Let it Snow

The radio is blaring as Nora makes her way home from Statesville. Nora is singing along…thinking that it will keep her mind off the worsening snowstorm.

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

”And I thought driving back and forth to Statesville in the middle of winter was a good idea…why? Like you could ever get back on that train again. That ain’t going to happen.” Nora chuckles to herself as she realizes that she’s alone in the car.

“So people think I’m crazy. Who cares? It’s not like there’s anybody out here taking their lives in their hands except me.” She continues singing out loud.

When we finally kiss goodnight
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way hom….

Nora swerves her car in order to avoid an overturned vehicle. Her car spins around but she’s able to get it under control fairly quickly. She finally stops the car by the side of the road. She looks in her rearview mirror and sees the driver of the overturned truck struggling to get free. She knows she has to help. Nora jumps out of her car and starts walking. All of a sudden she recognizes the truck and her walk becomes a run. She sees the driver lying by the side of the road.

“Bo…are you all right?”

“Red…is that you?”

“Yea, it’s me. What happened?”

Bo looked at his overturned truck and shook his head. “A deer ran out in front of me. I hit the brakes and the truck decided to roll. Luckily the deer didn’t get hurt. I’m not sure I can say the same about me.”

Bo tries to sit up but he struggles so Nora kneels down next to him to help. She notices that his head is bleeding fairly severely.

“Where do you hurt?” Nora tenderly puts a handkerchief on his head to try and stop the bleeding.

Bo smiles at Nora as he places his hand over hers on his head. “Well…obviously my head.”

Nora pulls her hand away self-consciously. “Any place else?”

Bo tries to stand up but slumps back down to the ground. “I think my ankle might be broken.”

“I need to get you to the hospital. You probably have a concussion and that leg needs to be fixed. Can you stand if I help you?”

”Maybe.” Bo struggles to get up and Nora grabs him under his arm to steady him. They get him vertical and Bo tries to put some weight on his foot. He winces in pain. “Not a smart idea.”

“Can you just lean against your truck hare and I’ll move my car closer. Okay?”

”Anything you say Red” Bo answered groggily.

Nora puts her hand to his face and makes him focus on her. “Stay with me here Commish…stay with me.” Nora rushes back to her car and drives it to within 5 feet of where Bo is leaning against his overturned truck. Nora helps him in and then starts driving towards town. Bo rests his head against the headrest.

The snow is coming down heavier and heavier. “Bo…I don’t think we’re going to make it. This snow is so heavy I can’t keep the car on the road. I’m going to go to the lodge.”

Nora drives as quickly as she can to the lodge but they are still moving at a snail’s pace. Finally Nora sees the lodge and she pulls the car in as close to the door as she can. Nora helps Bo stand and then wraps her arms around him as they slowly walk to the front door. Bo can’t put any weight on his foot so he hops more than walks. They finally get inside and Nora gets Bo settled on the couch. Nora gets his foot up on a foot stool and gets some ice from the kitchen that she puts on his ankle.

“I’m going to get a fire going in the fireplace.”

”You Red?” Bo answers with a twinkle in his eye.

Nora laughs…happy to hear him joke when she knows he’s in pain. “Yes me. I was a Girl Scout you know.”

“I just never saw you as the fire building type. Not once during the whole time we were together did you ever build a fire.” Bo smiles at the memories. “Well at least not in the fireplace.”

They looked at each other sheepishly…realizing where the conversation was heading.

“Just be quiet and I’ll get the fire….in the fireplace….going.” Then I’ll see if I can get an ambulance up here to get you.”

The fire is soon going but all attempts to call out of the lodge are unsuccessful.

“The phone lines must be down. And all I get on my cell is ‘out of service area.’” Nora puts her phone back into her purse and sits down on the couch next to Bo. She notices his clammy skin and shallow breathing. “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know. I’m feeling awful dizzy.”

“Let me look at the cut on your head.” Nora gingerly takes the handkerchief off of the wound. “It’s still bleeding but not too bad. Does Asa have a first aid kit here?”

“In the bathroom I think.”

Nora gets the wound bandaged but Bo is still feeling dizzy and his skin is moist.

“Bo…I think you may be going into shock. That broken ankle and head wound are doing a number on you. I’m going to get a blanket.”

“I just want to sleep.” Bo tries to lay down on the couch.

”No…” Nora yells at him. “You can’t sleep. You more than likely have a concussion. You have to stay awake.”

“I don’t want to stay awake,” Bo answers angrily.

Nora rolls her eyes at him. “I know that attitude is just the shock talking so I won’t say anything but honey…you really need to stay awake. If you go to sleep with a concussion you might not wake up again. And I couldn’t bear the thought….”

“Okay…I’ll stay awake.” Nora gets a blanket out of the closet and drapes it over Bo. She tucks him in and sits down next to him. “Tell me stories about Matt.”

Nora looked at him with surprise. “Matt?”

“Yea. What better way to keep me awake than telling me stories about my favorite guy?”

“I guess I can tell you stories. He loves school. He’s learning to read and write and that’s making him happy. He wants to be able to really read ‘Ook the Book’ that you gave him for his birthday. He loves that book.” Nora smiles at Bo. “That is still one of his all time favorite books.”

“I knew he’d like it because of all the rhymes.”

“He still walks around the house rhyming everything. Sometime it drives me crazy. He’s playing peewee hockey this winter. He can barely stand up on those skates but he’s out there hustling.”

Bo smiles at the image of Matt trying to skate. “I can just about imagine him out there. His jersey’s probably bigger than he is and I bet he’s swimming in those breezers.”

“He looks so small out on the ice. But at least it’s a ‘no check’ league so he won’t be losing any teeth on the ice.”

Bo chuckles at Nora’s concern. He loves to watch her talk about Matt. There is so much love in her eyes. “Just wait Red…he’ll lose a few before he’s ten. I know I did.”

“I know. I remember Asa telling me all those stories about you and Clint and all the trouble you would get into when you were boys. I just never thought they would happen to my son.”

Again they look at each other shyly….both afraid where the conversation was leading again.

“I’m sorry” Nora says apologetically. “I didn’t really mean to go there.”

“Hey…it’s okay. I was the one that wanted Matt stories. He’s a good boy. You should be proud of him.”

Nora looks at Bo with tears in her eyes. Bo just wanted to reach up and kiss all her troubles away. “I am proud of him. And I love him very much. There are times though that I still dream about him being yours and mine. Even though I know it’s not true.”

Bo brushed the tears off her cheek with his thumb. “I know Red…I think about it too. A lot.”

They both stare into the fire for a while. Not really wanting to make conversation…afraid of where it may lead.

Nora looked at Bo as he tried to drift off. “Hey…no sleeping mister. It’s your turn to talk.”

Bo looks Nora directly in her eyes. “I love you Red.”

Nora looks at Bo with surprised look on her face. “What did you just say?”

“I love you Nora Hanen Bucahan.”

She reaches up to caress his face. “That’s just the shock talking.”

Bo places his hand over hers on his cheek as he looks deeply into her eyes. “No it’s not.”

”Then it’s the concussion talking.”

”Wrong again. It’s Beaufort Oglethorpe Buchanan talking. I love you Red. I’m sick and tired of trying to deny it. Of trying to hide it. I know that you may not feel the same way but I am not going to keep quiet any longer. I love you Red…with every fiber of my being.”

Nora got up and starting pacing around the room. She threw some more wood on the fire and poked at it for a while. Bo just watched her with a smile on his face. Nora looked back at Bo and then resumed her pacing. She finally sat down on the couch next to Bo. Bo took her hand in his and entwined his fingers with hers.

“Talk to me Red. What are you thinking?”

Nora turned to look into the eyes of the only man that would ever own her heart. “Why didn’t you saying anything before?”

Bo tightened his hold on Nora’s hand before he started to speak. “I don’t know. Really I don’t. Maybe I thought…hey, we’ve both moved on. We’re both happy in new relationships.” Bo shakes his head. “I haven’t moved on. And I wasn’t happy in any other relationship.”

Nora looks at Bo with tears in her eyes. “Me either. If I was so happy why didn’t I marry Sam? And Troy? I’m still not sure what that was all about. I guess I was just settling because I didn’t think that I could have you.”

“So know that you can have me….?”

Nora leans over and kisses Bo deeply. Her hands go up around his neck as she pulls him closer. The kissing goes on and on and on. Bo finally pulls away and looks into her eyes.

“I love you Red.”

“I love you too Bo. Remember all those times we used to make love all night?”

Bo chuckles and then kisses her again. “I’d do that right now if I weren’t incapacitated.”

“I know. That’s what I want more than anything. But I can wait. I think we’ve waited this long…”

Nora crawled under the blanket with Bo and held him tight The rest of the night was spent telling stories, remembering good times, planning for the future. As the sun came up the next morning both Bo and Nora were tired but exhilarated at the same time. They knew that they would finally be together.

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbying
But as long as you love me so
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

The End
