Down the road Part 13...

Bo was up early and headed for the station as soon as the bus picked up Matthew for school. He dialed Len & Selma's room at the Palace over and over trying to find out if Nora was awake although he knew it was way too early for her. They weren't answering.

He called Andrew to find out if she had called him, she hadn't.

He called Larry - he hadn't heard anything either but let Bo know he wasn't terribly amused that Nora had stormed out. (Bo, She is scheduled for another treatment next week. She's in Llanview for our love and support, not so we can piss her off in person!)

Bo hung up the phone as Hank walked in.

H: What the hell happened to you?

B: Nora left last night

H: Aw hell… Back to Chicago?

B: No, The Palace

H: What happened?

B: You know, I am not exactly sure but I upset her when I reacted to Sam.

H: Well, you could tell that

B: She tried to talk to me about it - I guess I didn't say the right things… I just wanted her to calm down.

H: Oh yeah.. trying to calm her down when she's angry always works! Doesn't that usually make her madder?

B: Thanks for the advice.

H: Are you all right?

B: No, damnit I'm not.

Bo picked up a book on his desk and threw it across the room.

B: No, I am not all right! She left… again! And there was nothing I could do about it. How can I love her so much and not have any idea what to say to her when it matters! I scared her and I'm not even sure why… I don't know what I did. She needed to be away from me. One minute she's on the couch, relaxed and smiling and the next she's calling a taxi. One night she's chasing me around the living room… the next night she leaves. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!?

H: Why don't we get out of here?

B: Did she call you?

H: No

B: Rachel?

H: No.

Bo looked at his desk with a puzzled look…. Then around his office.

B (out the door): Sophia… where is my computer?! I said I wanted a red one… where is it!?

S: Someone stole it commissioner… but I'm on it… looks like someone in the mayor's office wanted it...

B: Damnit… nothing is going right around here! Find the guy and arrest him.

S: You want me to arrest the mayor?

B: I want you to arrest everyone in the whole damn office… I want my computer back… I'm the police commissioner for god's sake... they can't just steal things from my desk!
Officer Tim walks in

OT: Sir, I'll take care of it…

H(gratefully): Thank you Officer.

S (to Officer Tim): You going to arrest the mayor?

OT: No, I'm going to find out if Mrs. Buchanan is awake yet. He's gonna explode soon!
Officer Tim called the Palace and got the Front Desk Guy

OT: Hey guy… are the Hanen's up yet?

FDG: Yeah, Len is arguing with Asa again

OT: Could you get him?

FDG: Aw, I hate to do that.. Looks like Len is winning.

OT: Look, the commissioner is about to explode here - I need to find out how Mrs. Buchanan is…

FDG: Ok… I'll get him. Oh.. by the way… Joe called last night, late.

OT: Joe? Joe from Chicago Joe? Damn… Please just get me Len… and is there any way you could get rid of that message?

FDG: I'll see if I can erase it... as long as you make sure I don't get arrested.

OT: Oh yeah.. the commissioner is really gonna arrest you for erasing a message to Mrs. Buchanan from her old boyfriend. I don't think so.

FDG: I'm gonna quote you if I get caught!

OT: No problem… go get Len…

FDG takes the phone to Len.

FDG: Sir, it's Officer Tim

L: Hello Officer, how can I help you?

Officer Tim described the scene at the police station to Len.

L: Ok, I'll be right over.

Len hung up the phone.

A: Where are you going?

L: Over to the police station… it appears your son and my daughter had a fight.

A: So what's the problem?

L: It was a biggie… Bo's threatening to arrest the mayor

A: Well hell, it's about time!

L: You're a big help.
***************************.
Police station

Len walked up to Bo's office

L: May I come in?

B: Please tell me she's ok

L: Bo, she's still asleep

B: What did I do?

L: Nora and her mother talked for a little while last night - I wasn't invited

B: About what a jerk I am, no doubt.

L: Well, I think it was more along the lines of you scared her and she didn't know what else to do so she left. I don't think she got much sleep last night so she probably won't be up and around very much until this afternoon. Bo…

B: What?

L: I don't think arresting the mayor is going to impress Nora.

B: He took my stuff… I'm gonna lock 'em all up

RJ's

Rae woke up and looked around. Something was wrong.. then she realized what it was.. RJ was missing. There was a note on the pillow….

"Rae, I have to find something…I'll be back. I love you. If Rachel calls, tell her I'll show whenever she wants me. I'll be back soon. No need to worry. Love you - RJ"

Rae picked up the phone and called John Sykes.

The Parsonage
Late Afternoon

The taxi pulled up and Nora climbed out. Andrew greeted her with a big hug and walked her into the house.

A: So, I hear you had a late night last night.

N: How did you hear?

A: Bo called early this morning. Wanted to know if I knew if you were all right.

N: Why can't he just leave me alone!?

A: Nora, is that fair?

N: Fair?

A: Didn't you promise him you wouldn't run again. That you would try and work things out?

N: I only went to the Palace

A: Late at night, without warning, because you got scared… sounds like running to me.

N: I need some time… to think about all this.

A: Would you like me to arrange a meeting between the two of you?

N: You mean like 'couples counseling'?

A: Something like that. Maybe it would help to have a mediator of some type…

N: Can I think about it?

A: Of course… Have you had lunch?

N: No

A: Why don't I make us some sandwiches and we can talk.
Nora and Andrew talked for several hours. Nora promised to think about the couples counseling. She took a taxi back to the Palace. As she checked into her room, the phone was ringing.. it was Joe

N: Hi Joe

J: Hi, How are you?

N: Ok, tired…

They chatted for awhile. Nora enjoyed being able to just chat… no big scenes, Joe didn't threaten to punch anyone, he wasn't brooding. He updated her on what he had done with her stuff and closing out her apartment in Chicago.

J: Well, I need to go... I just wanted to see how you are.

N: I appreciate it…

J: Can I ask how it's going with your commissioner?

N: He's not mine

J: That well?

N: Joe

J: Look, I would love.. I mean really really love it if you two can't work things out. But I saw you together… He makes you happy… being with him - you just light up when he comes into the room. He can't take his eyes off of you. Don't give that up without a helluva fight.

N: I suppose…

J: If you want to talk, just let me know, ok?
Nora sat for a long time just thinking about the last 24 hours… She called Renee

R: Hi honey, what can I help you with?

N: I need a dress

R: You have several, I thought you and Rachel

N: No, I need a great dress. A 'can't-get-that-grin-off-his-face-no-matter-how-hard-he-tries-dress'. But it has to cover this thing in my chest. I'm exhausted and I haven't shopped in Llanview in years… I don't even know where to go.

R: You stay right where you are and let me make some phone calls.
*******************************************************************.
Police Station

Bo spent most of the day re-arranging the furniture in his office so no one would be able to touch his stuff again! The switchboard phone rang… Officer Tim picked it up.

OT: Llanview PD… Mrs. Buchanan.. thank god... I mean, how are you today?

N: Tim, would you please do me a huge favor?

OT: Anything… I mean anything.. except... um…. you aren't going to dump him over the phone are you? 'Cause if you are, I would like to request on behalf of the entire law enforcement establishment of Llanview that you call him at home -preferably on a weekend… a long weekend.

N: No... But I'd like you to leave him a note… Can I send someone over? Don't tell Bo, just leave it on his desk when he isn't looking.

OT: Mrs. Buchanan. If , no, when, he finds out that you called and I didn't patch you through? He'll kill me.

N: Please… it's ok.. I'll put in a line that says ' don't kill officer Tim' How's that?

OT: All right… but please hurry.. we're having a pretty bad day at the office if you know what I mean.
**********************************************************************.
Bo found a strange envelope on his desk.

B: Tim!

OT: Sir

B: How the HELL did someone get in my office.. I thought I left strict instructions….

Bo turned over the envelope and noticed the handwriting.

B: Um... never mind

He closed the door and sat down in his chair braced for bad news. He found one piece of paper … "bring $1 in crisp new bills to the Palace roof top at 8pm tonight or you'll never see your computer alive again - no police" "p.s. stop picking on Officer Tim"

Bo sat back in his chair and heaved a huge sigh of relief. He picked up the intercom.

B: Tim?

OT: Yes sir

B: You didn't actually try to arrest the mayor did you?

OT: No sir

B: Thank you

OT: We haven't located your computer however, sir.

B: Who cares, I'll get another one... their stock is so low maybe they'll have a sale.

He thought 8 pm would never come

Nora's room

Nora had eaten the rather large snack Renee had sent up with the dresses and took her pills.

There were 10 dresses from various shops around town. She had declined any assistance and was poring over them. She tried all of them on before settling on one. It was deep blue, heavy silk with an intricate design woven into the fabric and incredibly soft to the touch. The skirt was full enough to allow her to move. The neckline was high across her shoulders, there was not much of a back.

She called the hair salon for an appointment and took a nap…

An alley outside of Llanview

RJ was waiting in the dark, behind a pile of boxes. He dialed Sykes.

S: Sykes

RJ: John, this is RJ Gannon

S: My old friend

R: Shut up Sykes. I'm going to give you an address. I'm meeting someone … It would be helpful if a representative of the local constabulary would show up. Now

S: RJ, what the hell

RJ: Here's the address. Hurry up

RJ hung up and waited..

Creep: Hey old buddy… I got your note

RJ: Took you long enough

Creep: Do you have the money?

He pulled out a duffle bag

RJ: Right here

The Palace rooftop
8:10 pm

Bo was pacing… He felt like an idiot all dressed up with no one there. He had on a tux with a one dollar bill folded neatly sticking out of his pocket. The door to the roof opened.

B: Nora?

Waiter: Good evening Mr. Buchanan

Two waiters came through the door. They had a small table and chairs, a bottle of cider (non-alcoholic) on ice with glasses, covered platters with dinner and two speakers. He could hear the band from downstairs.

At least she hadn't stood him up. About 10 minutes later Nora stuck her head around the door.

N (shyly): Hi

B: Hi

N: Sorry I'm late

B: I didn't even notice.

N: Joe called

B: Ouch!

N: Is it safe to assume you're still talking to me?

B: I'm not the one who stopped …

Nora stepped all the way through the doorway. Bo couldn't hide the grin on his face. He coughed into his hand to cover up the expression on his face.

B: Ma'am, do you have a license for that dress?

N: I was hoping you'd like it.

B: Mind if I take a closer look?

N: Not at all

Bo walked over to her, kissed her on the cheek and took her in his arms. She kissed him back.

B: Are you too tired to dance a little?

N: No

Bo held her close and they moved slowly around the rooftop. It was a beautiful night.

N: I'm sorry

B: I know we aren't fixed…but that doesn't mean we can't be.

Nora took the dollar from his pocket and put it inside her bodice.

B: Hey.. where's my computer?!

N: On your desk.

B: You took it?

N: No silly. But Tim filled me in on your day when I called

B: You called? I left strict instructions

N: Bo… I asked him to not tell you. He told me about how upset you were about losing your computer and how you wanted to arrest the mayor so I called someone in the mayor's office. It was supposed to be a practical joke for Halloween. It should be back on your desk in the morning if it isn't already. I promised Tim you wouldn't kill him.

B: I wasn't really that upset about losing my computer

N: You want me to give it back to the mayor?

B: No… I don't want to lose you

N: Bo

B: (He kissed her) Thank you for getting my computer back… I have a legal question though.

N: What?

B Does this mean I can't play a practical joke on him in return?

N: That sounds like official police business to me

B: Excellent

N: Were you really going to arrest the mayor?

B: See what you do to me? You turn me into an idiot!

N: I think I turn me into an idiot.

B: You're not an idiot.

They were quiet for a bit.

B: Hey, do you need to eat? Why don't we sit down.

N: I did promise Larry I would be careful.

They sat down and Bo poured the cider while Nora took the covers off their plates. Bo tried to not stare. Nora got up her nerve…

N: Bo… we spend so much time talking about me and how I feel

B: And looking for you when you run away

N: Bo… please. She started again….

N: I know I'm a bit of a mess

B: But

N: but you scare me.

B: How?

N: Sometimes I think I know what you want but we haven't really talked about what you want or what your expectations are or

B: You're afraid of my expectations?

N: We don't …

B: You were angry about how I reacted around Sam. I'm sorry. I guess it's easier for me to blame Sam than me for my own actions. I know I have to find a way to deal with him. Matthew should feel ok if he wants to see Sam. He's a friend of yours. I have to deal with him. More importantly, I have to deal with me and my problems and how I hurt you.

N: You think we should let Sam be with Matthew?

B: I think we should focus on us. Please look at me… I hurt you … and now you're afraid of me somehow. Can we talk about that?

N: ok

B: I was thinking last night… instead of sleeping… (Nora smiled)… you don't remember things… events…

N: Not a lot

B: But you remember how you felt. If something happened, if… when I hurt you… do you remember how that felt?

N (Quietly): Yes

B: Is that what you're reacting to? You just have all that fear… and the questions and the confusions… I broke every promise I ever made to you… it makes sense that you would be scared of trying to trust me.

Nora started to cry. She put her head down on the table for a minute.

N: It's just… I don't understand… I never understood why

B: Why what? Specifically…

N: Why I wasn't enough… why you left me …. Why won't you do it again?

B: What else

N: What do you want? Why don't you believe me? Why do you think I love Sam?

B: Anything else?

N: I think that's a start

Bo took her hand across the table and kissed it. He was afraid to speak, that he would say the wrong thing. He took a deep breath and smiled at her.

B: Was that last thing supposed to be past tense as well?

N: No

B: Why weren't you enough for me? You have always been more than enough for me…I think I took you for granted. I thought that you would let me make the decisions for us, that if I told you everything was ok that you would feel that way. Instead, it scared you more. When I look back on that time… it was a horrible thing. I couldn't bring Drew back and I pushed you away. The more you begged me to let you in, the more I withdrew. It was never you…

B: Why did I leave you? I left you because I was an incredibly stupid, petty little man. I hurt so bad I thought I wouldn't be able to breathe ever again and I took it out on you. I wanted to make you hurt as much as I did and that was the only thing I knew to do. It was a mistake of unbelievable magnitude… when I look back on it, I can't believe it. If it takes me a hundred years, I will work everyday to take that look out of your eyes.

B: How do you know I won't do it again? I guess you don't. Not really. I can see that when I look at you. But I can tell you…I am never going to leave you again… I am going to spend the rest of my life trying to figure out new and improved ways to make you feel like the most loved and desired woman in the history of the world. Until you know, in every fiber of your being how very much I love you. I will follow you to the ends of the earth until you trust me. I know I have to earn that trust.

B: Why do I think you love Sam? I guess if I'm being honest I would say that I have been afraid you loved Sam from the moment I knew about his existence. I know you don't love him the way you love me… cause he's a creep and I'm an incredibly great looking dancer. Sam can't dance and he dresses funny.

N (smiling despite herself): Please don't joke

B: I'm sorry. Sam isn't our problem. I am. I know that. But I would be lying to you if I said that I don't hate him, because I do. He touched you. He had the nerve to think that you could love someone besides me. He took my complacency and threw it back in my face. It's hard to forgive him but I know I have to do that. I don't know how, but I promise I will work as hard as I can to make sure that I don't take it out on you or Matthew ever again. It's my problem.

Bo pulled his chair around the table to be right next to her and took her hands again.

B: I screwed up… I made so many mistakes… I let my ego and my pride get in the way of everything. I gave you a hard time with Max's kids. Do you remember that?

N: No. I remember being scared you wouldn't forgive me… I have this picture of myself sitting in a chair in our house waiting for you to come home and you didn't for a really long time.

B: I blamed you for doing your job. I made you feel bad about not telling me about Max's kids being kidnapped. He tricked you into being his lawyer so you wouldn't tell me. I know how you feel about being a lawyer… how important it is to you. I was a complete and total jerk. Your creepy secretary tried to intervene.

N: Georgie? Was that her name?

B: Yeah…she was a psycho. But she played me like a violin… then she played you. And I still didn't learn my lesson.

N: What do you mean?

B: You stuck by me. You believed in me when everything and everyone else said differently. Even Hank thought I might be cheating on you.

N: Hank?

B: Oh yeah. He told me he'd never forgive me if I hurt you. But you stuck by me. I couldn't believe it but you did.

N: I loved you… I remember feeling so confused but the thought of losing you was more than I could handle. I have so much of that inside of me… confusion and questions and wanting you so badly

B: and I pushed you away. When you needed me the most I pushed you away.

Nora got up from the table and walked to the edge of the roof. Bo followed her and put his arms around her.

B: It does make sense to me that you're scared. I'm not sure what to do or what to say to make it better or easier for you but I know that I'm the one that screwed up. I know that. And I'm ashamed of it. (Pause) You asked me what I want?

N: Yes

B: I want you to run to me. Not Andrew or Selma or Rachel or Joe - especially not Joe. It's not going to be easy for us to build a life together again but I want to. I want you to talk to me. I want to stop feeling jealous because you spend time with Hank in the park. I know you need to talk to him about Rachel so it's unreasonable of me but I'm jealous of everyone… Yesterday, when I was talking to Andrew… I wanted to deck him. Why does he know how you feel? Why can't I keep it together long enough to help you with this? Why can't I stop blaming Sam for my screw-ups?

Pause

B: I don't mean to say that I am in anyway asking you to change who you're talking to or why or anything. You do what you need to do. I just want to be the one you turn to. I want to be the one you trust and lean on and… I have to earn that.

Neither of them spoke for several minutes.

N: Andrew thinks maybe we should try counseling

B: Together?

N: yes

B: What do you think?

N: I'd like to try it

B: Tell me where and when

N (quietly): Thank you

B: So… Would you dance with me?
*********************************************************.
They had been dancing for what seemed like hours, Bo could feel her getting tired.

B: Are you warm enough? That dress

N: You don't like it?

B: Um… that wasn't exactly my first thought

N: What was

B (Smiling): It looks like I could get you out of it pretty easily… Hey why don't we sit for a bit

N: Those chairs are a little small for two

B: I think there's a ledge over there we can both fit on quite comfortably

Bo took one of the cushions from the chairs for a pillow and took his jacket off to cover Nora. They lay down together and just listened to the sounds of the town late at night.

N: It's so peaceful up here

B: yeah… I have a friend who likes to spend time up here. Every once in a while I get a call to come arrest him.

N Renee?

B: No, usually when she's gone. He would never hurt anyone. So we sit and talk and I tell him I have to tell him that he's trespassing and he thanks me for not arresting him. Then he gives me advice which is always right but I never seem to listen.

N: Like what

B: He didn't think I should leave you… said it didn't sound like you really were in love with Sam. He's big on not letting your pride get in the way of your heart.

N: I think I would like him

B: I think he would like you.

N: So…is that the first thing you notice about a woman's clothes? How fast you could get her out of them?

B: Yup… That's the first thing I think about your clothes, anyway… That and… gee, doesn't look like she's got much on under there (he slid his hands down her hip and into the back of her dress.) Nope… not much under there… Besides, that dress isn't exactly a sweat suit for god's sake… what did you want me to say… wow… isn't that hemline brilliant!… look at the detail of the stitching on the bodice … oh my… it's just amazing!

They both laughed… Bo ran his fingers along the neckline… His hands moving slowly across her chest, massaging her breasts through the material

B: I like the detail though… right here on the front… the stitching …it's exquisite (rubbing her nipples)… You know, I can't decide whether I like your dresses cut low in the front or low in the back… this high neckline is nice… kinda' highlights certain areas…

Nora had unbuttoned most of Bo's shirt and was caressing his chest… She found the condom in his shirt pocket…

N: You are such a boy scout!

B: Let's just say I had high hopes… Is that a complaint?

N: No.

B: That's good… there are some things one never wants to be unprepared for…. You're one of them.

N: You're amazing. The way you always look out for me, make sure everything's taken care of. I know I've been a bit of an idiot but I do love you. I do want us to be together

B: That's all that matters.

N: So, tell me what you want.

B: You need to ask?

N: Yes… this can't be just about me and I don't want to take you or us for granted.

B: I want us to be together for the rest of our lives… right now, I want to hold you and try and let you know how much I want you. How much I missed you last night… I want to make you feel so good that when you get scared there's a part of you that always knows that I'm right here and it'll be ok. We'll be ok.

Nora un-zipped his pants and reached up to kiss him… one thing lead to another and Bo pulled her up on top of him and sat them both up.

B: I was right, you know…

N: About what?

B: How easy this dress'll come off….

He slid his hands up her back and hooked his fingers under the straps, pulling it down in front. Then he reached behind her and unzipped the rest… He pulled her closer with one hand, the other cupping her right breast and kissed her passionately

N (watching the dollar she had slipped down her bodice fly away): Hey, there goes my dollar

B: I'll give you another one

N: You better

B: Yup… no time at all. No wrinkles, no tears … You know, one of my favorite things about you is you'll take your clothes off anywhere!

N: You have always been good with your hands…Shut up and kiss me

Nora shifted so she could pull his pants off. She shivered in the night breeze. Bo pulled her close caressing her all over.

B: Are you warm enough?

N: I was hoping you could help me with that

B: I will do my best
***************************.
The roof top
4 am

Nora and Bo were asleep on the ledge with nothing but Bo's jacket over them. Officer Tim ran up the last steps to the roof and peered out looking for the Commissioner. The table was still there, the band had long since packed up so there was nothing but static coming from the speakers. He crept out onto the roof looking for Bo.

Tim heard a sound and turned as Bo stirred.

OT (to himself): Damn, can't these two ever use a bed?

He didn't want to make Nora any more uncomfortable than she was going to be so he walked back to the stairs and knocked as loudly as he could.

OT: Commissioner! Commissioner Buchanan

Bo opened his eyes with a start and checked his watch… He hadn't meant to keep Nora outside so long in this cool air, Larry was going to kill him!

OT: Commissioner

Nora woke up

N: Bo?

OT: Commissioner!

B: What!

Bo reached for Nora's dress and had it over her head and zipped up in a flash. He put her into his jacket and grabbed his pants.

OT: Sir, Mr. Gannon sent me to find you.

N: Hank? Oh god.. Rachel

OT: No ma'am.

Bo came out buttoning his shirt.

B: What is it? It's the middle of the night for god's sake.

OT: Your cell phone must have been off Sir.

B: Well, I was busy.

OT: Yes sir. We should get back to the hospital

Nora followed Bo out from behind the ledge.

N: Who has been hurt?

OT: John Sykes and RJ Gannon

N: Damn him. What was RJ doing now?

B: Let's just get over there and see what's going on. Hank knew I didn't want to be
disturbed so it must be important. Tim, please take Mrs. Buchanan back

N: No Bo. I'm going with you

B: Nora, you need to be in bed

N: I am going with you.

Nora took off past Officer Tim and down the stairs. When the other two got down stairs and outside she was sitting in the front of Bo's car trying to fix her hair and make up in the rear view mirror. He climbed in.

B: You're beautiful.

N: I'm a mess

B: You're beautiful.
**************************************.
Hospital

Rae is pacing up and down the corridor, paralyzed with fear. Hank, Lisa and Rachel are sitting in chairs outside the emergency dept. Bo and Nora pulled up at the same time as Selma and Len. Bo strode up to Hank

B: What happened?

H: Both John and RJ were shot. RJ was beaten pretty bad as well. They're both in surgery right now.

N: Rachel, honey, are you ok?

B: What the hell were they doing? John didn't tell me anything about a case he was working on about RJ

Rae: I don't think RJ told him anything. He called John apparently, but at the last minute when he was sure he had the guys

B: What guys?

H: The drug dealers who sold him the drug Lindsay gave to Nora

N: Oh my god.

H: The FBI and the DEA are crawling all over the place. It seems they have been trying to flush these guys out for a couple of years.

Selma: How did RJ do it?

Rae: He wanted Rachel to look him in the eye again. He was determined to find these guys again.

N: How are they?

Rae: John was shot twice, RJ once in the neck. I guess they missed his head. They're both in pretty bad shape
**********************************************.
Outside OR - 6:30 am

Nora was asleep on the chairs with her head in Selma's lap, Hank and Bo were conferencing with the DEA and FBI agents. They wanted to interrogate RJ as soon as he woke. Len took Rachel for coffee, Rae was still staring off into space, trying not to lose it. Finally Larry came out of the OR to talk to them.

L: Hi Hank

H: How bad is it?

L: RJ has a serious head injury but he should recover. The bullet caused very little damage.

Rae: When can we see him?

L: In a couple of hours he should be out of recovery. If you would like to go home and get some sleep I can call you when he wakes

Rae: I'm staying right here.

B: How's John?

L: We got both bullets out, there was no damage to any of his internal organs. He should recover as well.

B: The FBI and DEA want to talk to both of them.

L: Not until this afternoon at the earliest.

Larry took one look at Nora and scowled.

N: What?

L: You should be at home resting… are you at Bo's or the Palace?

N: Um
