The Cornerstone – Part 1

Matthew continued to rummage through his father’s closet looking for a football.

‘Mom would yell at dad. His closet is even messier than mine!’ Matthew thought to himself.

Moving various pairs of loafers, a baseball mitt, ties that had fallen on the floor, a soccer ball, socks, belts and other assorted items, his small hand brushed against something rough at the back of the closet. He picked it up. It was half of a brick, jagged in the middle and smooth on the outside.

For the life of him young Matthew could not figure out why his father had half of a brick in his closet.

“Whatcha got there, son? Did you find the football?”

Matthew was so startled he almost dropped the brick.

“A brick! Dad, why do you have a brick in your closet?”

Bo smiled at the sight of the small piece of cornerstone he and Nora had split so many years ago. He remembered it all so very vividly.

“That there son is called a cornerstone. It’s part of the foundation of a house…the corner. Get it?
Cornerstone.”

“But what is it?”

“It’s from our old house.”

“But why do you have it?”

Bo smiled at Matt thoughtfully and pondered the question brought up by his very smart and inquisitive young son.

“Well, your mom and I loved our old house. We had a lot of really great times there. I wanted a little keepsake before I sold the place. And I ended up giving your mother half.”

“I wish I could see the house.” Matt said wistfully.

“Maybe I’ll take you by since it seems we have to go out and buy a new football.”

“Cool!”

“Oh and Matt…let’s keep this little conversation to ourselves. Okay?”

“Sure dad.” But Matthew made sure to keep this experience tucked in the corner of his mind.

The next evening, Nora checked herself in the mirror once again. Moving strands of hair this way and that, she couldn’t settle on a look that she liked one hundred per cent. She was much happier after she added just the right earrings and a necklace.

The doorbell rang and she hurried down the stairs.
“Bo, what are you doing here?” she asked semi-disappointed as she was expecting Daniel.

She looked like a vision as Bo stared at her blankly. He was almost regretting he had to do this. For a second he was about to change his mind and leave. But his son’s life could be at stake. So could hers for that matter.

“Bo? What is it? You know Matthew’s at Stevie’s tonight.”

“No, it’s not that.”

“Then what is it? I’m expecting Daniel at any minute.”

Bo’s mood quickly changed at the mere mention of his name.

“Going someplace pretty nice I see!” Bo said sarcastically.

“Yes, the Waterside Inn.”

Bo nodded his head. “Ah yes, very good choice.”

Nora was getting annoyed. “Bo, what is this about?”

“But, I think the Waterside Inn has done some redecorating….gray cinder block walls, sturdy metal bars, and the quality of the food has just gone down hill.”

Nora laughed. “What are you talking about?”

“Colson is in my jail cell under arrest for DWI.”

“What?!?”

“Just what I said. Nora, I want Matthew NO WHERE near this guy. Do you understand? You either for that matter! He’s a drunk!”

Nora was flabbergasted. Her mind was spinning.
“I don’t understand. Daniel has been sober for almost a year now.”

“When my guys picked him up, he was all over the road. He couldn’t walk a straight line. His speech is slurred. The whole shebang.”

“Oh my god.”

“Sorry to spoil your evening.”

“No, you have nothing to be sorry for. I’m just glad he was stopped before he could hurt someone.”

“You and me both.” Bo replied solemnly.

Nora sat down on the couch. Her night was ruined. Her future was ruined, again.

“You really like him, don’t you?”

Nora was caught off guard by Bo’s question. They hadn’t discussed each other’s love life since they were quarantined together.

“What?” she asked innocently.

“I said you really like him, don’t you?”

Nora rose from the couch and stared him down. “Bo, if this is your way to say ‘I told you so’, I don’t want to hear it! You can leave now!” she pointed to the door angrily.

“No, that’s not what I meant! I’m just asking if you like him….or has it gotten to love?” Bo almost choked on the word. He didn’t want to believe that Nora could have gotten to that point with Colson. It made him sick to even think of the possibility.

“No, I am not in love with Daniel. But, I think I could have fallen in love with him. But yet again, good ole’ Nora picks herself a real winner!”

She kicked off her shoes in anger toward the stairs. She threw her designer purse and shawl toward the stairs landing perfectly on top of the shoes.

“Nora, relax…”

He noticed her earrings and necklace that she had placed on the coffee table in the midst of their discussion. Those were the only things she didn’t throw.

“I gave you that set. It’s a good thing you didn’t throw those.”

Nora cringed. It didn’t even dawn on her that he might see the jewelry.

“You always did have great taste.” She tried to make a joke. “I only throw things that are non-breakable and only when I’m mad!”

Bo just sort of smiled half-heartedly. “Yes, I remember that.”

“Bo, what is going on here?”

“What do you mean?”

“We’ve sort of had this discussion already about Daniel and me. Why do you care? I’m the one who got dumped on and you’re acting like you lost your best friend.”

“I think I did.”
