Bo's Journey Home - Chapter 3

Monday, June 23rd, 2003 dusk, the Llanview Police Station

Nora arrived at the police station and found Antonio there, sitting at his desk. Behind him, Bo’s office was dark. “Antonio, where’s Bo?” she demanded.

Antonio looked at her, a bit confused. “Bo? He went home hours ago.”

Nora was confused as well. “No, I was just at his house. Gabrielle said he called her; he was working late.”

Antonio’s confusion matched hers. “He told me he was going home, I could reach him there.” Antonio stood quickly, as Nora paled. “What’s wrong, Nora?”

Nora felt her chest constricting, barely able to say the words out loud. “I can’t find my son Matthew.”

Antonio went cold but he spoke, trying to stay calm for her. “What do you mean?” he asked. “You can’t find him?”

Nora continued, pacing slightly from side to side, almost rambling. ”…I got home from work, he wasn’t there, I called Maryann, she said he never got there from day camp, I went by Bo’s house, thinking he might have picked him up, but they weren’t there….”

Antonio reached out to grab her, to steady her. “Nora, slow down. Breathe.” He pushed her gently into the chair by his desk. “Sit. Now start at the beginning and tell me everything again.”

Nora sat fidgeting in the chair, trying to steady her breathing. “I got home…”

Antonio sat at his desk, writing notes.”…what time?”

Nora ran her hand through her hair, the lump in her throat swelling, making it hard to breath, let alone talk. ” …I don’t know,” she gasped out. Nora stood, turning from him, throwing her hands into the air, slapping them down onto her legs and then turning back to him. “Antonio, I don’t have time for this, I need to find my son.”

Antonio stood up with her, raising his voice just enough to get her attention. “Nora! Stop!” Antonio calmed his voice again, speaking softly. “I am going to help you but I need you to stay calm.”

Nora was almost hysterical. “Stay calm! I can’t find my son, I can’t find Bo and you want me to stay calm?”

Antonio gently pushed her back into the chair by his desk. “Please. Just sit down and let me try and find Bo, okay?”

Nora nodded, holding back the tears threatening to explode, and swallowing the lump rising higher in her throat. “Okay,” she nodded, “Okay, okay,” she said again quickly, her breaths coming in quick succession.
Antonio picked up his phone, keeping his eye on Nora, afraid she was going to hyperventilate. He dialed Bo’s home number and got a busy signal. He pushed down on the receiver and dialed Bo’s cell but got his voice mail. He pushed down on the receiver a third time and dialed police dispatch. Antonio spoke into his phone. “This is Detective Vega. I need an officer to go by Commissioner Buchanan’s house right a way and if he’s there,” he said, looking over at Nora who was shaking her head no, “to tell him to call me here at the station.” Antonio paused, listening. “I did try calling him myself; his phone seems to be out of order.” Antonio hesitated again, looking at Nora. “Tell him it’s urgent he calls me right away.” Antonio hung up the phone and looked at Nora again. He pulled his chair in front of her, resting his hands on her knees. She was staring out over his shoulder, but her breathing was a bit more regular. Antonio’s voice was gentle. “Nora,” he said softly, shaking her knees. Nora looked back at him. “We’ll find Matthew, Nora.”

Nora nodded her head, looking to the floor and back up at Antonio. “I want to believe you. I need to believe you.”

Antonio sat, taking his notepad again. “Okay. Tell me what he was wearing; I can start an Amber alert.”

Nora cringed at those words, grabbing the back of her neck, a new set of fears starting to overwhelm her.
“Antonio, you don’t think someone might have…”

Antonio cut her off. “Just tell me what he was wearing.”

Monday, June 23rd, 2003 dusk, the Garrett

Bo and Gabrielle emerged from their shower. Bo still felt tense. He grabbed the back of his neck again, the tension settling there. Something didn’t feel right to him. He pulled on a pair of LPD sweatpants and a tee shirt and joined Gabrielle in the living room, where she had placed the small, intimate table with candles. She was just starting to get the appetizers from the kitchen when there was a knock at the door. Bo headed to the door, calling out. “Who is it?”

The officer sent by dispatch called back through the door. “Commissioner Buchanan, its Officer Garner.”

Bo opened the door with a confused look on his face. “What is it, Garner?”

Garner stood in the hall, speaking to Bo. “Dispatch instructed me to come by your house and have you call Detective Vega down at the police station.”

Bo repeated him, looking confused. “Dispatch? Come by my house? Why didn’t Vega just call me here?”

Garner shrugged slightly. “Says he tried sir. Your phone might be out of order.”

Bo looked back into the room and looked at the phone. It appeared to be off the hook. He looked back at the officer. “Okay, thanks Garner.”

Garner started to leave and turned back to Bo. “Oh, and Commissioner, the detective said it was urgent you call him right away.”

Bo again repeated the officer. “Urgent?” He looked back at his officer. “Thanks Garner,” Bo repeated. He closed the door and went to the phone. It was off the hook. For one second he looked at Gabrielle and then he pushed the receiver to get a dial tone and called Antonio. Bo was still trying to massage the throb in his neck when he heard Antonio’s voice come through the line. “Detective Vega.”

“Antonio, its Bo, what’s going on?”

Antonio looked at Nora as he cut Bo off.
“Commissioner, you need to get down here.”

Bo let his hand slide from his neck, alarmed at the formal sound of Antonio’s voice. “What have you got, Detective?”

Antonio spoke quickly. “Nora’s here.” Antonio paused for one full second to allow that to sink in before adding, “…And she can’t find her son Matthew.”

Bo felt his stomach drop, his mouth suddenly going dry, and a wave of nausea sweeping over him.

Antonio heard no response from Bo and spoke into the phone. “Sir, you still there?”

Bo swallowed hard, trying to find his voice. “Tell her I’m on my way.” He hung up his phone without another word.

Antonio turned to Nora, placing the phone back in its cradle. “He’s on his way.”

Bo stared down at the phone for just a moment. Gabrielle was standing there, listening. He had an odd look on his face. She knew their evening had been ruined. Bo hurried towards the bedroom, barely looking at her. “I’ve got to go back to the police station. Matthew is missing,” he told her as he went by her.
Before Bo could notice the paled look on Gabrielle’s face and even before she could respond, Bo had gone into the bedroom and changed quickly from his sweatpants and tee shirt into the pants and shirt he had just taken off. He slipped on some loafers, quickly pulled his gun strap over his shoulder, grabbed his keys, cell and badge from the table by the door and was gone.

To be continued...
