By Your Side (Part 6)

Last time:

Each one of them went to other part of the room and started to look around. Nora looked in his drawers while Bo looked between the shelves. Bo pulled out a small box. He turned to look at Nora.

B: Look at this.

She turned to look at him and examined the box he held.

N: Cocaine?

Bo nodded. He put the box back at the place he found it. He would need a search warrant for that.

B: Have you found anything?

Nora picked her head up from the drawers.

N: No. Not yet.

When she searched into the last drawer she froze.

N: Oh my God.. oh my God..

Bo went to Nora’s side. She was trembling. Tears began to roll down her face.

B: What is it, Nora? What did you find?

Bo looked at the drawer. He bit his bottom lip. He wrapped his arms around her when she leaned her head against his shoulder and cried.
**************************
Nora clung to his body. She asked herself many times if she was ready for this. And now she finally knew the answer of that. No. The answer was no. She wasn’t ready for this. She wanted to run away. She felt she was choking. She couldn’t breathe anymore. She felt that the walls were closing her in. She needed air.

Bo could feel only the anger that was racing into his body. His gaze never left the drawer’s contents. God, the man was sick, he fought his anger back. He looked carefully at what he saw in the drawer. Examining it. He felt sick. His arms wrapped Nora tight.

B: This son of a bitch! I’m going to kill him.

Nora turned her look at Bo. She saw anger in his face. She was afraid. She didn’t know what he was able to do to him. She wiped her tears and put her hands on his face. Her eyes were begging to him.

N: No, Bo. Take me home. Please take me home...

Looking into her eyes, Bo couldn’t feel only anger anymore. He felt pain. Deep pain into his chest. He pulled Nora to him and held her tightly as her tears kept rolling down her cheeks.

B: I’m so sorry, Nora. I’m sorry...

She looked into his eyes, her tears kept rolling down, her knees barely kept her steady on the ground and mixed feelings of pain and anger filled her body, mind and heart.

N: Just take me home...

Bo nodded. He understood her need to go as far away as she could from this place. He, too, felt the same need to leave. To get air. To clean his mind and let go of those feelings. Words were unnecessary now. He squeezed her hand and leaded her out. Once she felt the cold air, once she could feel the fresh air of the night she felt relieved. They settled into the car and sunk into the deep silence that overcame them.

They came into Nora’s house. Nora looked around the living room. It was the same place where he attacked her. She rubbed her chest, trying to breathe. She jumped when Bo touched the back of her shoulder. She turned around, relieved that it was only he.

B: I’m sorry.

N: That’s ok.. It’s just that I.. I’m tired. I think I’d better go to bed now.

B: You’d better do that. You need to rest, Red.

She nodded and smiled softly. She couldn’t find the strength to speak. Bo watched her as she went upstairs. He paced around her living room. He could only think of what he would do to this bastard as soon as he gets to put his hands on him, but he had to think clearly, he reminded to himself. He had to follow the rules. He couldn’t let his fury disrupt the investigation. He would have to use his mind and not his heart now. He would make sure that Nora gets justice. He stopped pacing when his eyes caught the picture of Matthew. He softly smiled as he noticed the sparkle in his son’s eyes. He couldn’t wait to tell Matt that he was his father. For some reason he felt the need of telling him that now more than ever. He just wanted to hold his son in his arms and make up for their lost time. And thanks to his stupidity he had a lot to make up for now. He took the picture and held it in his hands. He would make sure that Matthew gets justice too. He missed him. He was startled when Nora patted on his back.

B: Nora? What are you doing here? I thought you said you were going to bed...

N: I was, but I couldn’t stay alone. I feel weird and stupid.

B: Why? Because you’re scared? Nora, you have all the reasons to be scared, it’s natural.

N: Maybe.

She noticed the picture he held and smiled. She traveled her finger on Matt’s face.

N: It’s my favorite picture of him. He looks so happy, doesn’t he?

Bo smiled and nodded.

B: Yes, he does. It’s a beautiful picture.

N: I miss him so much.

B: Me too.

Nora turned her look at Bo. It felt good to hear him say that. She kept looking at him when he sat down on the couch and continued to speak.

B: I can’t wait to have him around here again. I can’t wait to hear him call me daddy. I lost too much time with him already and I want to make up for all this lost time.

Nora listened to him carefully. It was the first time he told her what he really felt about Matthew and now she felt guilty. She was the reason he couldn’t have Matthew now. She never realized how selfish she was. She walked to the couch and sat beside him. Looking deeply into his eyes.

N: Oh, Bo, I’m so sorry.

B: Why?

N: Because it’s my fault that we sent him to my parents, that you can’t spend more time with him now. I’m so sorry.

Bo smiled softly and held her hand.

B: Nora, don’t be silly, it’s not your fault. You are the last person I can blame. You’ve been so great since we found out the truth, you were supportive and understanding. You let me spend time with him and gave us the time to get to know each other. I will always be grateful to you for that.

He paused for a moment. He looked down. Their hands were linked together. She followed his gaze. She could feel moisture in her eyes. He looked up again and she followed his eyes again. Their eyes locked.

B: I’m the only one to blame for what happened Nora, for losing this time with Matthew.

N: How can you say it, Bo? You weren’t responsible for...

He cut her sentence.

B: Nora, I should have never walked out on you that night, I shouldn’t have let it go that far...

N: Bo, you were hurt. I don’t blame you for leaving. I hurt you. We thought that I was carrying someone else’s baby. You didn’t know that Matthew was yours. You would have never walked out on us if you had known.

B: I didn’t leave because of Matthew. I could have learned to love him and share him with Sam, but I would never be able to share your heart with him too.
Why did it hurt so much? Nora asked herself. She looked into his eyes and saw regret and pain. She never really gave Sam her heart. The only man she has ever given her heart completely was Bo. She gave him her heart long before she realized she fell deeply in love with him. But they moved on, so why did it still hurt so much? And why could she feel the need to hold him tight? To be in his arms? To feel the warmth of his body? To feel his heart pounding against hers? To feel like they were the only people in the world? To feel loved by him? She closed her eyes. No. She couldn’t think of that. She couldn’t let herself feel that way. It must be the memories, she tried to convince herself. Remembering her past with Bo always hurts... and she wondered why.

N: I didn’t know that’s how you feel, Bo. We have never really talked about that...

Bo looked into her eyes. It pained him so much to remember the past. He had regrets about what happened between him and Nora, but he let it go long ago. He put the past in the past and he decided to focus on his present. Thinking about the past only hurt him. It hurt and pained him to remember just as it hurt and pained him now to look how much pain there was in Nora’s eyes. He couldn’t figure out why it still hurt so much, even though he moved on. His eyes examined her face. She was tired and her eyes were red of the tears but she was still beautiful. So damn beautiful, he thought. He wanted to reach to her. To feel her skin against his. To feel her lips against his. To feel loved by her... He closed his eyes tightly. You have to stop doing this, Buchanan, he told to himself. Those feelings weren’t real, it was the situation, the closeness, he didn’t really feel that, he couldn’t. Not now. It was over. He didn’t really want to feel her against him... or did he?

B: It doesn’t matter now, Nora. We have other things to think about now.

Nora’s eyes wandered around the room now. She couldn’t look into his eyes anymore. She knew what he meant, what they had to talk about, but she wasn’t sure she was ready to deal with what they found out. It all happened so fast she hadn’t had the time to let it come into her mind yet. Bo followed her eyes. He was sorry about all she had to go through but he knew that the sooner they face it the sooner this nightmare would be left behind them. He put his hand on her face and forced her to look at him.

B: I know it’s hurt, Nora, but we have to act fast. You said in yourself that he was determined to get back at you, we don’t have time to waste.

N: I know that, Bo. You’re right. Sometimes I can’t think clearly. I should stop thinking with my heart instead of my mind. I want to get over with this and move on with my life. I need to do that.

B: And always remember that you’re not alone, Nora. I’m here with you..

N: I know that, thank you.

She paused. She took a deep breath.

N: So what are we going to do now?

B: We’ll go to talk to Hank first thing in the morning and tell him everything we found.

N: He will be furious if he knows what we did...

B: Nora, he cares about you very much, he will get over this.

Nora softly smiled.

B: We have to follow the book so we have to get search warrant. After the cops find what we found, we got him.

N: We don’t have any cause to get the warrant, Bo, it will not be easy and you know that. And even if we do get the warrant do you think it will be enough to arrest him?

B: We found Cocaine there, so in the worse case we can charge him for possession drugs, but considering the drugs and what we found I think we can put him in jail for a long time.

N: I hope so.

Nora felt nervous. She was scared it wouldn’t be enough to catch him. She was a lawyer and she dealt with that kind of stuff many times before, but it has never been so hard as it was now. It was about her life now, not some stranger’s life. Was Bo right? He was excellent cop, but she knew that he was involved too much. What if he couldn’t think clear enough? What if it wasn’t enough to arrest him? But, for God’s sake, he was sick, she knew it now, and they had to catch him, it must be enough. Seeing the old newspapers, the old articles about that trial she lost, the trail that put him in jail, the way he destroyed her face in each one of her photos there. And there were recent articles about her too. About the `Woman of the year`, her train accident and other recent stuff about her. But most of all, what caused her tremble was her photo and the subtitles on it `Fucking bitches always get what they deserved`. She shivered as she remembered reading that. She got up and paced around the room. She couldn’t start crying again. She had to be stronger. She had to do something. She had to think of something else. Anything but this. Bo watched her carefully. He knew he had to do something, to say something. He knew she needed something else to focus on right now. He just needed to figure out what could it be. He smiled softly.

B: Are you hungry?

Nora looked at him surprisingly.

N: Hungry? Now?

B: Yes. I just realized that we skipped dinner and I thought..

Nora smiled softly. She knew what he tried to do and she was grateful to him for that. He always knew what she needed. He knew her so well.

N: Bo, it’s almost 2 a.m. now! We can’t eat now..

Bo got up and walked towards the phone. He wasn’t really hungry but if that were what Nora needed to distract her mind he would do it.

B: Hmmm.. what about Pizza? I can really use a pizza now to sooth my stomach.

He smiled and Nora smiled him back.

N: You’re crazy. Where will you buy a pizza at this hour?

B: I’m sure we can find some place that has 24 hours delivery. C’mon, we can have junk food celebration!
She looked at him confusing. Celebrate? She had nothing to celebrate. Her life was a wreck now. But she did feel she could use a pizza too. She looked at him seriously.

N: Celebration? Bo, I’m not sure I have what to celebrate now.

B: Of course you do. Tomorrow this nightmare is going to be behind you and you can move on with your life. And mostly, you can have Matthew around again.

Nora smiled as he said Matthew’s name. She really did have a reason to celebrate. She had her son. Bo smiled when he saw her smile. He was amazed how her eyes sparkled again whenever he just reminded his name. It was pure love. And he felt that love too. It was amazing how this little boy could make them smile even in times like this.

B: That’s it! What better reason do you have than celebrate our son?

Our son. Why did it sound so good? They both wondered. Matthew was their son and it was the best feeling in the world.

An hour later they both stuffed pizza into their mouths. Eating pizza and drinking root beer, why did it feel so natural? Nora wondered. Bo enjoyed looking at her eating. Some things never change, he smiled. So many things had changed between him and Nora, but this old feeling he could feel now had never changed. It still felt good, comfortable to be with Nora and share pizza with her. They would have a rough day tomorrow and he was glad that he could distract Nora’s mind for a while.

Watching her smile made him feel happy. All he ever wanted for her was to be happy. She looked at him and started to talk between the bites she took.

N: So are you going to tell me what happened between you and Gabby?

Bo looked at her surprisingly. He wasn’t ready for that question.

B: Where did this question come from?

N: You don’t talk about her and you spend most of your time here with me, I figured that something wasn’t right between you two.

B: We broke up.

Nora put the pizza aside. She began to sorry she brought up the subject.

N: Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t know...

B: You have nothing to be sorry for, Red. I should have done it long ago. It wasn’t right between us, it didn’t feel right and it was the best thing to leave.

N: Yeah, but you loved her, it must hurt..

B: No, I thought I loved her, but I’ve never really loved any other woman since..

He stopped. Since you, Red, he continued his sentence in his mind. He took another slice of pizza and tried to change the subject.

B: This pizza is so good, isn’t it?

Since what, Bo? Nora asked herself. You’re doing it again, Nora. Get over this. You moved on. Just stop thinking about him. Leave it at that.

N: Yeah, it’s great.

She sipped her beer and looked at him. They were silent. Both felt uncomfortable. After a while Nora started to talk again.

N: Bo, as soon as it over I want us to talk to Matthew and tell him the truth.

She smiled softly and he looked at her.

N: I want him to know that you’re his father. I want him to know what a wonderful father he has. I want him to be like you, Bo. I want you to hear your son calls you daddy.

Bo felt moisture in his eyes. He was so happy. So grateful. He smiled.

B: Thank you, Red. There is nothing else in the world that I’d like more than to hear him call me daddy. Thank you so much.

N: You deserve to be happy, Bo. I want you to be happy. That’s all I’ve always wanted for you.

B: I want you to be happy too, Nora.

Nora smiled and continued to eat her pizza. A few minutes later she threw the piece of pizza she had in her hand on the table and leaned back against the back of the couch. Touching her stomach.

N: God, I’m full. That was great, Bo, thanks.

Bo wiped his mouth with a napkin and then leaned back too. He turned to look at her and their eyes locked together. They were only inches apart. He smiled. They stared at each other for a while. His hand trembled. He wanted to touch her. To feel her. To have her.

B: I think we’d better go to sleep now; we’re going to have one heck of a day tomorrow...

He was so close she could feel him breathing. She wanted to reach to him. To feel him. To have him. Her lips parted. She got up. She had to stop having these feelings.

N: Yeah, you’re right.

They woke up early the next morning and headed to the station. Bo knew that Hank would be mad at him for risking Nora and going undercover with her, but he also knew that he would understand him. They walked into Hank’s office. Hank noticed by their looks that something was wrong. They filled him in and he reacted in the same way Bo knew he would. He was furious at them, especially at Bo, but he understood.

H: It’s not going to be easy to get this search warrant, you realize that, right?

B: For God’s sake, Hank, this man is a rapist!

N: Bo, he’s right, basically we have no reason to believe he was the one who attacked me.

B: We do know that it was he. We saw the newspapers and the articles, the Cocaine, the man is sick!

N: Yes, we know that, Bo, but we weren’t supposed to be in his office and to see that..

B: Can you think of something, Hank?

H: Give me a few minutes.

Hank started to make a few calls. It wasn’t easy to get this search warrant but he had to get it. He had to get it for Nora’s sake. Bo and Nora sat nervously and hoped they would get the warrant. Hank hung up the phone, looked at them and smiled.

H: I got it!

N: You did? How?

H: I have a few friends. The judge will give us the warrant.

Nora happily hugged Hank.

N: Oh, thank you, Hank.. thank you so much.

They got the warrant and after two hours the cops brought Eric into the station. They stopped in front of Bo. Bo just stared at him. He wanted to strangle him but he just looked into his eyes.

B: Take him to the investigation room; I’ll be there in a minute.

He walked into his office. Nora was sitting there. Nervously waiting.

B: He’s here, Red.

Nora slowly got up but she felt like her legs couldn’t carry her. She wiped her nose and walked closer to Bo.

N: Make sure he pays for what he did to me, Bo...

Bo pulled her tightly to him and held her. Then he looked deeply into her eyes and caressed her face softly.

B: I will, Red. I promise you that I will...

Bo walked out his office and headed towards the investigation room.

To be continued...
