Mission Accomplished (A short story)

Bo sat on the couch squeezing his head between his hands. When he stopped squeezing, the intense throbbing returned, and his hands instinctively returned to his temples and resumed the pressure.

“Drink this” Asa shoved the rock glass into his middle son’s hand, “if I told ya once, I told ya thousand times, but ya just don’t listen…not to yer Pa…nope…just ignore old Asa…”

“Pa” Bo gulped down the harsh liquid and handed the glass back for a refill, “I already told you, you were right…what more do you want from me?”

Asa refilled the glass, “I want you to get some sense in that slab of meat on yer shoulders.”

“That’s great, but what do I do in the mean time?” Bo quickly downed the second whiskey.

“You hang and listen to your old man.”

Nigel opened the doors to the den. “Sir…”

“Yes Nigel…I know…”

“Alright Asa…what was so damn important that you called me…” Nora stopped in her tracks and looked at Bo as he sat on the couch. “Bo….”

“Seems my son here, in his ever pressing need to show me up, has gotten himself into a bit of a bind…and I couldn’t think of anyone better to legally advise him.” Asa smiled and he himself finished off a glass of whiskey.

Nora stood looking at Bo. He couldn’t look up at her. He sighed deeply, “Pa….”

“Don’t Pa me, boy…seems I’ve let you try to handle your own life long enough…now I gotta step in before you end up costing me my future…”

“What’s going on Asa?” Nora questioned.

“Well…you know how that witch Gabrielle Medina tried to take me for all I was worth?”

“Yes” Nora answered, “I seem to recall that episode…but we got the union annulled.”

“Yes…but my son here, in a act of drunken spite…married her.” Asa watched Nora. She closed her eyes briefly. She squeezed the inner corners of her eyes trying to block out what she had just heard. “And now…the only way Medina will let him out of it….is with my millions! That good for nothing….”

“That’s enough Pa!” Bo stood up and faced his father, “I am more than sure that Nora has plenty of other things to do in her life than take care of me!” he slammed the empty rock glass down on the desk.

“It’s ok Bo” Nora assured him, “I’d love to help you.” Nora smiled.

“See there….best damn lawyer in town is willing to help you…don’t screw this up again, boy.” Asa warned as he walked out of the den and closed the door behind him.

Nora looked at the closed door, then back at Bo. She walked around the couch, running her hand along the back of it. She took in the scents and sights of the den. She remembered the last time she was there….for the reading of Asa’s will. How broken Bo was. How she wanted nothing more than to give him a hug and make all his pain vanish. Now here she was, same room, same man, same pain in his face. Again, she wanted to hug him, but the fear of his reaction was keeping her at a distance. Its not as if he had wanted her in his life…he had been cold and distant towards her for some time. A hug from her was probably the last thing he wanted.

She placed her brief case on the chair and reached in for her legal pad and pen, “So…wanna tell me the details?” she asked in a non threatening voice.

“I went out, I got drunk, I married Gabrielle…simple as that.” He answered curtly.

“I see” Nora said. She scribbled something on the pad. “Any kind of pre nup?”

“I don’t think so, I dunno…maybe…” Bo looked out the window, “this is stupid…I feel like I am wasting your time….like Asa’s wasting your time…you really can go if you want…I can get another attorney…”

“No, really Bo…its ok…” she moved her case and sat down. She looked at him as his walked behind the desk.

The room was quite. After about ten minutes, Bo looked up at Nora.

“Why the hell did you have to come here?” he questioned abruptly, with a confused, pained look on his face.

Nora stood up and placed her pad in her brief case, “I am sorry Mr. Buchanan…your father was under the impression you needed an attorney…” she picked up her case and headed towards the door.

Bo watched her. As she touched the door handle, she felt a hand on her shoulder, Bo. She closed her eyes as she felt sparks ignite in her chest. Her breath caught in her throat.

“Nothing in my life works” he said without emotion. Nora slowly turned and looked down. “Nothing has worked since I left you.” He barely whispered.

Nora slowly raised her head. She looked in his eyes. “Bo…” He placed his hand behind her neck and drew her lips to his. The kiss was intense, right off the bat. Nora dropped her brief case and wrapped her arms around Bo as he did the same to her. They stayed locked in their passionate embrace for some time. Hands caressing shoulders and backs, running through hair, pulling each other further into the other. Lips pressing together in a lost urgency, desperate to erase time, desperate to erase pain. As sudden as it began it ended.

“Nora…I am so sorry…I didn’t mean….” Bo watched as Nora lightly touched her mouth with her fingers, as if to feel if what had happened had really happened to her, to her lips. She wrapped her arms around herself, holding on to a feeling she had longed to have again.

“No Bo…don’t apologize….it’s ok…” Nora nodded as she quietly assured him. “Really…but… think I should go…”

“Please don’t” was all he could say as he caught her arm.

“Bo…I…I just think…” Nora’s head was spinning, she so wanted to be back in his arms, she wanted the kissing to continue, she wanted it to lead to what their passion had always led to, but this was a different time, a different age. Bo was no longer hers, she had no right to think such things.

“Don’t think…” his eyes begged, “help me…help me fix my life, help me realize that it can be good again…that I can be happy…that I can have love. Help me Nora.” He gently touched her cheek.

A single tear ran down her cheek. He touched his lightly with his index finger. For the first time in too many years, Bo saw the pain she too was carrying. “I love you Nora. I simply and honestly love you.” He took her in his arms and held her.

Asa smiled on the other side of the door. Mission accomplished.

The end.
