Down the road... part 16

Last time…
N: Bo... what is it?
B: Stay where you are
N: Bo
B: Ssshhhh… someone’s been here
N: What do you mean? We had a whole bunch of people here
B: Someone has gone through the house... looking for something
N: Like what?
B: I don’t know… stay here
***********************************************************************.
N: Don’t you dare go in there

B: I have to

N: Where’s your phone?

B: In my pants… back in a sand dune somewhere

N: Oh

B: Look, you stay here

N: No

B: Yes

N: No

B: Damn you. Stay here… I’m just going to the phone.. there’s not much I can do naked

N: Please don’t do anything stupid. Matthew needs one of us

Bo whipped his head around and looked at her.

B: Don’t you even think about that. Matthew is going to have both of us for a very long time. Now stay here.

Bo moved quietly into the house and grabbed the phone and a towel. He pulled it out onto the porch with him and called the police.

B: Ok, let’s get away from here… we can wait for the uniforms at the top of the driveway.
*******************************************************************.
The station
Officer Tim put down the phone

OT: Ok, listen up. I need two cruisers over to the commissioner’s house. Search it inside and out and stay there. Joe, Tom over to RJ Gannon’s room and stay there. Mike and Elizabeth... over to the Palace and check on the Hanen’s and make sure Matthew is ok. Anything at all, I want to hear about it. Two more come with me. And um.. Sophia…

S: Yes?

OT: Grab the commissioner’s gym bag out of his office.

S: Don’t you want me to stay here?

OT: No, he specifically asked me to bring a female officer with me. Let’s go
*********************************************************************.
The beach house

The first cruiser moved silently up the road and stopped in front of Bo.

Officer Tim looked at Sophia

OT: Not a word

S: Oh my god, they’re both naked!

Bo grabbed the gym bag from Sophia and pulled out a clean tee shirt and sweats and handed them to Nora.

N: Bo

B: Yeah?

N: Here, you can wear the sweat pants. I’m ok with the tee shirt

B: You need to keep warm. Put it on and don’t argue with me

B: Sophia? Officer Pelegrino?

S: Yes sir

B: Take Mrs. Buchanan back to the cruiser and make sure she’s warm enough.

S: Yes sir

Bo and Officer Tim moved toward the house with the other officers and checked the place out. As soon as they were sure no one was left, Bo relaxed and went back to the car just as Hank pulled up.

H: What the hell happened? They’re cops all over the hospital? Where’s Nora?

B: She’s ok but someone turned the beach house inside and out looking for something or someone

H: What?

B: I don’t know. Look. I need to take Nora home... we need to talk and I want to make sure she’s ok.

H: What happened?

B: Oh we were … you know

H: Yeah, I kind figured… neither of you have much on

B: When we got out of the water and came up on the deck I noticed something and tried to get her to stay back

H: Oh yeah… ‘cause that works

B: She said something that threw me

H: What?

B: She said that I had to be careful because Matthew needed one of us

H: Wait a minute… I thought Larry didn’t know anything yet

B: That’s what I thought… I just need to go

H: Don’t worry about it… I’ll keep an eye on things here and check back with you later

B: Great, thanks

Bo walked over to the cruiser and slipped in the back seat with Nora. Sophia got out and stood away from the car

B: So, you warm enough?

N: Yeah.. what’s happening?

B: Not sure. We’ve got cruisers at the house, the Palace and the hospital. No one has been at the house… Would you like to go back there or back to the Palace?

Nora was trying to hold back the tears.

N: Um.. what do you think?

B: Why don’t we go back to the palace and we can check on Matthew.

N (shakily): Ok… um…. Do you think he’s still awake?

B: No, but Len and Selma are. Asa and Len will probably be in the lobby when we get there. You still have clothes there right?

N: yeah. I kinda’ like your tee shirt though

B: You know the Llanview PD – Always in fashion! Let’s get back. We can warm up and get some food. Hopefully we’ll know more in a little while.

N: Bo... do you think RJ is ok?

B: So far, he’s fine. But no one has been over there and he is still resting quietly. Hank sent Rachel over to the Palace to stay with your folks. Why don’t we head over there.

N: Ok

B: You ok?

N: I’m ok… can we go now?

Bo called Sophia back to the car and she drove them back to the Palace. Len, Selma, Rachel, and Asa met them in the lobby. Renee had stayed upstairs with Matthew.

Selma grabbed Nora and wrapped her in a coat and held her for a long time before passing her over to Rachel. Len shepherded them inside and gave Bo his jacket.

B: Hey, thanks… look, Nora’s pretty shook up but I think she could use something to eat and a chance to settle a bit.

L: Why don’t the two of you go upstairs, Asa and I can order something and have it sent up and we can all talk about what happened.

B: Ok.. thanks

L: Bo?

B: What

L: You ok?

Bo paused

B: No… If anything had happened to Nora

L: It’s ok… I understand. You’re both fine and that’s all that matters

B: No it isn’t. I need to find out what that was about. Until I do none of us will sleep easy. Nora can’t handle anything more than she has on her plate right now.

L: The two of you have a big family to help you out. Don’t forget that.

B: Thanks

Selma walked up to Bo and Len

S: I’m taking Nora upstairs… anyone else coming?
****************************************************************.
Len and Selma’s suite

Nora checked on Matthew then came back out. Selma had some clothes for her to put on.

S: Honey

N: Yeah?

S: Are you ok? You look kinda’ shaky

Nora started to cry

S: Ssshhhhh…. It’s ok to be scared… we all are!

N: Momma… what if something had happened to Bo… I can’t

S: Bo is fine and so are you

N: But he wanted to rush in there and I got so scared

S: Of what honey?

Nora looked up at her mom, eyes brimming with tears…

S: Go ahead.

N: All of a sudden… I got so scared…. Matthew needs one of us… if Bo

Selma walked over to her and hugged her.

S: Ssshhhh… Have you heard anything from Larry?

N: No, it’s not that… I just….

Len, Asa, Bo and Rachel walked in. Nora rushed over to Bo and hugged him.

B: Hey… I’m ok. We’re both ok.

There was a knock on the door and Renee opened it and let the waiter in.

B: Why don’t we eat something and calm down.

N: I didn’t realize how hungry I was!

Bo got on the phone and checked in on RJ and the house. There was another knock and Renee opened the door to Hank. Bo brought everyone up to date. They agreed to talk in the morning and Len ushered everyone out. Nora didn’t want to stay in her suite

L: Why don’t you two stay in there with us? We can pull out the couch out in the other room and put Matthew on that. You guys can have the bed.

B: Sounds good to me.

Len tucked Matthew into the sofa bed and left Bo and Nora alone. Nora straightened out the bed and they climbed in and held each other. Neither of them slept.

B: Hey… since we’re both awake… can we talk?

N: Yeah, sure. About what?

B: Something you said tonight..

N: About Matthew needing one of us?

B: Yeah… Did you hear something from Larry?

N: No.. it’s just… Was I afraid of your job before?

B: Some, sure…. Is this the first time you’ve thought about that?

N: It just doesn’t seem real… but tonight…. What if I don’t make it? Matthew needs one of us Bo…

B: Hey… first of all… one day at a time, remember? He’s got two parents and he’s damn lucky to have you as a mom. He’s gonna have you for a long time. Can I ask you something else?

N: Ok

B: Were you thinking about asking me to not be a cop? I mean…

N: Well… I wouldn’t ask you to do that.

B: If you think we should talk about it, then we will. I promise. If you don’t get better and we have to talk about that kind of thing… I promise, we’ll work out something.

N: But you love your job.

B: No. I really really really LIKE my job. I learned a long time ago that there’s a huge difference. I let you go once… I lost you once… no more. Our family is number one… I promise. What ever happens, we’re facing it together.

N: I’m sorry for being so scared.

B: Don’t be… I was pretty freaked myself. If any one had come anywhere near you I would’ve killed them with my bare hands…

Nora giggled

N: That’s pretty much all you had!

They both laughed.
*******************************************************************.
The three of them went back to the house the next morning and settled in. Nora didn’t object to having uniformed officers outside. They dressed and sent Matthew off to school. Bo headed to the station and agreed to meet her at Andrew’s that afternoon for their session.
*****************************************************************.
The station
That morning

There was a knock on his door… Bo answered… It was Joey

J: Hi, Uncle Bo. Sorry to not call first

B: Hey, no problem… what’s up?

J: We heard about last night.. everyone ok?

B: Yeah… thanks

J: well, I wanted to ask you about something

B: Have a seat…

J: So how’s Nora?

B (Smiling): Fine

J: Any news on whether the chemo is working?

B: Joey… what’s wrong?

J: Nothing…I guess I’m a little nervous here

B: No need to be

J: Uncle Bo.. how did you know you were ready to be a father?

B: Um… well… I’m not sure I am

J: Well..

B: Joe… having a child is the biggest thing that’ll ever happen to you. There’s no test… you can’t study up… What are you thinking?

J: Well, Nigel and I have been thinking… we both have loved being with Matthew… at first we thought all the baby sitting would be a little old…

B: Oh

J: No, I mean… we were happy to do it… not much else we could actually do… but… it’s been really great. I’ve known I was gay for about forever. I guess I never really thought I would have kids.

B: And now?

J: I want one…. More than one.. So does Nigel

B: Well, then. Have you talked to Clint?

J: No, dad and Dallas are due this weekend… I was going to talk to him this then… Uncle Bo?

B: Yeah

J: Do you think we’re crazy?

B: No I don’t. Matthew is such an incredible joy… I missed out with Drew… having this second chance has meant so much…

J: I’m just afraid if I tell Gran pa he’ll go and buy a kid somewhere

B: Well, you’re right about that! You thinking of adopting or finding a surrogate?

J: No… adopting I guess. I was going to ask Nora if she would help us

B: You know she will

J: Is she up to it? I mean..

B: It’s ok. We don’t know anymore but I know Nora would love to help you if she can.

J: Don’t say anything, ok? I’d like to ask her.

B: Sure thing

Bo saw Joey out and wandered over to Tim’s desk…

B: So… Tim… what do you do for Halloween in your household?

OT: Sir?

B: You know.. Halloween? You haven’t forgotten it’s Halloween, have you?

OT: Oh no sir… Not at all sir.. as a matter of fact..

B: That’s ok.. I was just checking… you do know my nephew works at the Banner, right? He’ll be here later if you needed to um…. Well, you know

OT: Yes sir… I know…

Bo smiled

B: Excellent

Hank strode up

H: What’s excellent

Bo and Tim at same time: Nothing

Tim ducked out

H: What are you up to?

B: Oh nothing… we were just talking about Matthew’s Halloween costume…

H: you are a very bad liar…

B: So what are you going as?

H: Going where?

B: Andrew is having a Halloween party at the Community center… middle of the week thing…. what are you going as? You and Lisa are going aren’t you? You could go as a pillar of the community

H: Funny

B: Rachel asked if she could take Matthew… if Nora is feeling up to it, we’re gonna’ go too. It should be fun

H: Yeah, it’s been awhile since you two went out and had some fun

B: well, we do manage to not go out and still have fun

Hank laughed..

B: Well then..

H: Whatever it is you weren’t talking about… I hope it doesn’t involve getting back at the mayor

B: Hank… I have way too much on my plate right now

H: You?

B: Nora would kill me…

H: Whatever… just don’t get my daughter in trouble too… and don’t expect me to get you an emergency bail
hearing

B: Hey… you got the punk from the mayor’s office one… why not your best friend?

H: I thought my best friend wouldn’t need one

Rachel walked up

R: Need what dad?

H: Nothing

B: Your father thinks I’m going to get in trouble

R: Mom’ll kill you

B: My point exactly…

Bo kissed Rachel

B: See ya

He headed over to Andrew’s

********************************************************.
The parsonage
Late morning

A: So.. how are we doing? Fine? Great…. You know… I wanted to throw something out there

N: Uh oh

A: Have you two talked about what happened? When you split up?

Nora got very uncomfortable, very fast…

A: I know Nora, you might not remember a lot

N: I’m fine.

Nora got up and began to pace. Bo and Andrew watched her

B: Well, we haven’t really talked about it

N: I’m fine

A: Nora…. Honey… it’s ok.. we can talk about something else

N: I said I’m fine.

B: We haven’t really talked about that… I was a bit of a jerk

Nora whipped around

N: a bit?

B: um

A: Nora?

N: Sorry…

A: Nora… I really think we should

Nora got up and walked out. She sat in the car and waited for Bo.

Andrew looked at Bo

B: It‘s ok. I think maybe we should focus on now… today… for awhile…

A: I guess you’re right…see you next week.

Andrew walked Bo out. He knocked on the car window, Nora rolled down the window.

A: Honey I’m sorry…. Please come back next week, ok?

Nora kissed him goodbye and they left
**************************************************************.
Bo’s house that night
Bo finished building a fire as Nora came down stairs trying not to think about chemotherapy the next day. They lay down on the couch together.

B: Hey… can I ask you about this morning?

N: You mean at Andrew’s?

B: Yes

N: Please don’t

B: You ok?

N: I’m fine…

Pause

N: Larry says I’ll probably have to stay overnight at the hospital again

B: I’ll be there… Maybe I can talk him into letting me bring you home

N: I’d like that

B: You sure you’re ok?

N: Bo, please don’t

************************************************************.

Bo took Nora into the hospital the next morning and stayed with her until the nurses threw him out. He kissed her and promised to be back as soon as Larry called. She waited for him to go, then pulled out a legal pad and began to write

*************************************************************.
The Palace
Clint and Dallas’s room
There was a knock on the door

J: Hey Dad

C: Joey… come on over here and give me a hug!

Clint grabbed Joey and slapped him on the back – guy style… Then held him back and looked at him hard

C: Ok.. what is it?

J: Nothing

C: Is your mother ok?

J: Dad… mom’s fine

C: Spit it out son

J: Dad… I’m fine

C: Is Nigel ok?

J: Yes

C: Nora? Oh god.. where’s Bo?

J: Dad… everyone is fine

C: Joey… I’ve seen that face before… it’s your ’lying eyes’ as your mother calls it

J: Oh great... thanks! Geez dad

C: I am just trying to let you know that I know something’s up. You can talk to me

J: Ok… look… Nigel and I want to have a kid

C: And you are going to accomplish this how?

J: Dad

C: Ok… sorry. This is a bit of a surprise, that’s all. I thought that… well… you know…

J: You thought your grand kids would have to come from Jess and Kevin

C: Well, yes

J: It’s ok… So did I. But something changed

C: What?

J: I guess I just let myself think about it, that’s all. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much I’d really like a family. I want to create my own family.

C: How does Nigel feel?

J: Same… we’ve been spending a lot of time with Matthew and each time it gets harder to let go of him.. to give him back. We’ve talked about it and we’re going to ask Nora if she’ll help us

C: You want Nora to have… to be your surrogate?

J: No..no.. Dad.. to help us adopt

C: Oh, ok.. For a minute there I thought

J: Calm down dad…

C: Ok.. hey, what does your mother say?

J: I haven’t had a chance yet so please don’t say anything, ok? We haven’t told anyone yet… Especially grand pa

C: Yeah.. Asa’ll go buy one somewhere…

J: Yeah…not what we were looking for…

C: What about Kevin and Jessica?

J: Not yet… I guess I just wanted to talk to you first… well, I did ask Bo if he thought Nora could handle it…

C: Ok…look I’m meeting Bo for lunch… have you seen her? Nora I mean?

J: Yeah… she seems to be holding up.

C: Any news?

J: No.. but Dad?

C: Yeah?

J: There’s a lot she doesn’t remember still and sometimes she can get upset and you have no clue why…

C: Ok.. thanks. How’s Bo? I mean… we talk a lot on the phone but how is he?

J: I think he’s ok under the circumstances. He seems to have made up his mind and has just kinda’ stepped in to try and make them a family. But he’s scared sh*tless of the cancer though….

C: How does Nora react to that?

J: Ok, it seems. I mean she’s staying there and stuff… but she’s still a little tentative about being here I think.

C: Well she’s got a lot to deal with… it’s our job to be as easy as we can on her

J: I know…

C: You sure you don’t wanna join us for lunch?

J: Nope… I should probably go talk to mom

C: That’s true… your mom’s gonna be thrilled…

J: I hope so…

****************************************************************.
The station
Noonish…

A courier walked into the station looking for Bo. Officer Tim took the letter and noticed the hand writing… he took it straight into Bo’s office. Bo tore open the note and began to read….
"Bo,
I’m sorry I chickened out at Andrew’s and with you last night… I was up most of the night trying to calm down
enough to explain this to you…maybe it’s not so coherent but it’s the best I can come up with …

It’s not that I don’t trust you.. I don’t think it is anyway… I’m probably more afraid to trust myself… but I’m not sure I can handle you asking me to go back to that place… it’s too dark….there’s so much anger and rage and confusion and the only thing I know to do is to crawl up into a ball and hide… I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to go back there again…. I know that all that happened still stands between us but I’m too afraid. I’m sorry

Bo sat back in his chair… he was suddenly very glad to be meeting Clint for lunch – he needed to talk to someone
*******************************************************************.
Nora’s hospital room

Sam walked up and peered into Nora’s room… she was alone… He slipped in.

S: Nora

N (surprised): Sam?

S: Hi… can I talk to you?

N: Um… well… I guess so

S: .. how are you?

N: Fine… I’m getting chemotherapy Sam... what do you think?

S: I’m sorry, it’s just..

N: You want to know what I remember about you… um you and… um… us

S: Yes.. I’ve loved you forever and

N: I thought you and Melanie

S: Yes, but that’s not the point

N: Well, actually I think it is a pretty big point

Nora caught herself hoping someone would come in and interrupt. Suddenly she was disgusted with herself. She
decided to tell Sam the truth and have it done with.

N: Sam… I have some things to say to you and I would appreciate it if you would just
let me say them..

S: All right

N: First of all… I’m not really sure where to start so I’ll just jump in…

S: ok

N: I guess I should start…. Um… I think I’ll divide this into two sections… what I remember and what I think…

S (not sure he was gonna like this): Ok

N: Look Sam… I know you have this idea that you have loved me for 20 years…and I can’t really speak to that… I can only tell you what I remember… I don’t remember a lot of things or events.. I remember feelings

S: That’s ok… surely you remember I love you… just as much as Bo

N: But you asked me about what I remember about what I felt..

S: that’s true

N: Sam… I remember feeling grateful that you didn’t walk out on me when I was pregnant…. I remember that when I wanted Bo, you went and tried to talk him into taking me back… I remember being in court with Bo and all I could think about was touching him and realizing that I couldn’t and you were there… I looked at you and promised myself that I would try harder to love you… she paused and looked him square in the eye

N: I remember being in bed with you and trying so hard… so hard to not want Bo… I remember looking at you when you asked me to marry you and thinking that maybe it’s better to be with someone you don’t love so they can’t hurt you… Sam… I am done with allowing you to pretend that there was some incredibly decades-long love story going on…. You were married to Lindsay and made her feel 2nd best… for what? and now you are with Melanie and chasing after me…. For what?

S: Nora

N: No Sam. Get out of here… go find Melanie and make her feel like the most important woman alive on the
planet… You and I never were… I don’t know a lot of things.. I don’t remember a lot of things… but I know how I felt and what I wanted and how much it hurt to not have it. I don’t know if Bo and I can make it… but I do know that you need to move on in some way other than toward me. I never loved you and I don’t love you now… I don’t know if Melanie does but I do know that she deserves better than this…

Sam was so stunned he just sat without saying a word. Finally Nora broke the silence

N: Sam I think you should go

***********************************************************************.
On the way to the palace, Bo called Clint and postponed lunch. He turned the car around and headed towards
Andrew’s
***********************************************************************.
The parsonage
Later that afternoon
Bo was waiting for Andrew, pacing around the room

A: Hi Bo… how are you?

B: Going crazy… I don’t understand what happened here yesterday and when I tried to get Nora to talk about it last night, she flat out refused… what’s going on?

A: She’s scared

B: Of what!

A: What do you think?

B: Andrew don’t pull that crap with me… I need help here not a psych 101 lesson.

A: All right… I have been thinking a lot about Nora’s reaction yesterday… at first it worried me but now I’m not so sure

B: Why the hell not?

A: Well, first of all she went from running back to Chicago to running out to the car and waiting for you

B: I guess that’s something

A: That’s a lot Bo. She’s trying…remember that. The two of you are in completely different places

B: I know… I keep telling myself to slow down, calm down, relax.

A: Bo, whatever she’s feeling… she is beginning to express it…

B (sarcastically): Oh, so that’s what that was

A (exasperated): Bo… do you have any idea how hard it has been for Nora to come back here… to just move in with you because she knows she needs help… because she wants to be with Matthew? Do you know how hard it is for her that you make so many assumptions about the two of you? Do you have any idea? You’ve got to slow down!

B (taken aback): I’m sorry… I didn’t… she only moved in with me to be with Matthew?

A: Not entirely, but you know that was part of it… you know she’s dealing with choices she wouldn’t ordinarily have to face.

B: I don’t want to make it worse for her

A: I know… but freaking out isn’t helping her. How is she supposed to feel safe about talking with you when you have already decided that what happened between the two of you… what happened to her… is over and you should just move on? Obviously, there is something there that she’s having a hard time with. If you can’t help her with it, who can?

Pause

A: You were very clear that you wanted to be the person she comes to… what happens when she does?

B: She didn’t come to me… she came to you

A: You can’t ask her to turn to you, then get mad when her response isn’t what you want. I realize you were hoping for a little more verbal communication but maybe what she needs right now is space to let some of this out… maybe the best thing you can do for her right now is provide some comfort. Try not pushing… let her know you’re there… let her know that you are safe for her…

Long pause

Andrew looked at Bo

B: What?

A: She ran out of this room yesterday.

B: I know, I was there, remember?

A: There were only 2 other people in this room.

B: Your point?

A: She and I have talked about this

Bo’s head shot up

B: and she doesn’t run away from you… You know what she’s afraid of? Why she won’t talk to me? Damn!

A: Bo, you know we have been working together for awhile.

B: All right... message received… I’m a jerk. Fine... haven’t we already established that? Over and over and over again!

A: I’m not trying to call you names or make accusations. You asked me to help you with this. I am just trying to paint a picture for you that is slightly different from the one in your head. I know you love her. So does she.

B: You sure about that?

A: Yes I am. Now look. When you asked her to come back here… when you and Hank and Renee and everyone else in town told her that she would have the support she needed to deal with all of this… did it ever occur to you that she might actually need that support?

B: I suppose not

A: Are you under the impression that all the time she was in Chicago she was dealing with what happened to her?

B: I guess I did think that…. I mean, I know she said that she was hiding.

A: Exactly. Now you want her to come out from hiding… that’s not an easy thing.

B: I don’t want to chase her back to Chicago… I really don’t

A: I know that.

B: So you think I should just slow down?

A: I do

B: and not push her at all about this?

A: I do…

Pause

A: Bo… it sounds to me like you are reacting somehow to the fact that she won’t talk to you about something… much more than the subject matter

B: I think that’s true… you know, no matter what was going on… as long as we talked about it, we were ok. That’s when things fell apart, when I refused to talk to her.

A: So Nora isn’t the only one afraid here?

B: Not by a long shot

A: So, tell her that too.

Andrew looked at his watch…

A: I have another appointment but please call me if I can help in any way.

B: Well, she’s in the hospital today

A: I know… I’ll stop by this evening.

Bo left and went back to the station, deep in thought. He tied up some things there and headed over to the hospital
************************************************************************
Nora’s hospital room
Late

Nora was dozing but not asleep. She opened her eyes when Bo kissed her

N: Hi

B: Hi.. how are you feeling?

N: marginal

B (Smiling): Well, I guess that’s better than ‘awful’

N: Just… I had a visitor today

B: Oh? Anyone I know?

N: Sam

B: Oh… what did he want?

N: He wanted me to tell him that I remember loving him

B: And?

N: I was unable to tell him that… I don’t think he was happy

B: Are you?

N: Yes… it was good to let him have it. I sent him back to Melanie… I’m tired of hearing it…

B (smiling): I’m crushed

N: Liar

They both laughed… Bo cleared his throat..

B: About yesterday….I know you don’t want to talk about this right now and I don’t want to push you

N: But…

B: Can I just say something?

N(tentatively): Sure

B: It’s just… I don’t want to push you into something you aren’t comfortable with… I know I get a little crazy about all of this sometimes… I’m scared too I guess

N: Why?

B: You know, we could always talk about anything… no matter what… and when I shut down… you begged me to talk to you and I just wouldn’t… I think that’s when things fell apart… I don’t want that… but I don’t want to scare you either… I’m sorry

Nora didn’t say anything for a long time…

N: Do you mind holding me?

B: Oh gee… let me think

He hopped into bed, she let herself relax into him… neither of them said anything for several minutes

N: It’s just too much right now… I don’t know, maybe I need you too much to face losing you again

B: You won’t lose me ever again.

N: I know you keep saying that but it’s still too much… whenever I think about that time, it’s like I can’t breathe… I can’t see my way and

B: Don’t… it’s ok. We have the rest of our lives. Maybe it’ll be easier down the road, when we’ve both had more time to be together and to work on re-building our lives. We don’t need to do everything all at once…

N: Thank you

The Station
Next morning

Tim walked in quickly with an armload of something. Sophia opened his bottom desk drawer and he dumped the contents into the drawer. She slammed it shut, then they both looked around to see if anyone spotted them. There was no one around. Tim picked up the phone and dialed the Banner.

OT: Kevin Buchanan please

Several days later
The Community Center

Bo dressed up as a biker – he had stopped shaving for a couple of days so he looked appropriately scruffy and he was decked out in leather from head to toe with a Harley shirt on under his jacket. Nora went as a witch with a long, torn black dress and a fake nose and some make up to cover up her pale skin. Matthew had painted a cat on the front of her skirt and bought her a big ugly necklace to wear with his allowance. It was warm enough for them to take the motorcycle.

Rachel had wanted to chaperone Matthew around and show him how to play the games and bob for apples. That left Bo and Nora room to mingle and relax a little. Nora was enjoying being out with people again... Bo noticed she seemed to have a little more energy than normal… Hank had taken Bo’s suggestion and dressed up as a Greek column with a sign on his chest that read "Pillar of the community"… Lisa was dressed as a prostitute. Matthew went as Darth Mol. Rachel was dressed as a lady bug. Len and Selma dressed up and Raggedy Ann and Andy. They looked a little ridiculous and Asa was having a blast making fun of Len.

Matthew was the one to smash the Halloween piñata and the prize was a big, ugly plastic pin. He ran over to Nora.

M: Look Mommy… now you have a witch pin to match your necklace!

N: Well, thank you sweetie… did you win that all by yourself?

M: Well… Rachel told me where to swing… can I put the pin on you?

Matthew grabbed for Nora’s dress up where the catheter was and Bo caught his hand just in time

B: Whoa, big guy… why don’t you let me do that, ok?

M: Ok Daddy… but don’t stick mommy!

B: I promise.

Bo pinned it on and gave her a long kiss… Matthew and Rachel went back to the games…

N: Hey… what does a girl have to do to get a ride on that bike of yours?

Bo grinned

B: Oh gee… I don’t know…

Nora kissed him

B: I’m sure you can do better than that

She kissed him again

B: I KNOW you can do better than THAT

She put her arms around his neck, pressed up against him and gave him a big kiss

B: Well… that might be worth a ride… on my bike I mean…

N: That’ll do for now…

She wiped the lipstick off his mouth…

Just then Selma and Renee walked up… they could hear Len and Asa arguing about baseball a couple of paces
behind them (Yankees are far superior… the Mets are younger and meaner!… what do you know, you’re from
Chicago!)

B (under his breath): damn

Selma grabbed Nora’s arm and took her to sit down, Bo followed and sat down next to Nora. Selma wanted to talk about redecorating their house…Bo groaned.

Nora listened intently to her mother all the while slowly sliding her hand under their table and toward Bo. She scooted close to him and started caressing him behind his knee… slowly her hand moved up his leg.

N: Oh yes.. that’s a great idea mom…

S: You think so, honey?

As her hand stroked Bo’s thigh, he shifted and tried to look nonchalant. Her hand moved up his thigh and stopped at his penis. Rubbing him firmly but slowly…

N: Mom… I think maybe you should try this… she drew a picture on her cocktail napkin pulling her hand away to steady the napkin. Bo caught himself reaching for her hand just in time. Nora finished with the napkin and looked at her mother for a reaction. Her hand went back to Bo’s crotch… he closed his eyes for a moment intent on what she was doing…

S: Bo? Are you ok?

Bo opened his eyes with a start

B: Oh yeah.. fine

Nora smiled.

S: Are you sure? I’m not holding you two up am I?

B: Oh no… really, I’m fine. You know, I like your living room the way it is, though…

Nora grabbed his hand and slid it under her dress. She didn’t have any underwear on.

Finally Bo couldn’t stand it anymore

B: You know Selma... now that you mention it... I do have a horrible headache… all this loud music isn’t helping..

S: Well, then perhaps you two should go… Rachel can bring Matthew home…

Nora smoothed her dress and stood up

N: ‘night mom

They walked out to the parking lot

B: What the hell were you doing?

N: You didn’t like what I was doing?

B: I didn’t say that... but in front of your mother!?

N: Stop complaining… I just wanted to touch you… and those leather pants… you didn’t seriously think you were going to be able to wear those and I was just going to keep my hands to myself did you? She fondled his butt and gave him a pinch.

B: Hey!…

They climbed on the bike and took off. Bo pulled up at a stop sign on a secluded section of the road. Nora’s hand went back down to his crotch, Bo jumped

B: Hey, you can’t do that when I’m driving

N: (both hands now massaging his crotch) Bo…

B: yes

N: I remembered something the other day (beginning to unbutton his pants)

B (squirming): What?

N: Well… you said you had had a lot of fantasies about me and your bike (unzipping his pants and sliding her hands inside)… Trick or treat…

B (moaning): Oh god….

N: Bo

B: Yes?

N: Maybe you could pull off the road over there and tell me about it

B: Are you serious?

N: … you can’t get me all wet then expect me to wait until we get home… that doesn’t seem fair…

Bo pulled over behind a grove of trees. He got off the bike, turned around and climbed back on facing her. He pulled her legs up over his, gathered up the skirt of her dress and reached up her thighs as she leaned back on the backrest and smiled at him.

B: Um… you are a little wet.

She closed her eyes and let him play for awhile. Then she reached toward him and yanked his pants, sliding them under his hips and off. He grabbed them just as she was ready to pitch them over her head

B: Hey… remember the last time you threw my pants away?

N: Oh … sorry

Nora leaned forward onto him chest and opened her blouse, rubbing her breasts over the leather jacket

N: Hey big guy… can I have a ride?

Bo pulled her down on top of him, nestling his face in her breasts…

B: You are amazing… I never thought I’d get you back on this bike

N: Maybe you just needed a new marketing plan

Bo rocked them back and forth slowly.

B: This one seems to be working ok...

Nora leaned back a bit and pulled her dress over her head

Bo couldn’t believe his eyes

B: Do you have any idea how many times I have fantasized about you, naked, on my bike?

N: Well, no… but I wouldn’t mind if you wanted to tell me about it… as long as I’m naked, on your bike, with you inside of me…

He pulled her back to him and kissed her.

B: It was just like this…

Bo held her close long after they had both come. She finally stirred

N: Bo?

B: yup?

N: It’s getting a little cold

B (stroking her nipples): I noticed….

He pulled her dress back over her head and grabbed his pants.

They pulled up just as Rachel pulled in the driveway with Matthew.

R: Hey, I thought you guys left ages ago!

N: I asked Bo if we could take a little detour... it’s such a nice night…. Come on Matthew... up to bed!

Later……

Nora backed out of Matthew’s room... he was so wound up from the party it had taken forever to get him to settle down. Bo came up behind her and pulled her to him, stroking her breasts through her dress…

B: You were incredible tonight

N: I’m sorry if I embarrassed you in front of my mom

B: I didn’t mind all that much

N: I just wanted you to touch me…

B: I’m happy to oblige (massaging her breasts more firmly)

Nora leaned back into him

N: please don’t stop

B: You sure?

N: yes

B: You’re not too tired?

N: I just … please don’t stop… I don’t want you to stop…

Bo turned her around and kissed her. Slowly at first, then with more need. Nora was pulling at his clothes, he picked her up and went into her room and climbed onto her bed. He pulled her dress over her head and pushed her back down stroking her belly and thighs while kissing her. Nora moaned

He stopped for a moment and undressed himself. She pulled him down on the bed as soon as he had his pants off and climbed on top of him. He held her close for a moment

B: Hey… why don’t we slow things down a little here…

N: I’m ok

B: You sure?

N: yes… it’s just… I felt so good today and all I could think about was how nice it would be to make love to you without being so exhausted… we used to stay up all night because we couldn’t get enough of each other and now I’m usually so tired…

B: Larry’s gonna kill me… come here

They were awake the rest of the night..

Next morning – early
Bo hung up the phone just as Nora was getting Matthew out the door to the bus stop

B: That was one of the officers from the hospital. Late last night RJ had some visitors. We got ‘em, John is with them now.

N: Is RJ ok?

B: Yes

N: Are you sure?

B: Hank is with him.

Just then the phone rang again. It was Hank

B: Hey, how is he?

H: Ok…

B: Do we know anything?

H: Yeah

B: I’m on my way

Bo hung up the phone as Nora picked up the Banner off the front stoop. She looked at the headline and turned
around to Bo and hit him with the paper.

B: What?!

N: You promised me

The Palace

Joe pulled up in a taxi and let the driver unload the suitcases. He registered and had everything sent upstairs. Renee came out to greet him.

R: Joe! How nice to see you again
