Deep in the Heart of Texas - The Sequel - Part 3
They didn't get much sleep. At around 7:00 a.m. Nora heard tapping on their door.
M: Mommy?
Nora searched under the sheets to find her nightgown.
N (Whispering): Just a minute, sweetie. I'll be right out.
By this time Bo was twisting and turning, he reached for Nora, who was out of bed already. She remembered he had thrown her gown across the room.
N (Mumbling): Maybe he'd like it if I threw his shorts out the window! Ha! He probably would. Give him an excuse to stay in bed.
B (Groggy): What?
N: Nothing....nothing, go back to sleep. I'll be downstairs.
She opens the door to find Matthew patiently waiting for her.
N: Morning, honey. (She kisses him)
M: Hi mommy. Rebecca's awake. Is daddy getting up?
N: No, I'm going to let him sleep for awhile.
Nora goes to Rebecca's room, Matthew in tow, ready to help.
Her daughter always had a bright smile and giggle for her in the mornings. 'How can someone be so happy in the morning', Nora laughed to herself. She changed her and the three of them headed downstairs to start the day.
Matthew plopped down on the couch in front of the TV to watch cartoons. Nora carried Rebecca and carefully balanced her on one hip as she made her way around the kitchen to start breakfast. She started the coffee and made Matthew some cereal. She called to him when it was ready.
M: But, mom Bugs is going to bop Daffy!!
N: No eating in front of the TV, Matthew.
Matthew knew his mother's word was final and trudged into the kitchen to sit at the table with them.
M: But you and daddy do it all the time. It's not fair!
Nora realized her son was right, but she simply gave him the 'We're the grown-ups reason, that's why' answer.
Nora fed Rebecca her fruit and cereal while she waited for the coffee to finish. They talked about what they would do that day and pretty soon Bo bounded into the kitchen.
B: And how is my favorite family this morning??
He kissed all three of them as he made he was to the coffeepot.
M: Do you have more than one family, daddy?
Bo laughed.
B: No, I do not. You three right here are my family and you guys are my favorite. How's that?
M: Okay!
Nora looked at Bo lovingly. They had been through so much and here they sat - a family having breakfast together on a Saturday morning.
B: I was thinking we could go to the aquarium today. What do you say?
M: Yea!!! I want to see the sharks!
N: That sounds like a great idea. But, Bo I do want to discuss what we talked about last night.
B: Sure, honey.
Bo quickly changed the subject back to the aquarium.
B: You know, Matt, Uncle Hank told me they have an octopus now. How cool is that?
M: Way cool! We learned about them in school.
Nora drank her coffee and ate breakfast while they talked about how they would spend their day. Bo cleaned up the kitchen while Nora and the kids headed upstairs for showers and to get ready.
Nora dressed Rebecca and was straightening Matt's room and gathering their things for the day while Bo showered and dressed. She entered their bedroom while Bo was running a towel over his head and rummaging through his closet.
N: Are you ready to talk?
B: About?
N: How could you forget?!? Moving to Texas - back to the ranch.
B: Oh. Right. Well, to be honest honey, I haven't thought about it yet. We didn't exactly do much talking or thinking last night. And we're heading out for the day, so...... Besides, it's not like we have to decide this minute.
He kissed her as she sat down on their bed with the baby and some toys.
N: I'm serious about this, Bo.
B: I don't know, Red. It sounds like a bad TV movie on the Lifetime channel. You know, gorgeous attorney leaves the big city to find a better life.
N: Don't make fun of me! I'm not leaving anything or anyone behind. You left that part out .Gorgeous husband and kids come with her too!
B: I'm sorry. I'm not making fun of you. This is all just so.....weird.
N: If I remember correctly, you didn't want to leave Texas. So why don't you want to go back?
B: Nora, I left because of you. I would follow you to Mars if you asked me to. I just don't think you know what you'd be getting into.
N: So now you are questioning my ability to function as a human being, is that it?
B: Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! Is that what I said?
N: Isn't it?
B: No that's not what I meant. Where's this hostility coming from, Nora?
He sits down with them on the bed and hands Rebecca a stuffed animal.
N: I'm not being hostile. I want to discuss this with you like an adult and I can tell you are avoiding the subject. (Her voice was starting to rise)
Matthew appeared in the doorway.
M: Why are you guys fighting?
He wasn't used to his parents fighting. Most of the time they were kissing. He didn't like that any better.
N: We're not fighting, honey. Are you ready to go?
M: Yes.
N: All right, wait for us downstairs, will you?
M: Okay.
B: For your information, I'm not avoiding the subject. Jeez, Red, there's a ton of stuff we have to discuss and it's certainly not going to be settled in a day!
N: I just don't understand why it's so difficult to make a decision. You either want to move or you don't.
B: Okay and if I don't that's not the right answer, right?
N: I want you to communicate with me. Don't shut me out about how you are feeling.
B: I'm not.
N: But, I can tell there is something you're not telling me!
B: Look who's talking! You spring on me that you haven't been happy for some time! What do you call that?
N: We're obviously not communicating as well as we should be.
B: Obviously!
Nora started to pack up Rebecca's things.
N: Let's go. Matthew's waiting.
B (sarcastic): This ought to be fun.
