- Christmas Without You
-
- Bo couldn't help but smile
as he made his way home from Nora's house. He thought back to
just a half hour earlier and how natural it was for the two of
them to sit and talk about their son, how natural it was to feel
like a family. He had missed out on so much and Nora had bore
so much of the parenting responsibility solely on her shoulders
for so long. He thought back to the way she looked when he was
watching her from her office door, and the feelings that came
over him. He had never felt so at peace. He leaned his head back
against the seat and waited for the lights to turn green. He
thought about Gabrielle and how strained things between them
still were. He had to get thoughts of Nora out of his head, he
was with Gabrielle, he loved Gabrielle...didn't he? The honking
from the car behind him brought him out of his thoughts. He waved
his apologies and made his way home.

- Nora turned out the porch
light and made her way into the darkened living room. She walked
over to the fireplace and picked up the poker, slowly turning
the logs around until the fire roared once again. She glanced
upstairs and thought about their son and how natural it had felt
for Bo to be there with her, talking about Matthew, how natural
it felt to be a family. She thought back to that moment in her
office when she had caught him staring at her. For a moment she
had seen something familiar in his eyes but in an instant it
was gone, so quickly that she thought she imagined it. She knew
her feelings for her ex-husband were changing but there was nothing
she could do about them now. He wasn't free, his heart belonged
to another. She slowly climbed the stairs and got ready to call
it a night.

- Bo walked into the garrett;
throwing his coat across the arm of the couch, his keys, badge
and cell phone on the coffee table in front of him. He ran his
hands through his hair as he rolled the kinks out of his neck,
it had been a long day. He walked into the bedroom, expecting
to find her asleep, but instead he found an empty bed. He walked
over to the closet and noticed his clothes were the only ones
hanging there. He glanced back over at the bed and noticed the
piece of paper lying on her pillow. He walked over and picked
it up, walking into the kitchen as he read it. He placed it on
the counter and opened the refrigerator, pulling out a cold beer
and a left over slice of pizza. He picked up the note and finished
reading it, crumbling it up into a ball and throwing it in the
trash can when he was done. She had left, she had made her decision
and this time he wasn't running after her. If this is what she
wanted, if she couldn't accept his relationship with his son,
and his friendship with Nora then he wasn't going to beg her
to stay. He walked over and flipped on the radio and walked over
to the window; looking out at the twinkling lights of the city.
The words to the song, relaying what he was feeling in his heart.
-
- White Christmas and I'm
blue
Like fireworks with no fuse
Christmas without you
- The fireplace keeps burning
and my thoughts keep turning
The pages of memories of time spent with you
Old Christmas songs we knew and used to make love to
Make it hard to get used to
Christmas without you
-

- She had tried to fall asleep
but thoughts of the past few hours kept invading her mind. She
tied her robe tight around her as she made her way to the kitchen.
She stood in front of the refrigerator for a moment before pulling
out a cold beer and a left over slice of pizza. She walked past
the radio and flicked it on, before settling on the couch in
front of the fire. She stared at the fire, the crackling and
popping the only other sounds in the room, as the words to the
song put into words the feelings that were coursing through her.
-
- Christmas without you
White Christmas and I'm blue
I love you I miss you
So sad but so true
Christmas without you
- Like a mystery with no
clues
Like fireworks with no fuse
Christmas without you
- The sweetest gift I know
would be if the new snow
Could fall on your footsteps on this Christmas Eve
The most joyous Christmas if luck could be with us
Would be if Saint Nicholas brought you home to me.

- Bo placed his bottle down
on the table; swallowing the last bite of pizza before lying
down on the couch. He stared up at the ceiling and thought of
a very special Christmas; a Christmas when their love was still
new...
-
- "Come here little girl.
Why don't you tell Santa Claus what you want for Christmas."
-
- She whispers in his ear,
"Okay let's go!"
-
- "No no wait wait wait
wait I have a present for Santa."
-
- "Give it to me later."
-
- "No no no, it can't
wait."
-
- "Okay, then where is
it?"
-
- "I have to finish wrapping
it."
-
- "Nora."
-
- "No no please believe
me, trust me it will be worth the wait."
-
- "HO HO HO HO."
-
- "Hey Santa you ready
for your present?"
-
- "Me ready yes I'm always
ready. Are you ready? Wow are you ever ready. I don't think I
have ever received such an attractively wrapped package before."
-
- "Well if you like the
wrappings I am sure you'll like what's inside."
-
- "May I?"
-
- "Open up...Merry Christmas!"
- *~*
- Nora placed her bottle on
the table in front of her; taking the last bite of pizza before
pulling the blanket off the back of the couch; tucking her legs
underneath her as she continued to stare at the fire. She watched
the flames dance and thought of a very special Christmas; a Christmas
when all things seemed possible, and love was hers for the taking...
-
- "You wait right here
and I'll be right back."
-
- "Where are you going?"
-
- "I am going to do something
that is going to make you remember this holiday forever."
-
- "What are you gonna
do?"
-
- "Sit tight I'll be right
back."
-
- She screams. Bo jumps back,
"What?! Geez I didn't."
-
- "Bo!"
-
- "I didn't know you had
that much lung power there honey, I think I'm deaf."
-
- "Where did you come
up with this harebrained idea?
- You know that I'm in a hypertensive
occupation anyway, meanwhile I get scared out of my wits everytime
you're on duty and now you come along and slash decades off of
my life. Honest to goodness where did you get this suit its two
sizes or ten sizes too big."
-
- "Well it's the last
one they had."
-

- He stood up and walked back
over to the window, the memories he had allowed himself to remember
brought tears to his eyes. He knew now what he's been missing
and he couldn't help but wonder what things could've been like,
what they should've been like. He glanced once over at the phone,
his mind and heart raging a battle within. He walked over to
the desk and was about to pick up the phone when it began to
ring, "Buchanan," silence was all he heard on the other
end of the phone as back on Birch Street she stared at the reciever,
her finger poised to hit the end button, until she heard his
voice, "Nora...is that you?"
-
- She dropped her face in her
hand and brought the reciever back up to her ear, "Yeah,
it's me...um", she wanted to tell him everything, she wanted
to tell him how much she loved him, she shook her head once and
sighed, "I'm sorry to call so late, I just...I wanted to
thank you for coming over tonight to help out with Matthew, it
was...well I appreciate it."
-
- "It was no problem at
all, he's my son, Nora. I want to be there when things like this
come up. I want to be there to share the parenting responsibility
with you. You've done such a wonderful job but I'm here now,
just remember you can call me for anything. I'll always be here
for Matthew....and for you."
-
- She fought back the tears
that were welling up in her eyes, "I know...um well I'll
see you at the office in the morning."
-
- "Right, I'll see you
in the morning. Good night, Nora."
-
- "Good night, Bo."
-
- They both hung up the phone
and turned out the last of the lights before heading to bed....alone.
