He walked in his office through his jacket on a chair and sat in his chair defeated. He closed his eyes and thought about the sorry state of events. ‘What was Antonio thinking and why was he protecting Jess – surely Jess didn’t kill Mitch, she couldn’t – or could she?’

“Penny for your thoughts Commish.” Her voice penetrated his reverie as he looked up and saw her smiling at him – she had a great smile and he realized Matthew looked just like her when he smiled, what a great kid he was, and he felt so lucky to be his dad. A hundred emotions were playing across his face.

“Bo?” she tried again to get his attention, wondering what was causing him to look so distressed.

“Yeah, Red?” she was startled by the sudden use of the affectionate nickname but pleased nonetheless.

“What’s on your mind, you look beat?”

“That good huh,” he smiled and motioned for her to sit down. “I talked to Antonio about the witness that gave you the license plate number – he flat out lied to me about it, which means he’s covering for Jess, but why?

“Do you think Jess could have done it? I mean maybe he went after her when he got out, he was sick, he wanted Jessica, maybe it was self defense?”

“Yeah, but then she should have just come to me, I would’ve taken care of her,” he paused running his hand through his hair. She just watched him, realizing how good it was to be working with him so closely again.
“Anyways there is no way Jessica could have done that whole scene by herself, she isn’t strong enough or vengeful enough, the way we found him was planned. Jessica isn’t like that.”

“Do you think Antonio helped her?”

“I don’t know, I just don’t know anymore.” He shook his head. “You know I promised Matthew we would go for ice cream tonite, and that is something I know I can handle, how bout you?”

“What about me?” she asked.

“Want to come with us for ice cream – you know a nice hot fudge sundae, lots of cherries.” She swore he had a twinkle in his eye, something that had been MIA for quite some time, but somehow whenever he was with, talked about or even thought about Matthew there it was and she started falling all over again. “You coming?” he asked grabbing his jacket and heading for the door.

“Why don’t you call Gabrielle, I am sure she would love to join you, I got some paperwork to get finished up here.”

“Gabrielle doesn’t eat ice cream and Matthew needs to see his mom, and I think his mom needs to see him…sooooo” grabbing her hand and pulling her towards the door, “let’s go.”

“You two going somewhere?” Sr. DA Colson demanded standing right outside of Bo’s door.

“Yeah, as a matter of fact we are.” Bo replied guiding Nora past Colson towards the exit.

“When were you planning on telling me about Jessica’s car being at the scene, UNCLE BO?” Nora turned as Colson finished his statement and watched Bo’s reaction. He closed his eyes and clenched his fists and she knew he was gonna lose it, before she thought about what she was doing she reached over and grabbed his hand and squeezed it to get his attention. Sparks flew through him, ‘what the hell’ he thought as he opened his eyes to look at Nora, totally oblivious to Colson and everyone else in the room. Gabby picked just then to walk in the station and upon seeing Nora’s hand on Bo’s started squealing “What do you think you’re doing, NORA?” immediately bringing Bo back to the present.
Colson stepped in front of Bo, “We really don’t have time for this domestic tete – a – tete, we have a homicide investigation to solve.”

Nora stepped towards Daniel, “Come on and I will review the new information with you.” She walked away but couldn’t help herself from looking back at Bo, wondering if he felt the same way when they touched, he was watching her and when she turned he caught her eyes and smiled.

“What was that all about,” Gabby asked glaring at him.

“What?” he asked shrugging headed back towards his office with Gabby in tow.

“You were holding hands, you stood me up for dinner tonite for the 3rd time this week and I walk in to find you holding hands with HER on your way out!” she was pacing in front of his desk. He just stared at her, not even hearing her.

“I told Matthew I would take him for ice cream, Nora was coming with us.”

“Why?” she asked hands on her hips.

“Why,” getting angry “ why, am I taking him for ice cream because he is my son, and I missed out on the first part of his life I’ll be damned if I am gonna miss any more.”

She sensed his anger and backed down, “I know you want to spend time with Matthew Bo, I would like to spend time with him with you, but why were you going with Nora.”

“She’s his mother.” He stated matter – of – factly he was tired of this attitude from Gabby, she was so high maintenance.

“And I’m your lover, or at least I was, not that I can remember the last time we..” Daniel walked in interrupting her, “ I want you to arrest Jessica Buchanan.”

“That’s ridiculous!” Nora seethed.

“Or what? Bo asked.

“I will have your job,” Daniel sneered.

“Let me save you the trouble,” he unclipped his badge, took off his holster handed them both to Daniel and walked out of his office, leaving an irate Gabrielle, a satisfied Daniel and a very worried Nora. Finally, he felt like he could start to breathe again.

Bo got in his jeep and took off for Nora’s, he decided he was going to pick up Matthew and head to the lodge for the weekend. He wanted to spend some time with Matthew, give that rod he bought Matthew a workout! He couldn’t wait to tell him he was his dad, but he didn’t want to rush anything. He also needed to sort out his feeling for Nora, something happened when she touched him, what he wasn’t sure, but something and he needed to deal with it. And eventually he would have to deal with Gabby, but right now as always she was last on his list, and maybe that should tell him something. He pulled out his phone.

“Nora Buchanan here”

“Hey Nora, it’s Bo.”

“Yeah I got that.” He smiled.

“I was thinking about taking Matthew to the lodge for the weekend, wanted to run it by you see if that was ok?”

“Yeah, that’s good.”

“Is there someone there?” she sounded so distant he thought.

“Yes, that’s correct.”

“Oh okay than I’ll talk, I’m fine , don’t worry, Matthew and I are going to the lodge for the weekend so take some time for yourself, don’t, I repeat DON”T work all weekend, as a matter of fact, why don’t you come up Sunday night for supper, bring us some Chinese food, we won’t want anymore fish by then and that way you can bring Matthew home. Sound good.”

She was listening to Bo ramble and started to smile, realizing it was a statement not a question all she could say was “Yep”

“Good then, it’s a date, see ya Red.” He hung up. Nora thought to herself ‘a date.’

“Was that Bo?” the shrill voice pierced her thoughts.

“Gabrielle, go home, I have work to do.” She started reviewing her paperwork.

“Yes and you have a young son at home, seems you only like to spend time with him, when his father is, “ she stared triumphantly at Nora knowing she struck deep.

“Go to hell!” Gabrielle started walking towards the door, Nora grabbed her arm to turn her around, “No, you wait a minute, you will hear me out. I have done nothing but cover for you with Bo, as far as Matthew, Bo is with him tonight, that is why I am still here. How dare you question my skills as a mother. I didn’t see you helping Al….no I am not going there. I wish you and Bo the best, if and this is a big IF that is what Bo wants. Because believe it or not, I care about Bo’s happiness and if you make him happy than I would do nothing, I repeat NOTHING to stand in the way of that. Now get the hell out of my sight,” with that Nora brustled past her and headed to the vending machines. She could feel the tears in her eyes. Not from sadness, but from anger, she was sooo mad. So mad at Gabrielle for daring to speak to her like that, so mad at Bo for walking out on her. ‘What, no walking out on his job he walked out on his job, a job he was so good at that is why she was sooo mad, wasn’t it?’ She needed to go home, she needed a good nights sleep, she needed…………and a small wistful smile came to her lips as she remembered Bo’s last words to her on the phone “Good then, it’s a date, see ya Red.” ‘What is going on here Bo,’ she thought as she climbed the stairs to leave.

“Hey champ, you about ready?” Bo called up the stairs.

“Yep, all set,” Matthew bounded down the steps, gym bag in hand. “Let’s go adventuring.”

Laughing as he tousled his hair, “Let’s go then.”

“Why can’t mom come?” he asked innocently. He loved when his mom and Bo both did things with him, his mom laughed so much around Bo and he really wanted Bo to be his dad.

“Well, tonight and tomorrow are just for us guys, but your mom will come up Sunday and join us. Is that okay?”

“Yeah, does that mean we get to be messy and not make our beds.”

“Absolutely no bed making, and no cleaning up, maybe we will leave it all for your mom to do when she gets there!”

They head for the lodge, Matthew telling Bo all about his day at baseball camp and Bo reveling in being a father. ‘This is how I should end every day, listening to Matthew talk about his day and then curling up in bed with N…..woooo where did that thought come from.’

“Bo, did you hear me?”

“What champ?”

“I’m hungry, can we stop for ice cream on the way?” yep, no doubt about it this kid was his and Nora’s.

“Absolutely, two hot fudge sundaes coming up.”

Nora got home and took a hot shower, she couldn’t believe Bo quit like that, she wanted to talk to him when he called but with Gabby right there, it didn’t seem right, she would talk to him Sunday, it’s not like his resignation was official, he just needed time away from everything, and spending time with Matthew was a great way to deal with what ails you, she should know, it always cured her.

By the time they got to the lodge, Matthew was passed out in the passenger seat. Bo carried him inside laid him down and headed to the bathroom for a hot shower. ‘It’s a date’ he mused as he closed his eyes and enjoyed the sensation of the hot water trailing down his chest. She climbed in the shower with him taking the soap and lathering all over his chest and abdomen, “Hey handsome,” she purred, bringing his lips down to meet hers. “Oh Red,” he groaned.

“It’s a date” she mused aloud as she closed her eyes letting the warm water run down her chest. His hands wrapped around her. “Whatcha thinking about gorgeous?” He leaned in and began kissing her neck. Running his hands up to caress the sides of her breast. “Oh Bo,” she moaned.

His eyes snapped as the cold water started blasting him, “What the….Damn Buchanan, what is wrong with you.” He got out of the shower, dressed, and went to check on Matthew. He looked like Nora when he slept, ‘Hell, he looks like Nora when he does everything.’ He pulled the covers back up over him, kissed his forehead and went to lay down for a long, restless night.

As the cold water hit, she opened her eyes and turned it off. “Damn Buchanan, one touch and see what happens, I need a drink.” She quickly toweled off and headed downstairs for a nightcap, as she passed Matthew’s room she saw a picture of him and Bo, how he looked like his father, she thought, that sparkle in his eyes, ‘how I love that sparkle.’ She fell asleep on the couch for what was to be a long restless night.
