At Last – Part 13

Last Time:

Bo and Nora spend the evening talking, eating, laughing, drinking. It was a wonderful “first” date. At the end of a fantastic dinner, Bo walks Nora to her front door.

BO: I had a wonderful evening.

NORA (smiling): Me too. I hope we can do this again soon.

BO: You can count on it.

Bo leans in for a kiss but Nora puts her hands on his chest and holds him off.

NORA: Bo Buchanan you should be ashamed of your self.

BO: Me?

NORA: Just what kind of girl do you think I am?

BO (smiling): You’re beautiful and funny and brilliant.

He leans in for another try at a kiss. Nora holds him off again.

NORA (smiling): No kisses on the first date….goodnight Bo.

BO (smiling): Good night Red.

************
A couple of days later Nora walks into the police station. She chats with Tim and Janis and then makes her way to Bo’s office. She knocks quietly.

BO: Come on in.

Nora walks in and Bo gets a huge smile on his face. He walks around to the front of his desk and gives her a huge hug.

NORA: Hi.

BO: Hi. It’s good to see you. What brings you down?

NORA: I need to get some files for some new client’s that I’m taking on.

BO: Are you sure that you’re ready to go back to work full-time.

NORA (getting a little testy): Yes I’m ready. Don’t you think I am?

BO: It’s just that you look tired. Have you been sleeping at all?

NORA (getting more angry): I’ve been sleeping just fine.

BO: That’s not what Matt tells me. He says that you’re awake a lot.

NORA: So now my son’s snitching on me. Just great.

BO: He’s not snitching. Is this about Sam?

NORA (even more angry): No…this is NOT about Sam. I don’t even think about Sam any more.

BO: Red…I think that maybe you should talk to somebody about this. Maybe Rae?

NORA (really angry): There is NOTHING to talk about. Sam is no longer in my life. I don’t need to worry about him.

BO: Then why aren’t you sleeping at night?

NORA (standing up and heading for the door): That’s it. I don’t want to talk about this any more. Matt and I are going away for the weekend.

BO: What? When did you decide this?

NORA: I just made up my mind right now. Momma has been begging us to come to Chicago so we’ll catch a plane this afternoon.

BO: I don’t mean to run you off. I’m just worried about you. I love you Red.

NORA (quietly as she walks out the door): I know.

The next morning in Chicago. Selma is in the kitchen reading the paper when Nora walks in. Nora gets a cup of coffee and sits down at the table with her mom.

NORA: Where’s Matt?

SELMA: He and your father went to the park. Then they were going to get some breakfast. I’m sure a trip to the toy store will be involved in their day too.

NORA: I wish daddy wouldn’t spoil him so much.

SELMA: We’re not spoiling him. Okay…maybe a little. But Matthew just lost his father. I think he deserves to be spoiled a little right now.

NORA: You sound like Bo.

SELMA (smiling): How is Bo?

NORA (a little angry): How am I supposed to know? I’m not his keeper.

SELMA: Honey…come on. Tell me what’s going on here? I could tell something was wrong yesterday when you came. But I didn’t bring it up. I just wanted to enjoy having you and Matthew you here. But I can tell that you aren’t sleeping. What’s wrong?

NORA (smiling softly): Now you really sound like Bo. Momma…I really don’t know what’s wrong. Bo has been so wonderful to me and to Matt the past couple of months. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’m head over heels, stars in my eyes, crazy in love with Bo Buchanan [can you name the scene where that line came from???]

SELMA: Well I’m glad that you finally figured that one out.

NORA: But I keep having these nightmares about Sam. About him hitting me and holding me prisoner. And then the fire. I just keep reliving that over and over.

SELMA: You need to let it go.

NORA: I know….but I can’t.

SELMA: Maybe you need to talk to somebody. A professional.

NORA (smiling): That’s exactly what Bo said.

SELMA (smiling): I knew I loved that boy for a reason.

NORA: We had an argument about it just before I came here. But I realize that you’re both right. If I want to move on with my life I need to get over the past.

SELMA: Maybe you should cut Bo a little slack and give him a call.

NORA (hugging her mom): Thanks for putting up with me.

SELMA: You’re my baby. Of course I’ll put up with you.

Nora goes up to her bedroom and sits down on the bed. She stares at the phone for a minute and then picks it up and dials.

JANIS (answering Bo’s phone): Commissioner Buchanan’s office.

NORA: Janis…it’s Nora. How are you?

JANIS: I’m fine Ms. Buchanan. What can I do for you?

NORA: I’m looking for Bo. Is he there?

JANIS: Uhhhmmmm

NORA (panicking): What? What is it? What’s wrong with Bo?

JANIS: I don’t know how to tell you this…

NORA: Just tell me already.

JANIS: There was a bank robbery this morning and hostages were taken.

NORA: Is Bo okay? Was he shot?

JANIS: No…no… but he traded himself for the rest of the hostages. He’s been in there for a couple of hours and we haven’t heard a thing from him or from the robbers.

NORA: But you’re sure he’s okay?

JANIS: I wish I could tell you that but we really don’t know.

NORA: Oh god. I’ll be there as soon as I can.

Selma agrees to keep Matt in Chicago so that Nora can get back to Llanview. The whole time Nora is on the plane, all she can think about is the possibility that she would lose Bo all over again. She was determined not to let that happen. She arrives at the bank but she doesn’t see any one that she knows that will give her any information about Bo. Finally she sees Officer Tim.

NORA: How is he? Is he still in there?

TIM: Nora…we really don’t know.

NORA: Don’t hide anything from me.

TIM: I’m not. We haven’t had any contact with anyone inside for the past hour and a half.

Inside the bank, Bo is sitting on the floor, his arms tied behind him with his back resting on the teller cage. He knows that these are just two small time hoods that got in over their heads. But sometimes those can be the most dangerous.

BO: Hey guys…why don’t you just give yourself up? Just let me walk out the door and then you can walk out right behind me. Maybe we can work something out.

ROB1: How stupid do you think we are? We’re robbing a bank and holding the police commissioner hostage. I am sooo sure that you’re just going to let us walk away with a slap on the wrist.

ROB2: And besides…we’re running this show. Not you.

BO: Fine….don’t listen to me. I’m more than willing to sit here until the SWAT team comes in. I know they won’t hurt me. I can’t say the same thing about you two.

ROB1: Will you just shut up? I don’t want to hear you yammerin’ any more.

ROB2 (to ROB1): What the heck is he talking about? A SWAT team? You never said nuthin’ about no SWAT team.

ROB1: You knew that getting caught was a risk.

ROB2: Getting caught…sure. But gettin’ dead? No money is worth getting killed over.

ROB1: We ain’t going to get killed. Them cops won’t do nothin’ with their boss in here.

ROB2: I’m not so sure. He looks awful confident over there.

ROB1: It’s just an act. Trust me.

Bo smiles because he knows that they are arguing between themselves. That’s exactly what he wanted to happen. He glanced at his watch. Only a couple more minutes to wait. After a couple minutes, the windows are smashed in and the door is broken open with a battering ram. The SWAT team surrounds the robbers as another officer cuts Bo free. The SWAT team escorts the bad guys out and Bo follows them. He looks around at the crowd and he thinks he sees Nora. Before he has a chance to react to seeing her, the press surrounds him.

After talking to the press for an hour, he looks to see if he can find Nora again. She’s nowhere to be found. He finds Tim.

BO: Tim…did you see Nora here?

TIM: Yes sir. She was standing right over there (pointing). She was plenty worried about you.

BO (smiling): She was? I wonder where she went.

Bo heads to the office to start the paperwork to make sure these guys stay in jail for a nice long time. At about 8:00 he’s ready to call it a day so he heads home. As he’s digging out the keys from his pocket he senses someone else in the hallway. He turns around.

NORA: Bo.

BO: Nora?

She runs into his arms and he holds her tight.
