As Time Flies.....Chapter 2
Last time: Nora wanted soup and answers. Lindsay committed a mortal soap opera sin, letting the object of her affection see her with no make-up. Bo had a backache, and Colin was doling out the drugs.
Llanview Police Station
Bo walked into the station. The buzz of the morning activity was comforting. He grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down at his desk. He was feeling better after his backache the night before, but what was really bothering him was the way Lindsay had reacted to him going into her purse. When she came out of the bedroom and saw him with her purse, she practically somersaulted across the room like Mary Lou Retton and grabbed the purse out of his hands. He had just wanted some Advil for Christ sakes, but she had acted like he was invading her inner sanctum. He knew she felt awkward about him barging in and catching her looking like a wet rat, but did she always have to behave so radically? She really made him tired!
Bo was just tired in general. He had not expected to miss Nora so much. He still felt guilty about not forgiving her on the train. What was wrong with him lately? He never used to hold grudges like this before. He still couldn't admit how deeply he had loved her, still loved her. He knew his night with Melanie had just been a distraction. Albeit a much needed one, but still a distraction. And now that he knew she was Lindsay's sister, even if he was interested in pursuing the relationship, he knew he couldn't and definitely wouldn't. She was a nice girl though, and he wondered how she could have the same genes as wacky Lindsay. Frankly, he didn't know why he even cared about Lindsay or her feelings, especially after she had dropped that bombshell about Matthew. He knew he should hate her, but he felt sorry for her. His reverie was dissolved as the door to his office flew open and Hank walked in.
"Hey, Bo. Listen, something's come over the wire. They think they've spotted Will, Jessica and Cristian in Ohio. They're apparently traveling with a rock band. The Ohio troopers are going to close in. I thought you'd want to know right away."
"Thanks, Hank. Those kids sure gave the authorities a run for their money, didn't they? I almost hope they can't catch them again. I guess I'd better warn Lindsay."
Bo picked up the phone and called Lindsay. It was still fairly early, and he knew she always slept late. He could hear the sleep in her voice as she picked up the phone. "Hello?" she whispered.
"Lindsay, it's me. Sorry to disturb you, but I knew you'd want to know. I hate having to make this call, but..."
"Don't say another word, Bo. I don't want to hear it! I know what you're going to say." Bo could hear her sobbing in the background. He knew then that he shouldn't have bothered with a phone call. He just should have gone over to the gallery.
"Lindsay, calm down. I'm coming right over, okay? Don't go anywhere." Bo hung up the phone and walked out of his office. "Going out for a while, Sophia, but I'll bring my cell. You call me immediately if something comes through about Will, okay?"
The Gallery
Lindsay opened the door immediately when she heard Bo's soft knock. She was a wreck. Her eyes were all red and puffy, and she was shaking.
"Hey, hey. Come here." Bo put his arms around Lindsay. He wished he could be anywhere but here. She was trembling and crying and starting to get hysterical. He thought this must be what they meant by "high maintenance." He scolded himself for that thought as he knew Lindsay was not the strongest of women, and this would be a tough situation for anyone to handle. As he stood there holding Lindsay, he thought how Nora would handle this if it were her son or even Rachel on the run. He thought Nora would be much calmer, and of course stronger. Nora was a fine woman. They certainly didn't make them like her every day. And there she was again, invading his thoughts when she had no business doing so. He was ashamed he wasn't thinking of Lindsay when she needed him so much.
Lindsay's tears escalated to wailing. "Bo, what will I do? I've lost our baby, and now I'm going to lose my son. I'm going to be totally alone!"
"That's not true, Lindsay. You still have Jen, and you still have your sister. You also have Sam, and I'll be there for you too. I'll do whatever I can do to help Will, and you, to get through this."
"The only thing you can do is get my family back!" Lindsay's nose was starting to run now, and her eyes were almost swollen shut. "I know! Bo, let's make a new family! Let's have that baby we were supposed to have. I'll be the best mother ever! Whaddya say?" Lindsay smiled through her tears, her eyes illuminated with an eerie glow.
Bo didn't know what to say. He was horrified. How could she say that? Was she just going to forget about Will now that he might be in custody? He wondered about Jen just then. Maybe she stayed away deliberately because her mother was so unstable. He wouldn't blame her. How was it possible to have such mixed feelings for a person? Lindsay was certainly unique, and he wasn't so sure it was in a good way.
"Lindsay, I think you're very upset right now and you're not thinking straight. I hardly think with all that's gone on lately, you could even think of having a baby. Especially with me. For all I know I've got a baby already, thanks to you." Bo quickly regretted his words. The last thing he needed was to have a riled-up Lindsay on his hands. She was already hysterical enough. "I'm sorry, Lindsay. Now isn't the time for that." Bo shuffled his feet.
Lindsay looked down at the floor. She realized she had gone too far. "Bo, can I make you some coffee?"
"No, that's okay. I'm going to get back to the station and see if there's any news about Will." Bo turned and walked to the door. "I'll call you if I hear something okay?" He let himself out.
Lindsay stared at the door. What was wrong with her? She should have known better. She was in a pretty precarious situation with Bo, and her behavior this morning certainly didn't make things better. She pushed Will to the back of her mind and went into action.
Llanview Police Station
Bo stopped by Hank's office on his way to his own. Hank said there was no news yet. Bo grabbed another cup of coffee and sat down at his desk for the second time that day. He checked all of the paperwork on his desk. Nothing exciting, so he thought he'd do some research into a recent mugging in Angel Square. (Okay, I can't resist... so now he checks his paperwork? LOL!) He had just logged on to his computer when Lindsay walked in.
"Bo, am I disturbing you?"
"No, but there's no news yet."
"That's okay. I really came to apologize. I acted like an idiot this morning, and I'm sorry. I'm just worried about Will."
"I know. It's okay. Consider it forgotten."
Sophia knocked on the door. "Commish, there's a doctor here from Cherryvale. He says a patient is missing from the clinic up there. The Cherryvale police referred him here, since their volunteer police department doesn't have the resources to handle a missing person case. Can I send him in?"
"Sure, Sophia. Have him come right in."
Bo stood up and extended his hand. "I'm Bo Buchanan, Llanview Police Commissioner. How can I help?"
"I'm Dr. Harold Williams. I'm the Hospital Administrator at the Cherryvale Clinic. This may sound strange, but we've had a patient go missing."
"That does sound odd, Dr. Williams. Can you tell me what happened?"
Bo forgot Lindsay was sitting in his office. An intriguing case usually made him forget minor details like that.
"Well, Commissioner, we had taken in a Jane Doe patient after the train wreck. She was in Intensive Care, but now we can't find her, nor have we seen the doctor who was treating her. Strange, isn't it? This woman was very badly injured, and I can't imagine she was able to disappear on her own. We've combed the entire clinic but can't find her anywhere, so we've eliminated any kind of administrative error. I'm just totally baffled. I've tried to get a hold of Dr. MacIver, but he hasn't answered any of my calls."
"Dr. MacIver you said? As in Colin MacIver?" Bo's instincts were on high alert now. He remembered his recent run-in with Dr. MacIver, here at the police station. Dr. MacIver had said he was there to report a missing woman, but the conversation had quickly turned into a confrontation about Melanie. He realized now that Colin had left without giving him any details about the missing woman.
Lindsay started to shake. Thank God Bo wasn't concentrating on her. She didn't think she could trust herself to act normally. That Colin had to be a major moron. How could he not have covered his bases on this one? She had to get out of there and fast. "Bo, I just remembered that I have an appointment. I've got to run. See you later!" Lindsay practically ran out of the police station.
Bo wasn't paying attention to her. He was much more interested in what was happening in his office. He knew that Dr. MacIver was up to no good, and here was proof. He'd love to bust that smarmy doctor on grounds of pompousness, let alone a real felony! He took all of the relevant information from Dr. Williams, and said he would get right on it. When he asked for a description of the patient, Dr. Williams told him that she had red hair.
