Short Story - It's All In the Past, Isn't It?

Gabrielle walked into Crossroads, “Hi Max.” She fell into the chair and put her face in her hands.

“What’s wrong now?”

“Nothing, Bo is just spending time with his son.” She took the drink he offered her.

“And?”

“And what?” Taking a sip she looks up at him.

“Gabrielle Bo loves you, he offered to take the day off for you just the other day,” he shook his head, “you are the fool that turned him down.”

She shot her head up, “Well, he didn’t push very hard to make me cancel my plans with you.”

Max just shook his head with a smile on his face, “Bo is a simple guy, and he trusts you. You might want to try it.” He went to wait on someone else.

“It’s not Bo I don’t trust.” She emptied her glass and slid it over for Max to refill.
~ ~ ~
Bo stood awkwardly on the front porch of her house, this was the first time he was going to see Matthew since he said he wanted to be his dad, he really wanted to tell him the truth, but both he and Nora decided that the whole paternity test/DNA conversation should wait until he was older. He knocked on the door.

“He’s here!” Matthew shouted as he ran down the stairs to get the door. He opened it, “Hi B..” a big smile crept across his face, “dad!”

“Hey champ!” Bo leaned down to hug him as he smiled. He looked up Nora was across the room, wiping a tear from her eye.

“Allergies, you know.” Bo just nodded as he and Matthew walked back into the room.

“So, where do you want to go for dinner?”

Matthew looked at his mom, “Where do you want to go?”

She pointed at herself. “Me?” She shook her head, “I’m not going Matthew, this is dinner for you and B..” she grinned, “your dad.” Bo had to admit he really liked the sound of that.

Matthew looked at Bo, “If she doesn’t go with us…”

Bo finished, “she won’t eat!”

“Exactly!” Matthew and Bo just laughed as Nora sneered at them.

“Hey, no ganging up on me.”

“Come on Nora, why don’t you go with us? Max reopened Crossroads, we can go check it out, what do you say?”

“Bo, I really need to get some work done,” she pointed to a stack of papers on the table in front of her desk.

He scratched his chin, “Yeah that was your reason for not joining Hank and I for lunch today too, you on a diet?” He looked down at her as if to see if she needed to.

“NO!” She cut her eyes at him, “Are you trying to imply that I need to be.”

Matthew was smiling at the conversation between his parents, they were both smiling despite themselves, ‘Maybe Starr was right if I can just get them to spend time together.’

“Please mom, come eat with us.”

“Fine,” she looked at Bo, “I’m in the mood for a greasy burger and a beer anyway,” as they got to the door she looked back at him, “and by the way Buchanan, your buying.”

He laughed as he shook his head and closed the door behind him.

Matthew ran to the jeep and jumped in the back seat. Nora looked at him. “Don’t you want shotgun?” She really didn’t want to sit next to Bo.

“Nah, you can.”

Bo looked at her, “You can always sit in back with him, and pretend I’m your driver,” he fake bowed, “at your service maam.”

“That’s quite all right, thank you,” she opened the door, “you would probably expect a tip.”
~ ~ ~
“Hello? Hi Al. You need to borrow my car? Sure, no problem, I’ll come get you and you can bring me back to Crossroads. What? No, I am visiting your father. No, he’s with Matthew. No, nothings wrong, Bo and I are perfectly fine, I’ll be there in a bit.” She hangs up the phone as Max comes over.

“Was that Al?”

“Yes, he needs to borrow my car, I am going to take mine to him and have him drop me back here, you can take me home can’t you?”

“You want me to take you to bed too!” He laughed at her.

“NO!”

“Well, you said you wanted to make him jealous.”

She slid off the chair, “Shut up Max.”
~ ~ ~
“I want to pick a table.” Matthew ran to a table by the dance floor. Remembering the night of his ‘prom,’ “Can I have some quarters?” Nora went to dig in her purse.

“I got it.” Bo pulled out a handful of change and picked out the quarters to give to Matthew, he handed them to him and Matthew headed for the jukebox.

Bo held the seat out for Nora to sit down, “You want a beer?”

“Please.” She set her purse on the chair next to her and waited for Matthew to return.

“Hey Commissioner.”

“Hi Christian, how you doing?”

“Fine sir, what can I get you?”

“Two drafts and a root beer.”

“I’ll have Natalie bring them over to your table.”

“Thanks.”

The music started to play as Bo made his way back to the table, “Jump, Jive and Wail” was surrounding them.

“Hey isn’t this that song you danced to that night at Rodi’s?”

Bo nodded, “Yeah I think it is.” He held out his hand, “You want to try it again?”

“I think I’ll pass. Thanks.”

“C’mon mom,” Matthew gave her puppy dog eyes.

“Yeah, c’mon mom,” Bo added, with the same pleading look.

“You two are pathetic,” she said as she stood, but she noticed her heart was beating a little bit faster at the fact that Bo had called her mom, it just seemed so right, like this is how it should have been, she shook the thoughts from her mind as they prepared to Jitterbug.

Natalie brought the drinks over to the table, and Matthew handed her the remaining quarters as he whispered in her ear. Then he took a sip of his rootbeer and smiled as he watched his parents dance.

Both of them out of breath, they sat laughing and took a sip of their beers. “That was fun, Re..” he cleared his throat, “Nora, thanks.” Her heart raced, she felt the flush in her face and it was no longer just from the dancing.

Matthew looked at Bo, “Dad, what were you going to say?”

Nora looked at Bo as she did his eyes caught hers, and he caught the light playing with the highlights in her hair. “Umm, what did you say Matthew?” He loosened his tie, it suddenly felt very warm in here.

“What were you going to say?”

“Nothing.”

Natalie came over to take there order, Bo looked at Nora who just nodded, “Three burgers and fries please.” Natalie went and placed the order and went to talk to Christian. She told him about Matthew’s request. He gave her a few choices.

“That’s mine and mom’s favorite.”

“I know.”

“You do?”

“Matthew, a..” he was interrupted when My Girl started to play on the jukebox, he looked over at Nora, she went to stand as she picked up her purse.

“If you’ll excuse me,” she headed towards the restroom, once inside she went to the sink and put cold water on her face. She didn’t know what was going on out there, but there was no way she could be near Bo while that song played. Natalie walked in behind her.

“Hi Nora” seeing what she was doing, “you okay?”

“Huh,” she looked back at the faucet, “oh yeah I’m fine, just warm.” She got a towel to dry off her face. “I better get back.”

Natalie shook her head, “Well Matthew your mom definitely has it bad for your dad.” She washed her hands and headed back out.

When she got back to the table Bo was showing Matthew how to play pool, she just sat back and watched. As Bo missed shot after shot, Matthew just howled, Christian walked over to Bo, whispering in his ear, and then he nodded at Natalie. She came over and took over for Bo. He went to sit at the table.

“Quite the pool shark huh?” She smiled at him.

“I prefer darts.” He took a gulp of beer.

She looked around, “Of course you do, there aren’t any here to play!”

“Is that a challenge?”

“Did it sound like a challenge?” She leaned back in her chair.

“You haven’t changed a bit, you are still overly competitive.” He crossed his arms over his chest.

“What? I’m overly competitive. You are the one sitting there sulking because his niece is a better pool player.”

He shot her a look.

“I am not sulking,”

She just raised her eyebrows, “What do you..” When a Man Loves a Woman started playing, “umm , do you, ummm” she shook her head trying to get the song out of her head. He couldn’t take his eyes off her, she refused to look at him.

He cleared his throat, “Is it hot in here or is it just me?” Before she could answer, “I need to use the restroom.”

He walked over to the sink and splashed cold water on his face, “It’s just memories, old feelings Buchanan, just shake it off, Nora is your past, Gabrielle is your future,” he looked in the mirror, “isn’t she?”

Christian walked in, “Isn’t she what?”

Bo turned around at Christian’s voice, “Huh?”

“You said isn’t she, isn’t she what?”

He grabbed a towel and started wiping his hands, “Have you and Natalie set a date yet?”

The paper was ripping he was wiping so hard, Christian found it hard to stifle his laughter.

“Yes, we have, the second Saturday in November, you and Nora are invited. You will be there right?”

“Of course we will,” then he realized what Christian said, “I mean Nora and I will both be there, but I won’t be with her, we will be by ourselves, or well, I will be with umm, with..’

Christian just stared at him, waiting for him to answer, Matthew came running into the bathroom, “Come on dad, dinner is on the table.”

“On my way son.” He followed Matthew out the door.
Christian stood shaking his head, “Oh yeah, Bo still has a thing for Nora.” He smiled as he thought about what to play next. “I know just what will do it.” He went to wash his hands.

Bo sat down, “This looks delicious.” He licked his lips.

“It is,” Nora said after swallowing her first bite. “Might be better than Rodi’s.”

“Impossible,” Bo just looked at her as he took a large bite of his burger.

She waited for him to finish, “Well?”

“It might be close, but I would have to have a Rodi’s burger to compare it too.”

“You are too much.”
~ ~ ~
“Send me some loving.”

“Cris, are you sure?”

“Positive, it’s what they danced down the aisle to at their wedding.”

“Really?” She looked over at them.

“Yeah, it was quite the event from what Jess told me.
They almost left and then Max presented Little Richard and they strolled down the aisle to Send Me Some Lovin.”

“I hope you]re right.” She headed for the jukebox.
~ ~ ~
He wiped his face with his napkin as he swallowed the last bite. “Well, what did you think champ?”

“Delicious,” he mumbled with his mouth full.

“Matthew Rappa,” she looked at Bo, “Hanen!” They hadn’t talked about names, but somehow it just didn’t seem right for Matthew to be a Rappaport, she and Bo still had things to discuss, Gabrielle wasn’t going to like that one bit. She smiled as she thought, ‘she woudn’t like this one bit either.’ She shook her head as she chuckled to herself.

“Care to share the joke with us?”

“Huh?” she looked up, “oh it was nothing.”

He raised his eyebrows, “Whatever.” He looked at his watch. “It’s getting kind of late, we should probably get Matthew home.”

Matthew who had stopped eating a few minutes earlier started eating again like he was famished, “I’m still eating,” he mumbled again with his mouth full, he never noticed his mother’s stern look as he was looking for Natalie. She was pushing the buttons on the Jukebox.

Send Me Some Loving started to play, they turned to look at each other at the same time, neither could break the eye contact that they had no intention of creating, Bo started tapping his foot, ‘Oh hell with it!’

He held out his hand, “Would you like to dance?” She wanted to say no, everything in her told her to say no, scream no, she just slightly nodded as she put her hand in Bo’s. They started strolling across the dance floor, Matthew watched in amazement, before long they were laughing as they fell into step with each other, knowing the next move of their partner.

Gabrielle walked in the door as they were dancing, she couldn’t take her eyes off the couple on the dance floor, as the song ended Bo spun Nora into him and dipped her back, their lips were only an inch apart, Matthew was staring willing his father, to kiss her, just as it looked like he might, “Max Darling I’m back.”

Bo almost dropped Nora when he heard her voice. He helped her stand up and then went to talk to Gabrielle, but when he looked over, she was leaning in close to Max giggling, the way lovers do, Max just smiled at whatever she was saying, he knew Max knew he was there, so what was going on between these two anyway?

“Bo, are you okay?” Nora asked him, he had just stopped in the middle of the dance floor, she looked over to where he was staring.

“Oh. You know it’s time for Matthew to go to bed, I can just call a cab to take us home.”

“No!” He turned to look at her.

Startled and a little upset by his tone, “Excuse me?”

“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to yell, but I will take you home, I brought you to dinner.” She pointed to Gabrielle, he just shook his head, “looks like she’s busy to me.”

He walked over to the table, “Come on champ, let’s go.”

Matthew jumped off the chair and headed for the door, he grabbed both his parent’s hands, he didn’t want Bo to go to Gabrielle, Bo’s other hand was in his pocket, he felt the ring box. He stopped at the door and removed his hand from Matthew’s

“Dad, what...” Nora put her hand over his mouth, he looked up at her and she just glared at him, all of a sudden she realized tonight had been a setup and they were going to have a long talk with their little boy when they got home.

Bo got over to where Max and Gabrielle were, he cleared his throat, Gabrielle turned, acting flustered, “Hi Darling, I didn’t know you were here.”

“Well, don’t mind me I am getting ready to leave,” he looked over at Nora and Matthew and smiled at them, “with my family.” He slid the ring across the bar to Max, “Maybe you can use this,” he looked at Gabrielle one last time before turning around, “looks like I won’t be needing it.” He went back over to where Nora and Matthew were standing, Nora had a shocked expression on her face as Bo took Matthew’s hand and placed his other arm around Nora’s waist as he led them out the door. He looked at Nora, “I think we have some things to discuss, don’t you?” She just nodded with a very big grin on her face. But neither of their grins matched the one on their young son's!
