The Long Road Home - Part 1

Nora paced back and forth in the hospital’s sunroom, her arms wrapped around her waist, deep in thought. Matthew had been in surgery for more than four hours. She didn’t notice Bo entering the room until she smelled the scent of coffee in the air.

“Hey, I thought you might need this” he said handing her the hot cup. “How are you?” he asked, a look of concern flickering and then turning into a small smile.

“I can’t believe that you’re asking how I am Bo. You and I are in this together. How are you holding up?” Nora asked, absentmindedly placing her free hand on his arm.

“I’m ok Nora, as long as Matthew’s surgery is a success I’ll be alright, we all will. I think that we have to trust in the decisions that we’ve made and hopefully it will all turn out for the best. It’s out of our hands now, ya know?”

“I know Bo but I’m still worried sick, I mean are you sure that we made the right decision? Did we just cave under pressure?” Nora dropped her hand and walked toward the large windows.

“Hey, listen to me. We did not ‘cave under pressure’. We actually listened to our son and for the first time since the accident we heard him. I know you are worried and so am I but Nora we have to give this a chance. We were stuck between a rock and a hard place here. We could either play it safe and keep Matthew in that chair and risk his sanity or we could rely on an experienced physician and hopefully get a whole, happy Matthew back in return.” Bo walked over and turned Nora to face him.

Tears ran down her cheeks as Bo gently wiped them away. “Please don’t cry Red, please”.

At the sound of the familiar nickname Nora shivered, “you haven’t called me that in forever”.

“I know, I guess it just slipped out. Old habits, ya know?” Bo smiled as he pulled her in to an embrace.

They were interrupted by the sound of Clint clearing his throat.
“Excuse me, but is Matthew out of surgery yet?” He crossed the room and stood next his new wife and his brother eyeing both suspiciously.
Nora wiped the remaining tears from her own cheeks and looked at Clint with a half smile. “We haven’t heard anything yet. They’ve been in there for about four hours but Dr. Evans said it could take up to six to finish up. It’s been torture on both of us.”

“Well I’m going to find something out for you! This is ridiculous; they should have sent someone out to tell you something.” Clint turned to leave but Bo’s hand caught his arm.

“Clint, please let them do their jobs and finish this operation. They were clear with us at the start that no one could leave the area once they started. There is just too much risk for infection coming in and out of the surgical area.” Bo went to sit on the couch, leaving Nora and Clint alone.

“So when did you get back from London? You never called or I missed your call? I have no idea where my cell phone is.” Nora started going through her purse, happy to have something to do to keep her mind busy.

“I just got off the plane and came straight here.” He turned Nora’s face upward to look at his. “Nora, listen, you don’t have to be brave with me. I know how hard it is to stand around here in this damn hospital and wait for news that you’re not sure will be good or bad. I’m sorry about trying to go get someone but I have to feel useful. I’m no good at sitting around all day and waiting.”

Bo stood up hearing the last statement. “Is that what you think I’m doing big brother? Do you think I wouldn’t find out something about MY son if I could? Man Clint from the beginning of this you have just taken control and I for one am sick of it. Nora and I have been going through hell here and you just swoop in off a plane and try to save the day. Why not just be here for your wife? Why not just hold her and tell her that you’ll be here good news or bad?”

“Bo! Please this isn’t helping anything.” Nora shouted, emotion rising in her voice.

“I’m sorry Nora, you know what, I’m gonna go to the chapel for awhile and I’ll be back. Call me if they come out.” Bo turned and stormed out of the room.

Clint turned toward Nora, “wow I guess I know how he feels. I’m sorry if he upset you.”

“Clint, he’s your brother, you should be more concerned about him than me. I’m glad you’re here and I know going to London couldn’t be avoided. You’re here now and that’s all that matters.” Nora pulled him into a hug as he put his arms around her.

Clint pulled back looking at Nora. “I’m glad that I’m here too, but…”

“But, but what?” Nora asked concern on her face.

“I can’t stay long. I have to be back in London tomorrow evening for a BE function.” Nora pulled away and once again turned toward the window. “Nora please don’t be angry. I want to be here more than you know but the company needs its CEO to be there for these things and since that tragedy with Nash and Dorian pulling her stunt I’ve been trying hard to rebuild our image.”

Nora stood there, a million feelings going through her mind. She felt alone and also like she should feel angry, but she couldn’t. She just felt alone and also sad. Her son was more than likely fighting for his life and his father was in a hospital chapel doing the only thing he could, praying. Why would she be angry, how could she even allow herself to think about anything but her son right now? She shook her head and turned around to face Clint.

“You are angry aren’t you?” Clint asked as he pulled her closer.

She shook her head and forced a smile, “No actually I’m not, just call me and let me know you got back to London safely. I’ll fill you in on Matthew’s condition when you call.”

“You’re sure?” He asked, more suspicious this time.

“Positive. Listen, you have things to do and I have to be here for Matthew. I cannot risk being upset or angry at a time like this. Go to London, but come back soon.” She kissed him lightly on the lips.

He smiled at her and gently rubbed her cheek. “Nora, you’re the best. I will call you and please tell Bo that I’m sorry I over stepped today. I just want to make it better for everyone.”

“I will tell him, now go; you don’t want to be late getting back to the airport.”

“I love you Nora” Clint said quickly kissing her again.

“You too, I’ll see you soon.” She waved as he walked out of the room and past the nurse’s station.

She walked over to the sitting area and sat down putting her head in her hands, alone, that is exactly how she felt until she felt the space next her give as someone else sat down. She looked up and smiled. “You done being so angry?” she asked as Bo took her hand in his.

He smiled sadly, “yeah I really put my foot in it didn’t I? Where is my brother anyway? I really should apologize.”

“He’s gone, had to get back to London. He said he was sorry too.”
Nora said putting her hand over Bo’s. “We really need to keep our thoughts positive here, for Matthew.”

“You couldn’t be more right about that..”

Bo and Nora turned at the sound of people coming into the room. They stood to see an exhausted Dr. Evans and his team filing in behind him. Bo squeezed Nora’s hand and she returned the gesture. Bo was the first to speak.

“Well how’s our boy?”
