On The Eighth Day Of Christmas...

Season For Romance

She smiles at him
He says hello
They stand beneath the mistletoe
Embarrassed by the awkward circumstance
He asks her if she’d like a drink
She says I better not I think
Oh, what the heck, maybe just one glass

Nora smoothed her dress over her hips as she stepped into the doorway of the ballroom at the Llanview Country Club. She scanned the room for Marcie Walsh and released a deep sigh when she didn’t see her. Nora had had no real plans to attend the annual Policemen’s Ball this year despite her being the assistant district attorney, but when Marcie had expressed her desire to go but felt uncomfortable going alone Nora had offered to meet her there.

Bo walked up beside her, looking more dapper than ever in a new Italian cut tuxedo, and smiled. She was obviously not paying attention and never even noticed him next to her. He took a moment to sneak a peek at her, instantly remembering the short black dress she wore. She had worn it once before to a party at the country club just before their wedding. She had taken her breath away that night. He wouldn’t dare admit it had done the same when he walked in tonight.

“Evening Nora,” he said, leaning over her shoulder and speaking quietly into her ear.

Every hair on Nora’s neck and arms stood on end. Her heart began to race at the feel of his breath on her neck, the smell of his cologne surrounding him. She plastered a smile on her face and turned towards him. “Evening to you too, Bo.”

“I didn’t think you were coming tonight.”

Nora shrugged. “I let Marcie talk me into it.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re here.”

“Thank you, I’m glad I’m here too.”

Just then, Antonio and Jessica came dancing past, hesitating as they passed them standing in the doorway.
“Hey you two, you’re falling down on the job.”

“What?” Nora asked, a look of confusion on her face.

Antonio jerked his head upwards. “You guys are breaking tradition.”

Nora and Bo both looked up as Antonio and Jessica danced off, spotting the mistletoe hanging between them in the doorframe. Nora felt the heat rise to her face and quickly stepped out of the doorway. Bo offered her a small smile and stepped out beside her.

“So, uh, you want a drink?”

Nora fidgeted with her purse. “I don’t know Bo. I don’t really drink anymore. Not since Troy…”

“Nora, he’s in Statesville. No one here is going to poison your drink. Certainly not me. Let me get you a glass of champagne.”

Nora scanned the room again for Marcie. “I should really wait for Marcie.”

“We’ll sit at the bar. You can see the door from there. C’mon.”

Nora took a deep breath and then nodded. “All right. Maybe just one glass.”

They talk about oh, this and that
He says I like the way you laugh
And I’m so really glad you’re here
Then, suddenly it’s much too warm
She feels his hand against her arm
The season, love’s the reason for romance
It’ll get you if you give it half a chance

They had been sitting at the bar for half an hour when Marcie walked in. She immediately noticed them sitting there and smiled. They seemed to be having a good time talking so she quietly slipped into the ballroom and walked over to a group of cops she’d become friendly with since working at the police department.

Bo watched her eyes sparkle, as she laughed at one of his stories about his recent weekend alone with Matthew. He knew in his heart of hearts that it was over between he and Gabrielle. A chasm had grown between them too deep to build a bridge over but he had wanted so desperately to not have another failed relationship that he tried to make it work. Sitting here tonight, talking to her suddenly made him realize that he couldn’t continue that. For one thing he didn’t have any feeling for Gabrielle and for another he was starting to have feelings for Nora again. Maybe the feelings had never really left.

“Bo? Are you ok?”

Bo snapped out of his trance at the sound of her voice. He looked down at the bar and then cut his eyes back up at her. “Yeah, I’m fine. I was just thinking how nice it was to hear your laugh. I’ve missed hearing it on a daily basis.”

“Bo…”

“Nora,” he stopped her, placing a hand on her forearm. “Don’t be embarrassed.”

She looked up into his eyes, tears shimmering in her own. “What’s going on here?”

Bo shook his head. “I don’t know but I think I like it.”

She swallowed deeply before speaking, her voice barely above a whisper. “I think I do too.”

The night goes on, the music plays
A moonlight Christmas serenade
A lover’s song, meant for only two
And they don’t even know it yet
But this is one they’ll not forget
The holiday where all their dreams come true

The dinner had been served and now the real dancing had finally begun but still they sat at the bar, empty champagne glasses sitting beside them. Several people had glanced their way but none had dared to interrupt the conversation going on between the two. Somehow, everyone knew something special was happening at the tiny bar. Bo’s hand had not left Nora’s arm and she had not objected to it being there.

They talked about Matt, they talked about Gabrielle and they talked about whether this thing they were doing was real or just foolishness. There was one thing they hadn’t talked about though. “Bo.”

“Yes?”

“What about our past? There is a lot of really bad stuff there.”

Bo began to rub her arm with his fingers. “I know there is and we will talk about it. Not tonight though. The important thing is that we both know that the other one wants to try this thing again. You do, don’t you?”

Nora nodded. “I do, Bo. I think I always have.”

Just then the band began to play “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and Bo began to smile. He stood and offered her his hand. “I think they’re playing our song.”

Nora stood and took his hand, her heart pounding in her chest and followed him out to the dance floor.

Across the floor he spins her ‘round
Oh could it be they’ve finally found
A love worth waiting for
Then in the tender yuletide bliss
They share an unexpected kiss
The season, love’s the reason for romance
It’ll get you if you give it half a chance

They’d been dancing for hours now, not once letting go of each other. There had been fast dances that had dazzled the crowd. There had been slow dances that made the spectators feel like they were watching something that was somehow invading their privacy.
The ball had been over for a while now and everyone had left except them and the cleaning crew but the band played on. The bandleader didn’t mind though. He’d done it many times for this couple in years past. He was just glad to get the chance to do it again.

When the band began to play “My Girl” Bo and Nora pulled apart and looked deeply into each other’s eyes. Bo ran a hand down her face and she tilted her head towards it. Time seemed to stand still as his head lowered towards her. Finally their lips touched. Softly and sweetly, any onlooker would have had to look twice to see the contact but they knew. They knew by the instant electric current that spread through them when they touched.

The kiss deepened and finally when he had no other choice Bo pulled away for air. He rested his forehead against hers. “I love you Nora.”

She ran her hand down his arm. “I love you too.”

He kissed her forehead and then looked into her eyes. “Are you sure? Because I don’t want to pressure you or rush you.”

“Bo?”

“Yes?”

She took his hand in her own. “Take me home.”

Then suddenly the night is gone
It’s late into an early morn
The season, love’s the reason for romance
It’ll get you if you give it half a chance

Bo pushed Matthew’s hair from his forehead and kissed him lightly. It was just after 2 am when they got back to Nora’s house to relieve Mary Ann. He had gone in to check on Matthew and Nora had disappeared into her room. He smiled when he felt her arms slip around him. He turned in her arms and whistled quietly.

“Wow. You look great,” Bo said, giving her that look that made her feel like a million bucks.

Nora had changed into the nightgown he had given her for their first Christmas as old, boring married folks. “Well, I know how much you love me in this gown.”

Bo pulled her hand to his lips and kissed it lightly. “You know Nora, we don’t have to do this. We have a lifetime ahead of us.”

“I know I don’t have to but I want to. I believe in you Bo and I believe in us. It might not be easy but I know in my heart that we are going to be a family. I want that to start now. I want to be with you.”

Bo leaned in and kissed her before taking her hand and leading her across the hall. As the door to Nora’s bedroom closed Matthew rolled over and smiled. It wasn’t even Christmas Day yet and Santa had already granted his wish. They were going to be a family. It didn’t get much better than that.
