PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Hillary B. Smith(Nora, ONE LIFE TO LIVE)

Soap Opera Digest
May 1998

Nora's blissful marruage to Bo didn't pose much of an acting challenge for Hillary B. Smith, an actress who can chew scenery with the best of them. Sure, Nora picked up a case here and there, but things didn't pick up for Smith until Bo and Nora hit the rocks

A few weeks ago, Nora was duped into believing that BO had had an affair with her assistant, Georgie. Suddenly, the normally confident Nora lost it. She hopped into her car and sobbed uncontrollably; while drowning her sorrows at a biker bar, Nora's sadness, fueled by alcohol, turned to rage. A drunken Nora stumbled around, spitting(literally) a slurred sermon on committment to the bikers, until she couldn't keep that stiff upper lip anymore, and slumped over the bar counter, crying into her Seven and Seven. When she finally returned to Bo, Nora walked into their home and stroked the mantle over the fireplace. We got the feeling that things might never be the same again for Llanview's happiest couple.

Maybe we felt Nora's pain because we think of her as a good friend. That's something that the smart-witted Smith has brought to her character-----she's made Nora eminently accessible. Whether she is shoving chili dogs in her mouth or telling Asa off, we can't help but like her. Nora's a strong, down-to-earth woman who successfully managed a career and a family. Yet, she's not invincible.

While the in-control Nora appears to be back, Smith is making sure that we're aware that Nora is still extremely unsettled. The forlorn look in her eye is ever- present, even when she lashes out at her closest friends in sheer frustration.

The Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy Award in 1994 was no mistake-----all this lady needs is a story.
