At Last - Part 6

Last Time:

He puts the note in his pocket and heads over to her house. He's glad to see the lights on at her place. He knocks on the door.

BO (to himself): At least she isn't staying at Sam's.

Nora looks through the window and slowly opens the door.

NORA: Let me explain Bo….

BO: No need to explain Red. I understand. The conversation got to be a little too much. I'm sorry. It won't happen again.

NORA: It won't?

BO: No. I realize that you want to make a life with Sam and I am nothing more than a friend. I get that now.

Bo walks out the door and he closes it behind him. Nora follows a few seconds behind him. She slowly opens the door and whispers his name. "Bo."

***********************************
A couple of days later Nora stops by the garret to see Bo.

NORA: Can we talk?

BO: Sure.

Bo leads her to the couch where they sit down next to each other.

BO: Is Matt back from Chicago?

NORA: Yea. I went to get him yesterday. It's great to have him home. I've missed him.

BO: I bet. What'd you want to see me about?

NORA (quietly): Sam wants to set a wedding date.

BO: Wow. I guess if you're going to do it you may as well just do it.

NORA (looking at him with tears in her eyes): Do you really feel that way?

BO: Nora….if it's what you want, it's what I want. I only want you to be happy.

NORA: I need your help. I need your friendship. I can't lose that.

Bo puts his arm around her and she rests her head on his shoulder.

BO: I will always be your friend. You will never lose me. I will always be there for you and Matt. Never doubt that.

NORA: Thank you. Have you found out anything more about who is trying to kill me?

BO: Not yet. But for now I think you'll be safe. You're back in the spotlight. This kook will be laying low. Maybe it'll give me enough to catch this guy.

NORA: I hope so. I need my life back. Did you hear that Sam is throwing me a "welcome home from the dead" party?

BO (smiling): He's not really calling it that is he?

NORA (smiling back): He thinks he's being clever.

BO: Oh…clever huh? I heard about it from Hank.

NORA: Are you coming?

BO: Well I haven't been officially invited by the host. I just can't crash now can I?

NORA: Sure you can. The guest of honor would like your presence there. And so would Matt. He misses you.

BO: Then I'll be there.

NORA: Thank you. Both for coming to the party and for putting up with me. I don't deserve it.

BO: Sure you do. You deserve only the best.

Two days later at the party. Nora is watching Bo while she's chatting with Hank.

NORA: Bo doesn't look like he's having too much fun.

HANK: Sure is he. He thrives on this stuff. I can just see his pondering all of the possibilities. Checking out all of the suspects.

NORA: You think he's looking for suspects?

HANK: Of course. He's not convinced that it isn't somebody that you know.

NORA: He didn't tell me that.

HANK: He doesn't tell you everything he's thinking.

NORA: What does that mean?

HANK (smiling): Nothing.

NORA (smiling): What secrets are you keeping from me Gannon?

HANK: For me to know and you to find out.

Bo wanders over to where Hank and Nora are chatting.

HANK: You having a good time?

BO: Me….I thrive on this stuff. All these suspects all in one room.

HANK (smiling at Nora): See…I told you so.

NORA: You really think that someone in this room could be the person after me?

BO: I'm not ruling anybody out. Except maybe Matt and Hank.

HANK: Thanks buddy. On that note I'm going to go drink some more of Rappaport's champagne and eat some more of his food.

Hank leaves Bo and Nora alone.

NORA: Thanks for coming.

BO: I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I'm really glad that you're alive.

NORA (laughing and touching his arm): You know what? I'm glad that I'm alive too.

BO: Where's Matt? I have that birthday present that I never got to give him.

NORA: He's going to be sorry that he missed that. Stevie Taylor was having a sleepover tonight and for some strange reason he thought a campout with a bunch of five year old boys would be more fun than this old stuffy party.

BO (laughing): Go figure. I'll have to come over and see him another time then.

NORA: He'd love that. He can't wait to see you again. All he talks about is going fishing with you.

BO: A boy after my own heart. I'll call him in a couple of days and set something up with him.

Sam sees them chatting and gets jealous. He grabs a glass of champagne and walks over to where Bo and Nora are talking and laughing. He puts his arm around Nora's waist and she jumps in surprise.

NORA: Oh Sam. I didn't see you.

SAM: I brought you over some champagne stinger.

NORA: None for me. I'm sticking with the club soda tonight.

SAM: Come on….just a little champagne. You deserve to celebrate.

NORA: I am celebrating. I'm surrounded by people that I love (glancing at Bo) and that love me. I don't need alcohol to make me feel any happier.

BO: You do look happy. I will say that.

SAM (kissing Nora on the cheek): And so beautiful too.

BO: I'm going to leave you two alone. I see Vicki and I want to talk to her quick.

SAM: See you later Bo.

Nora watches Bo walk away with sad eyes.

SAM: I thought he'd never leave. I wanted you all to myself for a while.

NORA: That's so sweet. But I really need to mingle. There is a bunch of people that I haven't talked to yet tonight. You understand don't you?

SAM (disappointed): Of course stinger. Mingle, nosh, have fun.

NORA: Thank you. I will.

A couple hours later Bo and Nora run into each other again.

BO: You having a good time?

NORA (smiling): I'm having a great time.

BO: Good. I love seeing that smile on your face. I was thinking….

NORA: What?

BO: Maybe after all of your guests leave we could take a walk? Talk a little?

NORA (still smiling): I think I'd like that.

BO: Really…?

Bo cell phone rings and they need him down at the station.

BO: This shouldn't take long. How about we meet at the park entrance in an hour?

NORA: Okay.

An hour later Nora is primping in front of the mirror fixing her hair and her makeup. She smiles in anticipation of meeting Bo. As she gets to the door, Sam comes up behind her and slams the door shut.

SAM: Just where do you think you're going?

NORA: I was just going out for a walk. I'm too wired to sleep and I thought a walk would relax me.

SAM: At midnight? Come on Nora. You were going to meet Bo.

NORA: Sam….

SAM: What about Matthew? Doesn't he deserve parents that love him? Don't you think we need to make a life together for his sake?

Bo is pacing around the park entrance waiting for Nora when his phone rings.

BO: Buchanan.

NORA: Bo…it's me. I can't make it tonight.

BO (sad): Mind if I ask why?

NORA (tears forming in her eyes): My family needs me. I have to think about what is best for Matthew. Goodnight Bo.

BO: Goodnight Red.
