As Time Flies.....Chapter 9
Last time: Bo gets Nora to Llanview Hospital. Lindsay makes her one phone call to Sam. Sam finds out Nora is alive, and what happens when one assumes. Nora's medical condition is uncertain.
Llanview Police Station
Bo had taken a taxi from Llanview Hospital to the police station. He knew how worried Hank was about Nora. He was on his way to Hank's office to give him the update on Nora's condition when he and Sam collided in the hallway. Sam had been carrying Matthew in front of him, and the head-on frontal collision made a Matthew "sandwich". Matthew giggled and tried to grab Bo's badge. At least he thought it was funny. Sam rubbed Matthew's head to make sure he wasn't hurt. Bo bent down to pick up Matthew's diaper bag.
Sam was fuming. "For Christ sakes, watch where you're going, Bo! Where the hell have you been? It's about time you showed up! What the hell is going on? Where and how is Nora?" Sam's eyes were blazing. He grabbed the diaper bag away from Bo.
Bo couldn't take his eyes off of Matthew. Matthew looked so much like Nora. If he looked closely, he thought Matthew might have his eyes. Sam's whiny voice intruded on his thoughts.
"Bo, I asked you a question! What the hell is going on? Start talking, pal! I want answers, and I want them now!" Sam was furious, and his face was turning red again.
"Sam, calm down..."
"I will NOT calm down! Why is everyone telling me to do that? It isn't every day you find out the mother of your child whom you thought was dead is really alive!" Flecks of spittle flew from Sam's mouth.
"Sam, I can't talk to you unless you calm down. You're going to scare Matthew." Bo sighed. "Let's go into my office, okay?" Bo had been going to see Hank, but under the circumstances, he figured Hank could wait a few minutes longer.
Bo opened the door for Sam and let him go in first. Sam sat down and put Matthew on his lap. Bo leaned on his desk.
"It's a long story, Sam, and I guess you already spoke to Hank. I haven't even filled him in yet, but I'll tell you what I know, okay? First of all, you obviously know Nora is alive. She wasn't killed in the train wreck after all. Colin MacIver rescued her, then he and Lindsay conspired to hide Nora and keep her under wraps. Things must have gone bad, because when I got there, Lindsay was trying to kill Nora by injecting her with cyanide. If it weren't for Ben, Nora might really have died this time."
Sam cut him off. "And just why did you involve my brother in this? Why didn't you tell me, Bo? I would have wanted to save Nora!" Sam was practically whining.
"Sam, there wasn't time for that. Everything happened so fast. Ben is a doctor, and CrossRoads is on the way to Cherryvale, so it was the easiest thing to do. Just be glad he was there and he was able to save Nora's life!" Bo was surprised at Sam and his inappropriate comment. He couldn't believe Sam was actually worried about who had saved Nora's life! Bo thought Sam should be down on bended knee thanking God that Nora was still alive, not pulling this kind of petty crap. He figured he'd give Sam a break, since the guy was taking all of this so hard, and he didn't even know about Nora's condition yet.
"Listen, Sam, there's more. Nora's condition is not the best. She might be in a coma. Larry says she has some serious injuries that she sustained in the train wreck. Those combined with the trauma she went through today might be why she's still unconscious, but they don't know yet. We may not know for a couple of days."
Sam couldn't believe it. So much for happy endings. "I want to see her, Bo. Right now!"
"I don't think that's a good idea, Sam. She's in Intensive Care. I was barely able to see her myself. Larry only let me stay for a minute. Besides, that's no place for Matthew. I think you should wait until tomorrow." Bo patted Sam on the shoulder.
"I don't care what you think, Bo! You aren't in charge of Nora, let's get that straight right now!" Sam was turning red again and he licked his lips furiously. "I'm going to the hospital whether you like it or not!" Sam jumped out of the chair with Matthew and grabbed the diaper bag. He was out of Bo's office before Bo could protest. It was just as well, really. This way Sam could see for himself.
Bo decided to go into Hank's office and fill his friend in, finally. He also wanted to know what was happening with the criminal investigation. As he walked into the squad room, he saw Sam was still there. He was talking to Melanie, who looked like she had been crying.
"Bo, what's going on? I got a call from Colin, and he said he's been arrested!"
Sam put his free arm around Melanie. He knew how she was feeling right now, but unlike her he didn't really care about Lindsay. All he could think about was Nora. Melanie leaned her head on Sam's shoulder, but she was looking at Bo.
"I'm sorry, Melanie, but it's true. Apparently, after Colin rescued Nora from the train wreck, he and Lindsay kidnapped her. Then Lindsay tried to kill her. Colin's been arrested on kidnapping charges, but I'm sure they'll set bail for him if you want to hang around until the arraignment." Bo felt sorry for her. She was much too innocent and nice to have a family like this one!
Melanie sniffled. "When is the arraignment?" She wiped her nose with a tissue.
Before Bo could answer, Sam interrupted. "Lanie, if you're gonna hang around, can you watch Matthew for me? I'd like to go to the hospital and see Nora."
"Sure, Sam. I'd be happy to. It'll keep my mind off of all of this horrible trouble." Sam handed Matthew to Melanie and gave her the diaper bag. "Thanks!" He called over his shoulder as he left the three of them standing there.
"Bo, when is the arraignment? And how much do you think they'll set bail for? I hope I can afford to get him out." Melanie started crying again. "I bet you think I'm a fool, Bo. I'm divorcing this man, who's obviously capable of terrible things, yet I don't want to see him in jail. What's wrong with me?"
"It's okay, honey, nothing is wrong with you. I'd say you're behaving rather normally in a very abnormal situation. Why don't you and Matthew sit down in my office, and I'll check with Hank and find out what time the arraignment is scheduled." He smiled at Melanie. Poor kid! Not only was her husband in trouble, but so was her sister. He felt sorry for her.
Bo escorted Melanie and Matthew into his office and got them settled. He went to Hank's office and they caught each other up on all of the latest developments. Hank was very worried about Nora's condition, while Bo was furious that Lindsay and Colin had refused to talk without their lawyers. Bo knew it was time. He had put it off long enough.
Llanview Police Station - Holding Cell
Lindsay heard the footsteps coming down the hallway. She was a wreck. Her black eye was purple and blue with tinges of yellow. Her arm felt like it was broken, but it was only sprained. Not serious enough for her to get out of this miserable jail cell and get taken to the hospital instead. Christ, she couldn't even get injured right!
She still couldn't believe how crazy Bo had been. If she had only gotten to Colin's house 5 minutes sooner, Nora would be dead right now. Damn Colin! She was still livid at her stupid brother-in-law. As far as she was concerned, this whole thing was his fault. She was very happy they weren't sharing a cell, or she'd also be up for murder charges! Speaking of charges, that better be Sam coming. What the hell was taking him so long?
Lindsay stood up walked over to the bars to meet her visitor. To her dismay, she came face to face with Bo. The last person on the planet she wanted to see. She was mortified! The embarrassment of being caught with no make-up on was nothing compared to this feeling. Lindsay desperately wanted to run away. She wished there were no bars blocking her way so she could just run right past Bo and make a quick getaway. Then she saw the murderous look in Bo's eyes, and she was suddenly very grateful for those bars. She stepped back and sat on the bed while Bo just glared at her. She felt like a bug under a microscope.
About a minute passed. Bo was just staring, his eyes shooting laser death rays. He didn't even blink. Lindsay couldn't stand it anymore. "Well, aren't you going to say something?"
