As Time Flies.....Chapter 11

Last time: Bo reamed Lindsay. Melanie baby-sat for Matthew while Sam unsuccessfully tried to visit Nora in the hospital. (Go Larry! LOL!) Sam overhears something about Matthew.

Llanview Police Station - Holding Cell

Sam was livid. He might not be Matthew's father? He couldn't believe what he was hearing. He realized he had missed most of the conversation, but what he had heard was certainly clear enough. How could this be? He wouldn't put anything past Lindsay, not after what she had done to Nora. She had to be lying, trying to save herself and ingratiate herself with Bo all at the same time. She was sick!

Sam tried to sound calm. "Lindsay, I realize you're in a tough situation right now. I'm not even going to address what you tried to do to Nora, except to say that I will not be your lawyer. I will not help you in any way with your legal trouble. As far as I'm concerned, I'm a victim here, just as much as Nora, and I hope they throw the book at you!"

Sam went on. "You kidnapped and tried to murder the woman I love, the mother of my child. Which brings me to what I will say. I don't believe this for a minute! Matthew is MY son! We took a DNA test that says I am Matthew's father. That's all the proof I need! You're so desperate right now you'd do anything! What surprises me is that you, Bo, could have fallen for Lindsay's tactics once again! I thought you were smarter than that." Sam took Matthew and the diaper bag from Melanie. "Thanks for watching Matthew, Lanie. I'm out of here! We've got to get ready for Mommy coming home, don't we, Matthew?" Sam nuzzled Matthew's neck as he walked away.

"Sam!" Bo called after Sam, but Sam never looked back.

Bo knew Lindsay was telling the truth, at least about this. Sam didn't know it, of course, but Bo had already questioned Jeff Barnes, the DNA lab technician. While Barnes didn't admit to tampering with the test, he didn't say he hadn't, either. Bo had been a cop for too long not to know when something smelled funny, and this DNA test reeked. He knew he'd have to convince Sam to go for another DNA test to prove it to him, but Bo knew in his gut that he was Matthew's father. This wasn't over, not by a long shot.

Sam's House

Sam had put Matthew to bed and he was sitting on the couch in the dark, holding his head in his hands. His mind was reeling. He felt like he would jump out of his skin. He started doing a mental run down. First, his son is falsely accused of a crime and now on the lam, then the love of his life is found alive after a terrible tragedy, but he's not allowed to see her. Now his ex-wife, the mother of his older children, stands accused of trying to kill said love of his life, the mother of his youngest child. To top it all off, he then overhears his youngest child may not even be his own biological child! Christ, his life sounded like the Jerry Springer Show!

He wanted to see Nora so badly. By some miracle, she was alive! He knew it was real, even though it didn't feel that way. It wouldn't seem real until he saw her with his own two eyes. Tomorrow he was going to, and no one was going to stop him! Sam said a silent prayer for Nora to wake up. He missed her so much, and couldn't bear the thought of losing her to Lindsay's evil deeds.

He wanted to kill Lindsay. It fully hit him how sick she really was like a blow to the stomach. Her nerve was incredible! She tries to kill Nora, then actually thinks he's going to represent her? That woman was so far out of it, he thought she'd stand a good chance of pleading insanity. She was insane! He thought it was a shame they didn't give the death penalty for attempted murder.

Sam was even angrier that Lindsay would try to use his son to escape her punishment. How dare she? In his book, that alone should be punishable by death! Sam didn't believe a word of it. There could be no way in hell that Matthew could be Bo's child! Besides, the DNA test proved he was the father. He had nothing to worry about. This was just Lindsay doing what she does best, manipulating and telling lies to save her own ass. Simply thinking of her made Sam tired. It had been an exhausting day. It was time for bed, time to dream of Nora and their future together. He couldn't wait!

Llanview Police Station - Bo's Office

Bo sat down at his desk. He was exhausted. What a day! Bo thought he'd sleep better knowing Nora was safe and Lindsay was locked up for the night. Hank said their arraignments were scheduled for first thing in the morning, so Melanie had gone home. She had tried to talk to Bo about what Lindsay had said about Matthew, but Bo had just walked away after Sam did.

Bo couldn't deal with Lindsay for another minute, and he really felt badly for Sam. He didn't want Sam finding out about Matthew like that, especially after the shock of learning Nora was alive and what Lindsay had done to her. He had really wanted to break the news to Sam in a much more compassionate way, but now that the cat was out of the bag, he'd do anything necessary to make it right. He wanted the truth, once and for all. He wanted his family.

Thank God he was able to get Ben and arrive in time to save Nora. He just hoped they weren't really too late after all. Nora just had to wake up! Bo knew Nora was a fighter, and he wasn't giving up on her now. She just needed to rest. So did he. It was time to go home. He was just going to ask Officer Tim for a ride home when Ben walked in.

"Hey, Bo. I didn't know where to leave your car, so I thought I'd drive it here for you. I tried you at home, but no answer. Glad I caught you! Now you can drive me home." Ben laughed and handed Bo the keys.

"Thanks, buddy. A ride home would be my pleasure! I want to thank you for everything you did today, but a ride home doesn't even begin to cover it. You have no idea how grateful I am. If it weren't for you, Nora wouldn't have made it. Thanks, Ben." Bo clapped Ben on the back.

"That means a lot to me, Bo, but don't give me too much credit. I know she's not out of the woods yet. I went to the hospital and checked up on her condition. Larry told me she's still unconscious, but he's very hopeful. We'll just have to wait and see, but Nora is one tough cookie. She's gonna make it, Bo, she really is. Hang in there, okay?" Ben smiled.

"I will. I won't lose her again... Hey, wanna go and get something to eat? I just realized I haven't eaten all day, and I'm starved! Thinking of Nora makes me hungry. Whaddya say?" Bo laughed.

Ben thought it was nice to see Bo laughing. He certainly hadn't been doing much of that lately. Bo was a good guy and Ben wished his brother nothing but happiness. He also wished he could tell Bo that he was his brother. He had felt very close to Bo when they were on their rescue mission. How could Bo turn out so good and still have Asa as a father? How did he? He was confused. He wasn't really hungry, either. He couldn't remember the last time he was actually hungry. He hadn't been himself since he found out Viki had breast cancer, but he wanted a chance to spend some time with Bo.

"Sure, Bo, I'd love to. Viki had a late meeting at the Banner, I think about breaking the news that Nora is alive. I guess you'll have to have a press conference tomorrow and tell the world the good news! I'm so happy for you, Bo. Let's eat!" Ben clapped Bo on the back and it was reciprocated heartily.

DK Diner

Bo drove to the diner. He and Ben grabbed a booth, and they talked for what seemed like hours. Ben was surprised at Bo's appetite. Bo ate two of Carlotta's enormous cheeseburgers, a huge order of onion rings, and drank a chocolate milkshake. Ben had a bowl of soup, and he ate one of Bo's onion rings. He figured he must not have inherited the Buchanan appetite.

They were just about to pay the check and leave when Asa walked in.

"Bo!" Asa bellowed. "I just heard the good news! Congratulations, son! You were quite the hero today, boy!" Asa was beaming.

"I wasn't the real hero, Pa. Ben here was the real hero. He saved Nora from certain death." Bo smiled at Ben. "Nora's not out of the woods yet, so don't go throwing any parties. Just take it easy, will you?" Bo gave Asa a wary look.

"No, son, I don't think so. No way can a Rappa-Davidson be a hero! Especially not when it comes to my Nora! I don't believe for a minute this quack could have saved her life!" Asa sneered at Ben.

"Don't start, Pa. I'm not in the mood for your nonsense whether Nora is alive or not. If you love Nora like you say you do, then you'll be grateful to Ben and let it go. Let's go, Ben." Bo glared at Asa.

"If you were really grateful, Asa, you'd call off the dogs on my nephew, Will. You should be ashamed of yourself, old man!" Ben gave Asa a dirty look and followed Bo out of the diner. Why did he even bother?

Ben apologized to Bo when they got into the car. Bo said there was no need. He too thought Asa was out of line, but when wasn't he? They laughed. Bo could see that Ben looked troubled.

"Hey, Ben, don't let the old man get you down. You can't teach an old dog new tricks, and Asa is far too old to change now." Bo chuckled.

"I know. No, it's not Asa that's bothering me, only in regard to Will's troubles. I wish he'd do the right thing and clear Will. Will is just a kid, for Christ sakes! He shouldn't have to pay for his father's sins, and I'm sure that's how all of this got started. Sorry, Bo, I don't mean to dredge up hurtful things, but Asa is pretty vindictive, and I'm tired of seeing my family used as target practice!"

Ben laid his head back on the headrest. He was tired. He was exhausted from the excitement of rescuing Nora today, and he couldn't get Viki off of his mind. He had been feeling tired for a few weeks now, but he couldn't seem to rest properly. He wanted to do more to help Viki, and he wanted to find Will. His family was just falling apart, and he felt powerless to do anything about it.

"So, Ben, if it's not Asa that's bothering you, wanna tell me what is? I'm a good listener, you know. I don't always monopolize the conversation!" Bo smiled.

"I would if I could, but I've been sworn to secrecy. Nothing to do with Will, or even Asa, but something else. When the time is right, I'll tell you. I promise." Ben wanted desperately to talk to Bo about Viki, but he knew she'd be upset if he did. He couldn't talk to anyone about Viki, except maybe Kevin, and Kevin was too busy running the Banner and worrying about Viki himself. He'd wanted to talk to Sam, but Sam had too many problems of his own. Ben felt run down. He thought a good night's sleep might do the trick.

Bo pulled up in front of Llanfair. "I don't know how to thank you, Ben. You really came through for me today. If I can ever return the favor, don't hesitate to ask, okay? Anything at all, I mean that. You're a good man and a good friend, Ben Davidson." Bo clapped Ben on the shoulder.

Ben smiled. "Just take good care of Nora, okay? I hope you and Sam can find a way to get through this, but it's not gonna be easy. I wish you luck. I'll check on Nora tomorrow. I'm sure I'll see you. Goodnight, Bo."

Ben closed the car door and went into the house. Viki still wasn't home. Ben could barely climb the stairs and get undressed. He was asleep before his head hit the pillow.
