The Ninth Day of Christmas

It Must Have Been The Mistletoe

It must have been the mistletoe
The lazy fire, the fallen snow
The magic in the frosty air
That feeling everywhere

“Matthew Hannan Buchanan!! You have exactly five minutes to get dressed and get down these stairs!!” Nora shouted as she headed towards the front door to open it.

Bo shook the snow out of his hair and stepped inside. “Hi Red. Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas to you too, Bo.” Nora replied as she leaned in to kiss his cheek lightly.

It had been nearly ten months since the Music Box Killer, who had turned out to be Daniel Coulson, had killed Gabrielle. Bo had grieved for her but with Nora’s help and support he had come out the other side. They were closer than ever but still they were only friends.
They both looked up when they heard Matthew’s footsteps pounding down the stairs. “Dad! You’re finally here!”

Bo smiled at his son. “I’m only five minutes late son.”

“Besides, you weren’t even ready yet,” Nora stated.

“Whatever. Let’s get going.”

Bo and Nora laughed as he grabbed his jacket and ran for the door. They followed him, Bo helping Nora on with her coat. Matt turned around and smiled at his parents.

“Look you two, you’re under the mistletoe.”

Bo and Nora both looked over their heads at the mistletoe hanging between them, the heat rising up both their necks.

Bo cleared his throat. “What do you know?”

“C’mon you guys, you’ve got to kiss.”

Bo and Nora looked at each other, not sure quite what to do until finally Bo leaned in and kissed her lightly on her lips. Matthew smiled and ran out the door to Bo’s jeep to wait on them. They stood inside mesmerized by the spark that one little kiss could produce after all those years until finally Bo took her hand and led her outside.

“We better get going. Our son is waiting.”

It must have been the pretty lights
That glistened in the silent night
And maybe just the stars so bright
That shined above you

Bo and Nora stepped out of his jeep in front of Asa’s house. Bo opened the back door of the Jeep and Matthew streaked past him and up to the front door. Bo walked around the front of the car and stood next to Nora.

“He sure is anxious.”

Nora laughed. “Can you blame him? After all that loot that Asa gave him last Christmas Eve he’s been counting the days down since March. Thanks for taking us on a tour of the lights around here. It was beautiful.”

Bo looked at her profile. “You’re beautiful.”

“What?”

“You’re beautiful. The cold air adding a shade of pink to your cheeks, your breath turning to fog in the air, the stars behind you. It’s a stunning picture.”

Just then the front door opened and Matthew ran past Nigel into the house. Nora looked away from Bo and headed to the door. Bo sighed and followed them inside.

Our first Christmas
More than we’d been dreaming of
Old Saint Nicholas
Had his fingers crossed
That we would fall in love

Bo sat on the edge of the back of the couch watching Matthew playing with all his new toys and drinking spiced cider. Nora and Renee had gone off somewhere to do something. Asa walked up behind his son and watched Matthew for a moment.

“He’s grown so much since last year.”

Bo smiled sadly. “Like a weed. And despite having total access to him I still miss a lot.”

“You know son, there is one way to fix that.”

“I know Pa. I’ve been thinking about it all the time lately. I’ve even thrown out some feelers tonight but Nora doesn’t seem to be interested.”

Asa patted his son’s shoulder. “She’s interested son. Just give her some time.”

Renee sat a cup of steaming hot coffee on the table in front of Nora. Nora picked it up and took a sip. “So, how is married life?”

Renee smiled. “Fabulous. I’m beginning to think the third time is a charm.”

Nora laughed. “You’re good for Asa. Maybe he’s finally realized that.”

“And what about you and Bo?”

Nora sat her coffee cup down on the table. “What about me and Bo? We have a son, we work together, and that about covers it.”

“I don’t think so honey.”

“What do you mean?”

Renee placed her hand over Nora’s on the table. “Take some advise from someone who’s been there a time or two. Don’t turn your back on love just because it didn’t work out the first time. It can be even better the second time around.”

It could have been the holiday
The midnights ride upon the sleigh
The countryside all dressed in white
That crazy snowball fight

Nora pulled the blanket up higher over her legs as she stared up to the starry sky. After they had finished up with presents Bo had surprised her and Matthew with a sleigh ride on Asa’s property. They’d gone to get Matthew ready only to find him asleep and Bo had convinced her to go with him anyway.

Not much had been said but the scenery was breath taking. The quiet gave her time to think about what Renee had said to her earlier. Meanwhile, Bo was thinking his own thoughts about what his father had told him. He wanted to explore things with Nora but Asa suggested he give her time. He just didn’t know how long he could wait before he just took her in his arms and kissed her.

“Nora…

“Bo…”

Bo smiled at her. “You were going to say something?”

Suddenly Nora felt self-conscious. “Uh, we um, stopped.”

“Oh yeah! I wanted to show you something. Are you up for a short walk?”

Nora shrugged. “Sure. Why not?”

Bo took her hand and helped her out of the sleigh, not letting go when she was safely on the ground. They took a small walk and came to a beautiful frozen pond surrounded by trees and snow. Nora gasped in wonderment.

“It’s beautiful Bo.”

“Isn’t it?”

She nodded. “How come I’ve never been here before?”
Bo shrugged. “It was kind of my secret place. I just felt like this was the year to share it with someone. With you.”

“I’m flattered.”

Bo watched her stare out at the frozen pond, mesmerized in her own thoughts. An evil smile formed across his lips as he stooped to gather a handful of snow. Then, he pelted it at an unsuspecting Nora hitting her square on the neck. She sputtered for a moment and then turned to face him.

“Oh, you’re asking for it now mister.”

Nora stooped down and grabbed a handful of snow and threw it at him, hitting him in the shoulder. Bo laughed and grabbed more snow and before you knew it they were in the middle of a huge snowball fight. After about five minutes Bo was bent over gathering snow when Nora grabbed his sweater and dumped snow down the back. Bo grabbed her arm and pulled her towards him causing them to both loose their balance.

An instant later he was lying in the snow with her on top of them, their faces just inches apart. Bo couldn’t stand it any longer. He pulled her towards him and kissed her hungrily. After a moment she pulled away.

“Nora.”

“We’ve got to go Bo. We have someplace to be.”

It could have been the steeple bells
That wrapped us up within its spell
It only took one kiss to know
It must have been the mistletoe

Bo fidgeted as he stood outside watching the children’s nativity at St. James. Matthew and Starr were both in the play but he just couldn’t concentrate. He needed to talk to Nora. He needed to know why she had pulled away from him.

The sound of clapping pulled him out of his trance. He began clapping with the rest of the parents and then scooped Matt up in his arms when he came running to him. “Hey Dad! How was I as Joseph?”

“You were the greatest Joseph ever. Have you seen your mother?”

“She’s over by Aunt Viki.”

Bo spotted Nora across the church yard and headed towards her. “Hi Viki. Nora, I think we need…”

“To get this one home and to bed. Viki, I’ll call you in the next day or two.” Nora took Matthew from Bo and headed towards the car.

“All right Nora. You guys have a good Christmas.”

“We will Viki,” Bo replied as he watched Matt and Nora climb into his car.

Our first Christmas
More than we’d been dreaming of
Old Saint Nicholas
Had his fingers crossed
That we would fall in love

Bo carried a sleeping Matthew into Nora’s house and up the stairs. They took a minute to slip him out of his clothes and into his pajamas before they headed out of the room. They were just at the door to his room when he called out to Bo.

“Dad?”

Bo stepped back into the room and sat on the edge of Matt’s bed. “Yeah buddy?”

“You going to be here tomorrow?”

Bo smiled down at his son. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Matthew nodded and then drifted back to sleep. Bo turned and saw that Nora was gone. He headed downstairs and found her staring into the fire she’d just started. He walked up beside her.

“Thank you Bo. For tonight. Matthew had a wonderful time.”

“What about Matthew’s mother?”

Nora smiled. “She had a good time.”

“Good, I’m glad.”

Nora stepped away from him. “Well, I guess I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Nora.”

“Yes Bo?” She turned back to face him.

“Nora, I love you.”

It must have been the mistletoe
The lazy fire, the fallen snow
The magic in the frosty air
That made me love you
On Christmas Eve our wish came true
That night I fell in love with you
It only took one kiss to know
It must have been the mistletoe

“Bo, don’t be silly.”

Bo walked over to her and placed a hand on her face. “I mean it Nora. I love you. I’ve known it for a long time, I just couldn’t admit until tonight.”

Tears glistened in her eyes. “Are you sure?”

“Absolutely positive. I love you. Always have, always will.”

She placed her hand over his on her face. “I love you too Bo. I never stopped.”

Bo gave her one of his famous looks as he leaned in and kissed her lightly. After a few minutes Nora pulled away. She looked deeply into his eyes.

“What was it Bo?”

“What was what?”

“What made you be able to admit it tonight?”

Bo smiled and then looked over their heads. “It must have been the mistletoe.”

It must have been the mistletoe
One kiss to know
I love you so
