The Course of True Love
Never Runs Smooth~Part 31

Chapter Thirty One:

Asa’s driver dropped them off just before midnight. Bo carried Matthew upstairs and they put him to bed. They walked into their bedroom together. Nora walked over in front of the mirror and started to remove her jewelry.

Bo walked up behind her and kissed the back of her neck. She leaned against him as he continued to plant kisses across her shoulders. He slowly unzipped her dress; her breath catching in her throat. He slipped the straps down off her shoulders. Her dress quickly lies on the floor. He reaches around and lays his hands across her stomach, as he continues to kiss her neck. His hands travel higher sending chills down her spine. He removed the rest of her clothing as they stood there in front of the mirror. He continued to caress her body; driving her insane with every touch. She turns around and begins to unbutton his shirt. His clothes soon join her dress on the floor. He picks her up and carries her to the bed.

They made love all night long, and as the morning sun begins to shine through the windows they lay lovingly in each other’s arms.

He propped himself up in his elbow and looked at her. He ran his hand down her body and stopped; resting them on her stomach.

“You know I was just thinking, I wonder when this little one was conceived.”

“I know exactly when she was conceived.”

“You do?”

“Yeah I do. It was after our night of dancing at the Palace, our first night together.”

“That night was amazing and now we have living proof of just how amazing it was.”

Nora laid her head against his chest and they continued to talk about the baby. Nora fell asleep and just as Bo was about to his cell phone rang. He quickly grabbed it not wanting to wake Nora up.

“Buchanan. What? Okay, I’m on my way; I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

Although he tried to be as quiet as possible Nora woke up and noticed him getting dressed.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m sorry, honey I’ve got to go down to the station.”

“At 5 a.m.? What happened?”

“The suspect that we had in custody for my shooting was found dead in his cell this morning, they think it was foul play.”

“Why in the world would someone want him dead?”

“I have no idea, honey, but I’m going to first and foremost figure out who that kid was and why he shot me of all people, and then who in the hell would’ve wanted him dead while he was in police custody.”

“He kept his mouth shut up until the very end.”

“He sure did. I don’t even think his Public Defender knew who he was. He was protecting someone that’s for sure.”

“Promise me something, Bo?”

“Anything.”

“Please be careful. There’s just something about this case that doesn’t feel right. I can’t put my finger on it, it’s just a feeling I’m getting.”

“I’ll be careful, I promise. I’m just going down to the station to make sure we get to the bottom of this as soon as possible. Now, (kisses her) Go back to sleep, okay. We really did not get much sleep last night.”

“Yeah but we had a lot of fun.”

“No arguments here. Why don’t you have Maryann take Matt to school and you take the morning off.”

“I have a lot of work to do, Bo. I really shouldn’t take the morning off.”

“You need to rest and no more staying up late, for either of us.”

“Oh yeah right, I’ll believe it when I see it, mister.”

“Oh I can be a paragon of strength and restraint if I need to.”

“We’ll see.”

Bo leaned across the bed to give her a kiss; a kiss that led to so much more….

An hour later Bo was walking out the door. Nora watched him pull out of the drive. She walked back into the house trying to shake the feeling that this case was going to affect their lives way beyond Bo’s shooting. She went back upstairs and fell into a fitful sleep. Matthew woke up an hour later. Nora helped him get ready for school, but she was clearly distracted. Matthew noticed the change in her mood…

“What’s wrong, mommy?”

“Nothings wrong, sweetie.”

“Then why do you look so sad?”

“Mommy’s not sad. I just have a lot of things on my mind, okay?”

“Okay.”

Doorbell rings….

“Alright, that’s probably MaryAnn so go get your backpack before you’re late for school.”

Matthew ran into his room to get his stuff while Nora went to answer the door. She glanced back up the stairs expecting to hear stomping feet any minute.

“Matthew Hanen Buchanan, hurry up”, she yelled as she opened the door. “Hi, MaryAnn, Matthew will be down in a second.”

“How are you feeling today, Ms. Buchanan?”

“Tired but good.”

“Well that’s to be expected, I guess.”

Matthew came barreling down the stairs; backpack trailing behind him on the floor.

“Bye, Mom. I’ll see ya later.”

“Bye sweetheart. I’ll see you tonight when I get home from work.”

MaryAnn and Matthew left. Nora decided to take Bo’s advice and take the morning off. She called into the office and told them she would be in around lunchtime. She crawled up on the couch with a book, but quickly fell asleep.

At the station…

Bo was sitting in his office waiting on the ME’s report to come back. When he got to the station an hour earlier Antonio was looking over the visitor’s logs trying to connect any of the visitors to the teenager they had in custody. Bo was on the phone with the Mayor when Antonio knocked on his half opened door. Bo looked up and motioned him in. Ten minutes later Bo hung up the phone.

“Rough morning, huh?”

“You could say that. The Mayor is all over this one. He wants to know how a prisoner in our custody ends up dead. Frankly, I want to know the same thing. This case is nothing but a bunch of unanswered questions. Let’s look at what we have to go with. We have no idea who this kid is, why he shot me in an alley, or why someone would want him dead, so bad that they’d risk walking into a police station and committing murder.”

“This case has stumped me since it started. We can’t find any connection between you and this kid. It’s like he appeared out of no where.”

“Let’s just hope the truth hasn’t died with him. So what did you find out when you went through the visitor log.”

“The only person who’s been by to visit the kid except his lawyer was Troy.”

Back at the barn….

Nora is still asleep on the couch, her hands lovingly and protectively lying across her slightly rounded stomach. She has such a peaceful and content look on her face.
The front door slowly opens and a figure quietly approaches the couch. A hand reaches out and brushes a stay hair from her face.

To be continued.....
