Enough
She crumbled to the floor, holding her belly, crying for him, herself and for their unborn child. He stood on the other side, head resting against the closed door, still on an emotional roller coaster from the events that had unfolded at the Woman of the Year Banquet just hours earlier. Her words were still screaming in his head, just as her tears and muffled cries were evident even through the wooden door between them.
"When you love someone, really and truly love someone,
when is enough finally enough?"
When does one of us say, that's it, I can't take it anymore? When
does a person do the unimaginable? When does someone hurt the
one person in the world that should never be hurt? What makes
us do these things? All I know is, I love you. I love you with
all my heart, down to the depths of my soul. So, I guess for me,
the answer is never. I can never, ever have enough of you, and
I would do anything to have you in my life, now and forever. I'm
sorry I hurt you, but just remember, I did it for love! So I'm
asking you again, when is enough finally enough?"
Her words echoed in his head. His hand tightly held on to the door knob. He could feel her presence through the 2 inches of wood that separated them. But now, along with the separation by the door, they were also separated by this so called "act of love" that she had committed. Again, he heard her words "When is enough finally enough?"
3 Months Later
She sat on the floor, staring at her beautiful son, who was sleeping soundly. She gently rocked the crib. A smile crept across this angel's lips, and she smiled to herself.
A hand gently touched her shoulder. She didn't have to look up. Instinctively, she put her hand on top of his and squeezed. "Did you see him smile?" she asked.
"Ya. He's happy just like his old man." Sitting down behind her, she rested her head back on him. "You have made me the happiest man alive, Red!" They stayed like that for a few minutes, taking in the beauty of their son. "Thanks for not giving up on me, or on us. I will never get enough of you, or of my child. One of these days, we will be looking at our grandchildren just like this."
His arms were so lovingly and protectively wrapped around
her, and she felt safe. This is the way it would be, always and
forever. And now, the tears that welled in her eyes, were tears
of joy.
