The Cornerstone – Part 2

Last time:

“Bo, what is going on here?”

“What do you mean?”

“We’ve sort of had this discussion already about Daniel and me. Why do you care? I’m the one who got dumped on and you’re acting like you lost your best friend.”

“I think I did.”

****
“I should go.” Bo said.

“Oh no you don’t. Let me make us some coffee and we can talk.”

“No, really, I should go. It’s getting late. Tell Matt I’ll give him a call tomorrow.”

Bo started to walk toward the door.

“Bo, don’t walk out on me.”

“Nora, look, I’m tired. I’ve got my father in St. Ann’s. I’ve got Colson in jail. I’m running out of hours in the day to spend with Matt. I’m under a lot of stress. Don’t pay attention to anything I say.”

“I do pay attention, Bo. And it sounds like you’re hurting. Let me help you.”

For the first time all evening, Bo finally smiled at her. It was that puppy dog smile that could melt her heart.

“Come and sit down. I’ll make the coffee. The night is young, as they say” she tried to lighten the mood.

“Okay.”

He knew he was making a mistake. He didn’t want to admit to anything he was feeling tonight. He took off his tie and his suit jacket and sunk into the corner of the couch. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes. His moment of peace was interrupted by his cell phone. He pulled the phone off his belt.

“Buchanan.”

“Commissioner, its Tim. D.A. Colson is asking for Nora. In fact, he won’t shut up about it.”

Bo clenched his jaw. He secretly wished he could make him ‘shut up about it’.

“Okay, thanks Tim. I’ll tell Nora but I can’t guarantee anything. Try to ignore him.”

He snapped his phone closed and put in back in the holder on his belt.

Nora was rummaging through the kitchen looking for anything…a cookie, a cracker, a piece of bread…something, anything! Finally she found some cookies she had hidden in her secret emergency hiding place.

“Here we go. Coffee and cookies.”

“Um, Nora, I just had a call. Daniel is asking for you. He’s driving the guys at the station crazy.”

This was not something Nora wanted to hear now.

“Well let him keep asking. I’m not going to see him.”

“Are you sure?” Bo asked.

“Yes, I’m sure. I don’t want to see him now and certainly not in a drunken state.”

“It’s your decision.”

“That’s right. Now enough about Daniel. Tell me what’s going on, Bo.”

Bo sighed. “I really don’t want to talk about this now or maybe ever” he laughed.

“It’s not funny. Bo, you said you felt like you were losing me as your friend and I want you to know that you’re not. We’ve gone through too much. We need each other.”

“As friends?”

“Yes, as friends.” Nora was confused. “Why? What else would we be?”

Bo took a gulp of the hot coffee perhaps wishing it would give him a boost of confidence.

“No....friends are about it.”

She looked at him curiously. “I’m confused.”

“Can we talk about this tomorrow, I have to go.”

“I don’t want to pressure you.”

“Thanks for the coffee. See ya.”

Bo went to the door with Nora following him.

“Bo?”

“Yes?” he turned to face her.

“How’s Asa?”

“I don’t know. I visit him and he just stares at me. Renee is with him night and day. Clint’s coming in. I have no idea if he’s faking or not. The doctors don’t know either right now.”

Nora rubbed his arm. Bo felt a chill run through him at her touch.

“Matt and I will go visit with him.”

Bo smiled. “That’d be great. Thanks.”

“Sure.”

“Goodnight, Nora.”

“’Night, Bo.”
