The Cornerstone – Part 4

Last time:

“Okay. Are you sure you don’t want to stay around for the late, late show? We still have ‘Mr. Roberts’ to watch.”

Bo smiled. “Maybe with some more coffee, I would get my second wind.”

“I can make a second pot.”

“And maybe some more popcorn?”

“Sure!”

“Okay, you twisted my arm.”

“Great! Besides, we still haven’t discussed Daniel…you know from the other night.”

“But……”

“Be right back!” Nora disappeared into the kitchen.

****
She returned with some fresh coffee and a new bowl of popcorn.

“So, where were we?”

“We were about to watch the movie.”

“No, we were going to talk about you, me, and Daniel.”

“We were? I think I was asleep.”

“Keep trying, Bo” she laughed.

“Look, it’s no secret I don’t like the guy and he has serious problems. I just think you can do so much better for yourself.”

“Well, I agree and I intend to tell him so.”

“I think you need to stay away from him for your safety and for Matt’s.”

“And I will. Now what aren’t you telling me?”

“Nothing” Bo shrugged his shoulders and paced around the room.

“Bo, I know you. Spill it!” she demanded.

“You’re going to think I’ve lost it.”

“No...I won’t. Please tell me.”

He paused for a moment. “Okay. I’m feeling things about you that I thought were long over and forgotten.”

Nora laughed. “Things? Define things.”

“It’s hard to define. It’s memories….it’s wishes….it’s hopes.”

“About me? And about us?”

“Yes. See, I knew you’d think I was whacked.”

“I don’t think you’re whacked. But, you must know that they’re won’t be another ‘us’, right?”

Bo wanted to crawl under the couch. This was not the reaction he was expecting. He thought he noticed Nora reacting to him like he was reacting to her. His radar was obviously way off.

“I think I should leave. It’s late.”

“No, Bo. We need to finish this.”

“I’m not sure I like that we’ve been reduced to a ‘this’, Nora.”

Nora was protecting herself from more hurt. She wasn’t going to cave into him. She wasn’t going to let herself hope.

“I don’t mean to sound cavalier. I think you are lonely and that’s okay. That’s normal. I’ve been lonely too. I don’t think the solution is you and I getting back together, though. I’m sorry, Bo. What about Dr. Miller? She seems to like you.”

Nora hated her and she couldn’t believe she was suggesting that this woman would go out with her ex-husband!

“No…it’s okay. I have my answer. Now, I really need to go. Thanks for the evening. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.”

Bo kissed her gently on the cheek. “I’m really sorry you don’t feel the same way.”

Nora couldn’t respond. She just sort of nodded and closed the door behind him.

She fell into the couch cushion and cried herself to sleep.

Matthew took his familiar spot on the sidewalk and stared at the house.

It was getting colder now and the house looked so dreary to him not like it had before.

Something was different, but he couldn’t place what. He looked at every inch and every nook and cranny and corner.

Then he noticed the sign. A ‘Llanview Real Estate For Sale’ sign in the front yard. He raced home to tell his father.

Bo was surprised by the knock at his door. He took off early and was about to settle in and watch the news while he ate his pizza. The mere sight of the pizza made him think of Nora. He made sure to buy more beer.

“Dad! Open up! It’s me.”

Panicked, Bo rushed to the door as fast as he could. “Matt, what are you doing here? Did you ride your bike in the dark?”

“Yes! But I had to!”

“What’s wrong? Are you okay? Is mom okay?”

“We’re fine! The house is for sale!!”

Calming a little, he asked “What house?”

“The cornerstone house….our house! I ride by it all the time and today I saw the sign! Can we buy it??”

Bo got annoyed. “No! We can’t buy it! I don’t need a house just for myself.”

“And me” Matt replied.

Bo grimaced and pulled his son into a big hug and squeezed as hard as he could. “I’m sorry, bud. Yes you too. I always want you with me, don’t ever doubt that. But, this place is cool, isn’t it?” Bo looked around at the sad place that was his home.

“I guess.”

“Look, take your coat off and have some pizza with me. Call your mom and tell her you’re here.”

“Okay” he said in a depressed tone and he walked away.

Bo sighed heavily. He knew how Matt felt, but he couldn’t let on. He already knew the house was for sale. Years before he had asked the new homeowners to let him know if they ever decided to sell it because he would be interested in buying it back. He ran his hands over the couch and thought back to when they went furniture shopping for the house. Bo wanted a new couch but Nora reminded him of why they loved the old couch. He just smiled and took another bite of pizza. He would never get rid of the couch…ever.

Daniel was placed on administrative leave pending review by the higher ups. It was well hinted to him that he should resign his position as District Attorney. He wasn’t budging…for now. He kept pestering Nora with phone calls begging her to see him.

She agreed to meet him at the Palace restaurant. She wanted to keep it very public with the thought that he may not make a scene.

Daniel rose from the booth when Nora appeared. He held out the chair for her.

“Nora, thank you for coming.”

“Daniel, I intend to make this short and sweet. I suggest you resign and get some help. Look into rehab.”

“I’m sorry. If Bo hadn’t been in the way, I never would have taken a drink.”

Nora pursed her lips in annoyance. “Daniel, for the millionth time, Bo is not in the way and he never was in the way! If you can’t accept that, I can’t help you.”

With that Bo entered the restaurant and stopped in his tracks. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He went to their table.

“Nora, can I see you for a moment?” he asked, completely ignoring Daniel.

“We’re talking!” Daniel shouted.

“And I’m NOT talking to you” Bo replied, angrily.

Nora followed Bo out onto the patio.

“What is it, Bo?”

It was the first time they had talked since she gave him the brush off.

“I can’t control what you do. I can’t believe you’re giving this guy a second chance. But, I beg you…keep Matthew away from Daniel.”

Nora sighed and collected her thoughts. “Bo, I haven’t given Daniel a second chance. He’s been bugging me since the night he was arrested to talk to me. I’m only here to get him to resign as D.A. and to get him to realize he needs some help. Secondly, if you think I would jeopardize Matthew’s life, then you don’t know me at all!”

She turned her back to him. Bo regretted the words the minute they came out of his mouth.

“I’m sorry. I know you would never do anything to hurt Matt. I guess I just got so mad when I saw you two together. I wasn’t expecting it. I’ll get out of your hair.”
He turned to leave.

“Bo, wait. I know you didn’t mean it.”

“Thanks. Again, I’m sorry.”

She smiled at him. “It’s okay. How have you been? When I ask Matthew he just says ‘you’re okay’.”

Bo smiled. “I guess he’s getting into the teenage years early with the one or two word answers.”

“No. I think he’s concerned about you, but he won’t tell me.”

“I’m fine. I told you how I felt, you told me how you feel, and now I’m dealing with it.”

“Are you?” she asked.

“Yes. Are you?”

“What do you mean?”

“Nora, as much as you say we could never work again, your eyes say different. They could always give you away.”

She looked away from him again. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Face it, Nora. We belong together. Now matter how hard you tried with Sam or Troy or Daniel, I’m always there. The same way you are always with me no matter how much I denied it. I know now that you will be the only woman for me.”

“What are you saying? That you’re giving up on love because of me? That’s ridiculous!”

“Maybe it is. But I have my work…I have Matt. I’ll get by.”

“This sounds like a guilt trip you’re laying on me and I don’t like it very much.”

“No, that’s not my intention. My intention is to get you to rethink your feelings and follow your heart.”

“I know how I feel, Bo.”

“Do you?”

“Yes. I do love you…as a friend, as the father of my child. I loved you once with my heart and soul. I can’t do it again.”

“Can’t or won’t?”

She paused. “Won’t.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Believe what you want to believe.”

“I will.”

He walked away and Nora let her tears flow.
