Body and Soul- Part IV

Buchanan Cabin: Bo and Matthew are packing up to head back to Llanview and Bo is getting antsy because he wants to get back before Nora.

“Matthew! Let’s get movin’ we need to get back home before dark. Your mom should be landing soon, don’t you want to see her?” Bo shouted up the large oak staircase.

“Dad, I’m comin’ I was just getting the rest of my gear, you’re always the one who tells me to clean up after myself wherever I go.”

Bo couldn’t believe that Matthew waited until this time of all times to remind him of camping rules he had taught him long ago. As inpatient as he was, Bo still thought it was amusing and laughed at his son’s need to please.

“OK, Now are you ready son? You know we can still grab some dinner before we see mom. Does that sound good or what?”

“Yeah, as long as we get food from the diner because I know mom would love that after she’s been in Chicago for so long. She probably hasn’t eaten any flan for weeks!” Matthew said in an astonished tone that made Bo laugh out loud.

They were off to Llanview, in fact they were getting pretty close when they noticed debris on the sides of the road. “Matt buddy, can you eject that CD for me? I want to listen to the radio to figure out what’s going on up there.”

“Dad! You said that I could listen to this CD, I just bought it and you know how I HATE commercials” Matthew said exasperated.

“Matt, as soon as we figure out… oh my gosh, Matt sit tight I’m gonna pull off here and talk to those policemen.” Bo was now very nervous; he could see ahead that there was much larger debris and some strange looking clouds in the sky. Bo jumped from his truck and ran over to the cops leaving Matthew inside wondering what was going on.

“Hey officer, I’m the commishioner in Llantano county and I was wondering where did all of this debris come from?”

“Are you commishioner Buchanan?”

“Yes, how did you know?” Bo answered wondering how this guy knew him and what it meant.

“We’ve been looking for you, haven’t you heard, there were two tornados that passed through Llantano county earlier today. There has been major damage to town and some fatalities I’m afraid to say.”

Bo felt every muscle in his body tense up. “What about the airport? Has anything happened over there?”

The officer thought this an odd question but answered, “Um I am not quite sure about the airport but I can radio over there if you want. There has been damage everywhere.” The officer said immedietly calling into his radio. “Hey, this is Officer James here, how much damage at the airport in Llantano county? Are there any fatalities?”

The words went through Bo, he couldn’t bare to think that Nora had just recovered from being in the coma for so long and they were finally working on things between them, for this to happen now…

“Commishioner? Hey… did you hear that?” the officer said obviously puzzled.

“What? I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you, what did they say about Nora?” The words escaped his mouth before he even thought, this guy had no idea who he was talking about. “I mean, Nora is a friend of mine and she was flying in this afternoon from Chicago. That’s why I’m so concerned about the airport.” Bo said trying to explain himself and not understanding why.

“Sir, the airports just have minimal damage, nothing to worry about but you are needed in Llanview by your family for some reason.”

“Oh, well can I pass through here all the way through or is there a detour?” Bo asked.

“Just as long as you’re careful, and that is your truck right?”

“Yes it is but I have my young son, are you sure?”

“Yeah, as long as you have four wheel drive you’ll be OK, but I want to warn you, they say it’s really bad there so you might want to stash your son somewhere while you check it out. The storms are over but the heartache will just be starting.”

“Unfortunatly officer, Matthew has been through so much I think he’s the strongest kid ever and I feel he’ll be safest with me.” Bo thanked the officer and headed back to his truck where Matthew was waiting full of questions. He had heard a little on the radio but couldn’t comprehend something this big happening all while they were away at the cabin. He sat still while his father frantically dialed Nora’s number. “Damnit Nora, answer the phone!” Bo slammed his fist on the dash in anger.

“Dad? Is mom OK? You seem pretty upset but the radio says that we got two tornados in Llanview. Aren’t you supposed to be there to help protect people?” Matthew asked innocently.

“Yeah son you’re right. Do me a favor call you mom for me over and over until you get through to her.” Bo said franticaly as he manuvered his truck out on to the road.
He looked over at Matthew who was dialing Nora, even though he knew Matt would not reach his mother right now it was a distraction and he increasingly wished he had one too. Oh how he hoped everyone was OK. He knew he would find out one way or the other very soon, too soon he thought. He just knew he had to find his family and Nora was definatly a part of his family always was and always would be. Thinking this Bo stepped on the gas!
