Moments in Time

“Hurry up Matthew! The bus is coming!”

“I’m coming, Mom!” Matthew yelled as he jumped down the stairs, taking two at a time.

Nora quickly placed his backpack on his shoulder and kissed him on the cheek as she pushed him toward the door.

“Have a great day, sweetie,” she said, watching him run down the sidewalk toward the waiting bus.

“I love you, Mom!” Matthew called back as he waved excitedly and stepped onto the bus.

“I love you!” she called back as the bus door closed. Nora slowly lowered her waving hand and placed it near her heart. The love she felt for Matthew at times was so overwhelming but since finding out that he was Bo’s son she could hardly look at the child without being overcome with emotion.

She sighed deeply and watched the bus turn the corner and then stepped back inside her home. She looked quickly at her watch and realized that he would be there soon and she had a lot of things to do.

A short time later, Bo pulled into the driveway and glanced down at his own watch. He shook his head with frustration. He’d been waiting all morning for the time to pass and it just seemed to stand still. Nora called a couple of nights earlier and invited him over to her home. She wouldn’t elaborate on the reason but the anticipation he felt had him arriving at her home almost 30 minutes before he was expected.

He left the house over an hour earlier, wanting desperately to get away from Gabrielle. Her clinginess was beginning to really annoy him and he wasn’t sure what to do about it.

He sat in his car, staring at her front door and then glancing again at his watch. “Oh hell,” he said with frustration as he reached and opened the car door. “So I’m a little early. She won’t mind,” he said to himself as he approached the front door and rang the bell.

Nora panicked and couldn’t believe the doorbell was ringing so early. Had her watch stopped? She pushed through the kitchen door and saw Bo’s smiling face through the window. Her heart thumped in her chest as she quickly glanced around the room and smiled as she struggled not to run to the door.

“Hi Bo!” she said, stepping back and waving him inside with her arm.

“I know I’m early…” he said nervously as he stepped past her and was delighted by the soft scent of her perfume. “I hope you don’t mind?”

“Of course not,” she said, closing the door and pulling down a makeshift blind over the windows in the door. The room immediately darkened and caused Bo to turn around in confusion. Nora smiled and nonchalantly took his hand, leading him the rest of the way into the room.

“Forget to pay your electric bill?” he asked with a slight smile, stepping down into the living room.

“No….” she said, leading him over to the sofa. “It’s part of that surprise I mentioned earlier.”

“You’ve moved the furniture around,” he noticed, still holding onto her hand and glancing around the darkened room.

“Just for today,” she said,. “Have a seat,” she motioned toward the sofa, which was now turned toward the far wall.

“What are you up to?” he asked, taking the seat she offered.

“I just have a small surprise for you that is long overdue,” she said with a smile, patting him on the shoulder as she stepped around the back of the sofa. Bo began to slightly turn to follow her movement and she stopped. “No, no, no…” she said, holding up her finger. “You keep facing the wall, I’ll be right back.”

Bo turned back around with a smile, “What are you up to?” he asked, his curiosity completely peaked.

“You’ll see in just a minute. Be patient,” she said, disappearing through the kitchen doorway.

Bo leaned back into the sofa and sighed. He always felt so comfortable around Nora, there was no need to pretend, their feelings of friendship were genuine. A smile slipped across his lips as he heard the door to the kitchen swing open.

Just as he was about to turn again she scolded. “Don’t even think about it, Buchanan,” she said, setting something heavy onto the table just behind him.

“OK, I’ll admit it… I’m totally stumped here, Red…”

Nora smiled at the sound of her nickname coming from Bo, “I’m just about ready. Just a couple more seconds…”

“When can I turn around?” he asked, enjoying the softness of her sofa.

“You don’t need to turn around,” she said, joining him on the sofa, sitting only a few inches away from him.

Bo turned to look at her, seeing the smile of achievement on her face, “Well, Red, this is nice, but…”

She smiled warmly, “Just look straight ahead,” she said, reaching briefly behind him and turning a switch. The dark wall across the room began to sputter with light. Bo turned briefly, the puzzlement showing on his face. Just as he was about to enquire, Nora placed her finger to her lips and directed his attention to the wall.

When Bo turned to see what was being projected he saw Matthew as a small baby filling the wall. His eyes immediately watered and his gaze was transfixed. This was his son, only days old. Sam had obviously filmed the scenes he was watching, but he didn’t let the anger he felt toward him color this moment. Nora looked incredibly beautiful as she rested in the hospital bed holding their son. He couldn’t believe he was actually reliving these moments—moments he missed. He remembered how worried he was for Matthew, knowing he spent so much time in the ICU.

The next clip that appeared had Matthew laying on the floor and rolling from one side to another,. Then Bo got to experience Matthew sitting up and seeing images of his first teeth. Bo occasionally reached up to wipe away a tear, but he never took his eyes off the wall. The room was so quiet and Nora struggled with her own emotions as she glanced from father to son.

Bo saw Matthew dig his hands into his first birthday cake, then blow the candles out of his second birthday cake, his third, his fourth… It was almost overwhelming seeing all the moments he had missed out on over the last 5 years. Bo laughed out loud as he watched Matthew trying to learn to ride his first bike. Oh how he wished he had been there to cheer him on in person…

The time passed and several hours later the video ended. Bo continued to stare at the white square being projected onto the wall. He wasn’t sure when it happened but sometime during the movie, Nora slid her hand into Bo’s. It seemed so natural and it never occurred to him to pull his hand away.

Nora sighed with satisfaction and a smile and withdrew her hand from Bo’s as she reached behind them and stopped the video and projector.
The room returned to its original darkness. Bo’s eyes tried to adjust to the darkness and the moisture flooding his eyes.

Nora hit the “eject” button and withdrew the tape, slowly presenting it to Bo. “Happy Father’s Day” she said quietly, giving him time to absorb all he’d seen over the past hours.

Bo looked up from his lap and saw the video being presented to him.
“Nora…” he started to say and discovered that his voice revealed the emotions he was struggling for so long to control. He coughed slightly and tried again. “I don’t know what to say…”

Nora smiled proudly, “You don’t have to say anything,” again reaching the video to him.

Bo took the video from her hand.

“I’m just sorry you didn’t experience all of Matthew’s firsts first-hand.

Bo held the video tightly in his hand and looked into her eyes. He could see the glimmer of tears, just as a tear broke free and rolled down her cheek. Bo instinctively reached up and wiped away the tear with his finger.

“This is the most amazing gift…”

“I’m so glad you like it, Bo. I was worried it might be too much for you to take in…”

“I’ve never received a gift that has meant more…” he said, leaning over and placing a heartfelt kiss on her cheek.

Nora sighed and smiled as Bo sat back and looked down at the tape, taking it and holding it to his heart. “The best gift ever, Red,” he said again. “So many memorable moments in Matthew’s life…”

Nora reached up and caressed his face, “All the other moments you’ll be there to share with him,” she said softly, keeping her hand on his face as he turned to look into her eyes.

“All the other moments in Matthew’s life WE’LL share together,” he said just as quietly, leaning his head into her hand as one final tear fell down her cheek.

The End.
