honey, I’m fine, I’m just a couple months along, I went to the Dr today and had It confirmed and I just wanted the two of us to celebrate alone tonite so I called Drew and Joey and I hope you don’t mind but..” He silenced her rambling with a gentle kiss, that soon became more passionate. He pulled back finally, as they were both out of breath. “We’re having a baby!”

Nora walked down the stairs to what could easily be labeled a disaster area, whispering as to not wake Matthew, “Bo Buchanan, what on Earth happened down here?” Innocently he looked up at her, “What do you mean?” She swept her arm around, indicating the entire living room, “Oh, well I just thought I would pick up a few things for Matthew.” She smiled, she knew Bo would be a wonderful father, but she never realized she was going to fall in love with him all over again, which she had done every day since she told him of her pregnancy, he was overprotective and suffocating at times but always she came first, and when Matthew was born, she actually saw the tears on his cheeks, and Bo Buchanan NEVER cried. “Honey, you realize he’s just barely 10 months old. He can’t use most of these things for at least another couple of years.” He shrugged, “I guess I went a little overboard. Maybe I’m a little more like Asa than I like to admit.” She wrapped her arms around him as she joined him on the floor surrounded by packages, “Well at least you picked up one of his more endearing qualities. I love you Bo Buchanan.” He turned to face her, “I love you Nora Buchanan. And with that he leaned in kissing her gently on the lips.

Nora walked in the house shaking the snow off, a smile crossed her lips as she looked up and noticed her two favorite men sleeping on the couch. As if sensing her presence he woke up and opening his eyes gave her a wink. She walked over to them, and kneeling beside the couch, she placed a kiss on his lips, then brushed the hair back off their son’s forehead, placing a soft kiss where the hair had been. “Tough day daddy?” “Oh well you know, we had some serious shopping to do for the woman in our lives.” “Hmmmm, and what did Matthew get his mommy?” Bo smiled, “You’re bad, you know that,” He pulled her closer for a kiss. Then “ It’s a secret and you need to wait until tomorrow.” She stood up and walked towards the stairs, “Then I’m going upstairs for a nap, seeing as you two already had yours.” Playing hurt, he pouted, “Are you sure you don’t want company,” He slowly stood up, making sure not to wake Matthew and went to follow her upstairs, she stopped and waited for him. “You’re awfully good at that you know.” “ At what?” She nodded towards Matthew in his arms, “Making those you love feel safe, as if nothing could harm them as long as your arms are around them.” “Well, that my dear is true, because I don’t plan on letting anything happen to you, or this little one here.” He leaned in to kiss her, “I love you mommy Buchanan” “I love you too daddy Buchanan.”

“Cookies, I want more cookies!” Bo was greeted by the sound of his son’s voice as soon as he entered the house. Followed by the crashing of several pans, and his wife’s voice full of desperation. He smiled as he took the bag he had brought home and walked to the kitchen looking for the source of the noise. Walking in he saw his son and wife covered in flour, a garbage can full of burnt cookies, icing all over the counters. He set the bag down on the top of the refrigerator, after taking a cookie out of it, handing it to his squalling son who had a tear stained face and walked over to his wife, placing a kiss on her red-icing covered nose, “Hey Rudolph!” he licked his lips, “Yum.” She took the spatula and pointed it at him, “Watch it buster.” He could see the tears welling up in her eyes, “Long day huh?” He pulled her into an embrace, “Oh Bo, all I wanted to do was make Christmas cookies, just a little flour and sugar, and look, the kitchen’s a mess, Matthew’s a mess, I’m a mess” pulling back and looking at his flour covered suit, “and now you’re a mess.” She let the tears that had been threatening all day to fall. “Honey, that is what the dry cleaner is for, tell you what, I’ll take champ up and get him all cleaned up and lay him down for a nap, while you finish up in here, then you come up, and I’ll get you all cleaned up and lie you down for a nap. Okay?” She nodded as she wiped the tears on her hand. He gave her a quick kiss, and picked Matthew up off the floor, “Come on champ, time for a bath.” 20 minutes later Nora walked in her bathroom, which smelled like vanilla, a warm bath had been drawn and her red teddy was hanging on the back of the door next to a fluffy towel, as soon as she stepped into the water she felt all her tension begin to ebb away, she closed her eyes and leaned back in the tub. Bo walked in wearing his pajama bottoms, and began caressing her arms with a wet sponge, “mmmm, that feels good,” she opened her eyes, and noticing his attire, “aren’t you joining me?” He shook his head, “You’ve had a long day, just enjoy this okay?” She nodded her head and closed her eyes, letting his hands do their work of draining the stress from her body, “I love you Bo.” “I love you too Red.”

“Whatcha looking at there Red?” He climbed into bed next to Nora. “Your son’s Christmas list.” He pointed to himself, “My son, I thought he was our son, I know for a fact it took both of us to make him, and last time I checked he most definitely had your gorgeous brown eyes.” She looked at him over the top of her glasses, “Nice try, but I am not letting you out of this one. I can’t believe you handed him an FAO Schwartz catalog and said circle whatever you want for Christmas, AFTER your father said, that SANTA brings everything a little boy asks for, especially if his name is Buchanan.” Bo chuckled as he recalled the conversation between Matthew and Asa that he and Nora had interrupted the week before. “Well, look honey, we only got him the few items we agreed upon, so why are you still upset?” He tried to pull her into an embrace, but was met with resistance. “Because we both know, whatever we didn’t get your father did.” She threw the magazine on the floor and set her glasses on the nightstand. “How are we ever going to teach him he can’t have everything he wants as long as Asa keeps spoiling him like this?” He once again tried to pull her close to him, and this time she allowed him to. “Nora, honey, I know that you don’t like bringing Matthew up like this, but it’s really not something he has to learn, not getting everything, cuz let’s face it, he’s pretty much set for life, just like I was, BUT I still turned out okay, and so did Clint, and all Clint’s kids, and look at Drew, I know the silver spoon treatment is hard, but what’s important is the value we teach him to go along with the stuff.” He placed a kiss on her cheek, “and there is no one who can instill values in our little boy like you can.” She swallowed hard, “Thank you Bo,” she turned to look at him, as she placed her hand on his face, “I love you.” “I love you too.”

*December 25, 2003*

“Mom, Dad, wake up Santa came, Santa came.” Bo woke up with a start from his dream, surely it was a dream Matthew was yelling at Nora’s house not his…what was that on his arm, he slowly opened his eyes, and found himself staring right into the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen, the eyes of his son, the eyes of his soulmate…..”Nora?” He questioned, not believing she was really there, in his arms, as he looked around their bedroom, he shook his head, “Too much eggnog last night santa?” she raised her eyebrows at him, as the confused expression continued to play upon his face. “This is real, us, together.” “Wow….you really did have more than I thought” “MOM! DAD! COME ON!” Nora placed a quick kiss on his lips as she stood to put on her robe, “come on dad, our son doesn’t have a lot of patience on Christmas, you really should know that after last year when he woke up at 5, we should be happy he made it til 6 this year.” She laughed as she headed for the door, “I’ll go start the coffee.” He looked at his left hand and saw the familiar gold band in its rightful place, slowly he got out of bed, reacquainting himself with his room, their room, it was the same as he remembered it except for the pictures of the three of them, but the one that caught his eye, telling him it was all real, was the one of he and Nora, in the hospital, his son in his arms, as he placed a kiss on her lips. “It’s all real.” She walked back upstairs wondering what was keeping him, she found him, tears on his cheeks, holding the picture from the hospital, “That’s my favorite picture too,” she smiled as she leaned over him and placed a kiss on his cheek, “now you going to come down…” she was interrupted by him pulling her into a tight embrace, “I love you Nora,” She looked at him, wondering why the sudden emotion, so unlike him, “I love you too. You okay?” He smiled, “Oh yeah, I’m okay, I’m more than okay, I’m perfect.” He leaned in and kissed her, as the doorbell rang, he looked at her “ who could it be at this hour?” She looked at him, “My guess is Drew, Kelly, and the baby, Matthew called them before I made it downstairs, you know his brother is his hero.” “Drew is here?” His voice cracked. “Of course Bo, we do this every year….Rachel should be here any minute, now are you coming, because your son isn’t going to wait to open his presents much longer.” He grabbed his robe and pulled it on, a broad smile on his face and followed Nora down the stairs, as they reached the bottom, he pulled her back towards him, and leaned down to kiss her, breaking the kiss “I love you Mrs. Buchanan.” “I love you Mr. Buchanan.” “Ewww, can you stop that so I can open presents?” Matthew implored. Laughing Nora headed for her spot on the couch, Bo stood there a moment, and looked at his family, Rachel had arrived as was sitting in the chair, Drew, Kelly and the baby were on the floor, Matthew was in the middle of the presents, and Nora sat on the couch looking between her family and her husband, he closed his eyes, and thanked God, for miracles, his family, and most importantly giving his life back to him.

Merry Christmas….tis the season of miracles.
