A Home for Love - Part 1

Author’s Note: This takes place before Asa passes away and before Nora and Clint. Bo still lives in his garret apartment and we haven’t heard from Lindsay in a long, long time. Matthew and Nora are living with Asa and Renee.

Now, on with the story…

“Mom, don’t you think it’s time we found a place of our own again?”

“Don’t you like living here with Grandpa and Renee?”

“Sure, I love them both, but this,” he motions around the lavish and well appointed living room, “isn’t really us.”

“Maybe you’re right, Matthew. I guess we could start house hunting, just to see what’s out there.”

“Actually,” Matthew said with an innocent smile, “I found a place for us to check out.”

A few days later…

“Dad, have you ever considered getting a bigger place?”

“Do I need a bigger place?”

“Well, sure. I mean, it’s sort of snug in here when it’s just you and me and it’s really uncomfortable when you have the guys over for football. I’ll probably want to start bringing some friends over too.”

“But you live with your Mom, bud, most of the time.”

“I know dad, but as I get older you and I are going to need to spend more time together. You know, quality father-son time.”

“There’s nothing I would like better, son. I guess I could look around for something a little more roomy.”

“I heard about a place I think would be perfect, if you’re interested.”

“Come in Mom, see if you like it.”

Nora walked into the model of the duplex Matthew was insistent she see and was pleasantly surprised by how spacious and inviting the layout seemed.

“What do you think?” her son asked.

“Well, it’s nice, but I’ve just seen the entry, let me finish the tour.”

“I know you’re going to love it.”

“Matthew, settle down. I do like it, ok?”

“Cool. Look, this would be your room,” he said pulling her arm toward the master bedroom. “Look, here’s your bathroom. It’s enormous and has a gigantic tub. And the closet, it could be another bedroom it’s so big.”

“You really like it?”

“It’s perfect for us, Mom. Not too big, not too small. It’s actually a lot like our other house, it has an upstairs.”

“I must admit, it is much bigger than I thought it would be.”

“So, can we get one?”

*****

“I don’t know about a duplex, Matthew. Do I really want neighbors so close?”

“Dad, you lived in a tiny little apartment with people on both sides of you and down the hall. This is just one other person, and this is really like a house, so it won’t have thin walls like apartment buildings do.”

“When did you become such an expert on buildings?”

“I’m just saying, a duplex is great. It’s not as much work as a house, but a lot more private than an apartment. Pull over to the right, there’s the model. You’re going to love it dad, trust me.”
