BO'S CHALLENGE PART 2
PREVIOUSLY in PART 1:
Bo and Nora win the police brutality case brought by RJ.
Bo begins to have feelings for Nora.
During a physical, Larry finds something disturbing and asks Bo
to have a biopsy to confirm or rule out prostate cancer.
LARRY: It's what we suspected Bo. I'm sorry. You have prostate cancer. But that's not a death sentence.
BO: Oh well, that makes me feel a WHOLE lot better. Cancer. It's something you assume happens to other people.
LARRY: Yes, but we caught it in the early stages and that's good.
BO: What are my options?
LARRY: Well, there's really only one smart option-- that's the radical prostatectomy. Recovery is three days in the hospital and some time at home.
BO: Wait a minute Larry. I've heard about that surgery-- it can cause impotence and urinary incontinence. I don't want to live like that. You can just forget it if that's the only option. I'm too young for that. Sorry. No way.
LARRY: Bo, you're right, a radical prostatectomy used to result in impotence and incontinence, but not anymore. A doctor at Johns Hopkins developed a nerve-sparing procedure that allows surgeons to remove the prostate without damaging nerves that control erections and urinary control. Three in four men your age regain potency.
BO: What about the one who doesn't? I don't want to be him.
LARRY: Bo, this is your life were talking about.
BO: Yeah, and I'll get back to you on how I want to live it. Goodbye Larry.
Bo hung up the phone and walked out of the office. He drove
to Crossroads and had a beer, but the mood there was too light.
People kept coming up to him and offering their congratulations.
It was too hard being gracious. He left and just started driving
around.. listening to his scanner.. trying to keep his mind off
what Larry had said. Many, many men had faced this same problem.
Bob Dole had been very open about it. So had Tour de France champion
Lance Armstrong. He felt vain and embarrassed-- But who wants
to go the rest of their life without sex? What if he was the one
in four? He needed to talk to someone. He REALLY needed to talk.
Hank and Lisa had plans tonight. He didn't feel like talking to
another man about it anyway. Nora? What was he thinking? She was
his ex-wife, for gosh sakes. He kept driving around, thinking
of reasons NOT to call her-- until he drove up in front of her
house. The lights were on. No other cars were there. He could
always back out. He rang the doorbell.
Nora answered a little out of breath.
NORA: Bo, hi.
BO: I'm sorry I didn't call. Is this a bad time?
NORA: Oh no, come in, I just have a little guy who thinks
it's funny to run from Mommy when his diaper needs
changing. Maybe you can help me cut him off at the pass.
Bo saw Matthew take off around the corner as soon as Nora walked his direction. Bo walked in and closed the door. They were so cute together. Matthew was laughing as Nora chased him. He crawled under the dining room table and gave her a look that said, 'I win.'
NORA: No you don't, buster.
She grabbed his ankles-- sliding him out from under the table-- giggling. Nora scooped him up before he could take off again.
NORA: At least he's worn himself out. He'll probably go to sleep pretty quickly now. Let me change him and put his jammies on and we can talk.
Bo smiled and nodded as she went upstairs. He felt better already-- just being in her presence. Nora came downstairs and got Matthew's bottle. He took it eagerly and seemed ready to sleep.
NORA: Have a seat-- watch out for small toys in the cushions. What's up, Commissioner?
Bo just sat there looking at her.
NORA: Bo-- is something wrong? There is, isn't there?
