“Hey Bo, can I call mom before we go out fishing?” Matthew headed for the desk where Bo had put his cell phone.

“Don’t you think we should let her sleep in, it’s kinda early, we can call her when we get back.” He smiled at how much Matthew loved his mother it had only been two days but he could tell he missed her even though he was having a great time. Truth be told Bo missed her too, not like that, but he had been working with her everyday, this was the longest they hadn’t talked in forever.

“But if I call her now, she can bring us lunch and dinner,” he pleaded. Matthew took after Nora in the fishing department too, he caught them, but he really didn’t like killing them and eating them was out of the question, so he kept putting the fish in the trash when he thought Bo wasn’t looking and just ate crackers and cheese all day Saturday, well that and a lot of junk food.
Laughing, he told Matthew to go ahead.

He held her close from behind. His hand traveling from her hip to her shoulder, barely touching her skin, causing a desire to begin burning deep in her belly. She knew he wasn’t awake and that made it all the more exhilarating that they were like this even in slumber, she rolled over wanting more. She kissed his lips softly, as he opened his eyes and smiled. “Now that’s some wake up call” he mumbled taking her mouth in his as he rolled them both over so he was on top. The telephone began ringing, he reached for it, “Please leave it,” she begged. “No can do honey, duty calls.” She grabbed his hand before it reached the phone, “I’ll make it worth your while,” she whispered hungrily. “Oh” he raised his eyebrows as her hands traveled under the blanket and her lips rose to meet his. The telephone continued to ring, “Honey, it’s not stopping I gotta get it.” “Fine,” she threw her hands in the air as he rolled to get it. “Buchanan,” The phone continued to ring. Nora woke up drenched in sweat and realized that her phone was ringing, she answered groggily “Hello”

“Good Morning Mommy!” She looked at the clock, ‘5:00 a.m. what the..’

“Mommy, are you there?”

“Yeah, baby I’m here, are you okay? Why are you calling me so early.” ‘Buchanan if this is your idea, I’ll…

“I wanted to call before we went fishing so you could bring us lunch AND dinner, don’t tell Bo, I really like catching the fish but I don’t like eating them.”

“Does Bo know you called?”

“Yes, he told me to wait, but mom, I am really hungry, I neeeed Pizza!” laughing she said she would be there by lunchtime.

“Love you Matthew”

“Love you too mom.” He hung up and ran outside to meet Bo.

Nora looked at the clock, closed her eyes, but opened them as she realized what she was dreaming when the phone rang. “Get a grip, girl, or else today will be hell.” Knowing she wasn’t going to be getting any sleep she started to get ready to head to the lodge.

“So what did your mom say, champ?”

“She said she would bring us pizza for lunch because she didn’t want to eat any fish, she doesn’t like fish you know.” Bo smiled, he knew Matthew was trying to protect his feelings and it was sooo cute.

“Well, let’s get going.” Bo and Matt headed for the boat. Matthew liked to sit still and watch the water waiting for a fish to bite, which amazed Bo to no end, he figured that he would get bored in a hurry, but he was a natural. Just like his old man. How he loved the thought of that. This weekend he really wanted to tell Matthew the truth, he was going to talk to Nora about it tonight. Maybe now would be a good time. Just the three of them at the lodge, a nice private neutral place. Yeah, that was a good idea. Maybe that is just what he would do.

He also had plenty of time to think about Nora, truth be told that is all he thought about the past two nights, the smell of her hair, the light in her eyes, the feel of her body next to his…

“Bo, Bo you got a bite,” Matthew hollered at him.

Awakened from his reverie he began reeling in the fish, a nice sized trout. “What do you think Matthew – keep him or let him loose?”

“He’s bigger than the one I caught, isn’t he Bo?”

“You think so?”

“Yeah,” he was disheartened. Bo couldn’t stand the look of despair on the kids face, his kids face.

“You know what, I’m gonna let him loose since we aren’t gonna eat any more fish, so technically you caught the biggest fish of the trip, how’s that?” Matthew smiled.
“What was that noise?” Matthew asked. Bo looked at his watch and noticed it was nearly 1:00. “I bet that is your mom with our….”

“Pizza!” they shouted in unison.

After lunch Matthew fell asleep on the couch and Nora and Bo walked outside.

“So, dad, how was it?” she looked at him searching for a sign of how it went. Matthew talked all during lunch, about what a great time he had and how much fun it was and how big the fish he caught was, and Bo just sat there smiling. He looked happy, he looked at peace.

“It was great, you know Nora I was thinking, maybe, if you think the time is right..” he stumbled to get the words out.

“We should tell him tonight.” She finished his thoughts.
“This place is great, just the three of us, no interruptions, a neutral field so they say.”

“Thanks.” He took her hand and pulled it to his lips to kiss it. “Thank you so much for that little boy. I didn’t know I could love someone like that. I love him so much and I..” he stopped realizing what he was about to say, not sure of where it came from, but knowing it was how he felt, but how did she feel. He couldn’t lose her again, he wouldn’t.

“What Bo?” she needed to know if he was feeling what she was, what she had ever since she took his hand at the station. Was he being tortured of memories of them, like she was.

Deciding to change the subject, “So did you arrest Jess?”

“Colson did, I told him he was wrong to do it, but he doesn’t listen, he is the SENIOR ADA you know.” He liked to see her feathers ruffled she was so beautiful when she was fired up. “So you are coming back to work right? I mean you just needed time away and you got that, but..” He held up his hand.

“Nora, I don’t want to go back, I need a break, I need time, time to find myself, time to spend with my son, time to spend with.. “ he stopped and looked at her. Was that a tear in her eye.

“To spend with Gabrielle,” she finished for him. “That’s a good idea, that should really help your relationship.”

“Nora,"

“You know what, I think I want to take a walk, it’s beautiful out here.” And with that she walked towards the lake.

“Nora, wait..” she kept walking, he didn’t want to leave Matthew alone in the lodge so he sat there and watched her disappear. ‘Dammit Buchanan how hard is it to tell her you want to spend time with her.’ The door opened and rubbing his eyes Matthew walked out to sit on Bo’s lap.

“Hey champ.”

“Where’s mommy?”

“She went for a walk.”

“Oh”

“You okay?”

“Yeah, but I wanted us all to watch a movie together.” He looked upset.

“Matthew, what’s wrong? Do you feel all right?” He reached up to feel his forehead. He didn’t seem hot, but this was not the same little boy that couldn’t stop giggling during lunch. “Talk to me champ.”

“I had a bad dream, “

“Wanna tell me about it?”

“I couldn’t find mom and I went looking for you, and everywhere I looked for you Gabrielle kept saying, he’s busy honey, he’s busy honey. I just want my mom, my dad and me to be a family again” he started crying. “It’s not fair, all my friends have mom’s AND dad’s. I want that too, is that wrong?” Bo’s heart was breaking for his son. He wrapped his arms around him and let the boy sob into his chest.

“It’s okay Matthew, I’m right here and I’m never going anywhere. And I am NEVER too busy for you, shhh, it’s okay son, I’m right here.” Nora walked up on Bo and Matthew as he was comforting Matthew she wasn’t sure what was wrong. Neither Bo or Matthew noticed her and she didn’t want to interrupt this tender moment between father and son, yet……she couldn’t stand to be on the outside looking in, this was her family too, wasn’t it?

She stepped closer and Bo looked up. He had tears in his eyes. She could see the pain and without thinking reached to wipe the tear from his cheek. As she touched him, he jumped back startling Matthew. He saw his mother and the moment was broken.

“Mommy, your back.” He ran to her wrapping his arms around hers hugging her as tightly as he could.

“Hey, baby, its okay I’m right here, and I’m not going anywhere. Come sit down with me.” She moved to the chair beside Bo and pulled Matthew up onto her lap.

“Don’t leave me mommy, I don’t want to be alone. Please don’t leave.” He closed his eyes as she held him to her chest. She looked at Bo, trying to understand why her son was in so much pain. But all she saw there was Bo’s pain and all she wanted to do was hold him, much like she was holding Matthew and take away his pain, but that wasn’t her place anymore, or was it?

Bo sat there watching her comforting Matthew and he was falling hard and fast for the women who owned his soul once upon a time, and he was realizing she had never given it back, and he was glad, because he wanted her to keep it forever, but how could he tell her that.

He noticed the hair in Matthew’s eyes and went to remove it, Nora noticed it at the same time and theirs hands touched, she pulled hers back as if burned, but Bo grabbed it, and intertwined his fingers with hers as their eyes locked. All he could do was stare at her as she stared back. All they heard was Matthew’s breathing and for both of them it was the most beautiful sound in the world. And for a moment life was perfect. It was interrupted by the slamming of a car door and Gabby squealing “what the hell is going on here?”

Matthew woke up and after seeing Gabrielle, “Mom, I want to go home, can we go home now please?” he was pleading, Nora wanted, no she needed to talk to Bo, but now that wasn’t going to happen. ‘Will there ever be another chance for us?’ she wondered watching him lead Gabrielle away from the house, away from Matthew, his voice was raised and she knew he was mad. Nora and Matthew went in the house to get their things together.
