Nine Sharp (a short story)

The invitation said nine sharp, look hot. Nora smiled as she recalled the words on the simple piece of paper left on her front door.

She craned her neck for the umpteenth time watching for Troy to enter Rodi's. The waitress came over to her table for the third time.

Nora looked up at the woman, "I suppose I should order something, you probably think I'm loitering!" she laughed at her own attempt at humor. The waitress smiled politely and shrugged her shoulders. "I'll just have a club soda with lime twist."

The waitress walked off. The lights dimmed and Reggie walked onto the small stage. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our weekly Karaoke Night at Rodi's" there were a few intermittent applause, but most of the audience continued their small talk. "Tonight we have a special treat, all the way from" Reggie looks down at the index card he was holding, then looked back off stage, "all the way from the fourth precinct, the Totally Righteous Brothers." He raised an eyebrow and start to clap.

Nora looked at the stage and clapped. She didn't know what to expect, "The Totally Righteous Brothers" she said to herself, "hmmmm"
She blinked her eyes in disbelief at what she saw next. Hank walked onto the stage dressed in black jeans, black boots, black shirt and his black bike jacket. Oh, and not to mention the black shades. Nora giggled to herself. "What the heck is he doing?" The music began to play, the Righteous Brothers old tune, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" Hank stood with his arms folded in front of him, microphone in hand, waiting for his cue.

Then the singing started, it wasn't Hank. "You never close your eyes any more when I kiss your lips And there’s no tenderness like before in your fingertips"

"Oh no." Nora said out loud to herself, "it couldn't be."

The singing continued, "You’re tryin’ hard not to show it, baby, But baby, baby I know it" and then he walked out on the small stage. Bo. Nora's breath caught in her throat. She instinctively brought her hand to her mouth.

Hank chimed in with a deep baritone rendition, "You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’ Ohh that lovin’ feelin’ You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’, Now its gone, gone, gone whoaohoh"

They strutted around the stage to the music. Bo picked up his part of the song, " Now there’s no welcome look in your eyes when I reach for you, You’ve started to criticize every little thing that I do, It makes me just feel like crying, baby Cos baby, something beautiful’s dyin’"

They hit the duet part together as Nora looked on in total disbelief, " You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’ Ohh that lovin’ feelin’ You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’, Now its gone, gone, gone whoaohoh"

She didn't know whether to laugh or to cry. She sat watching Bo sing his heart out, Hank his back up and the sight of them both, completely donning the black biker look, it just made her heart skip a beat. She was over come with the desire to run up to Bo and kiss him for all it was worth. Then he did something she was not expecting. He made his way off the stage and to her table. He took her hand and dropped to his knee. Hank stood behind him.

"Baby baby, I’d get down on my knees for you If you would only love me, like you used to do We had a love , a love, a love you don’t find every day"

Hank sang the don'ts, "So don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t, baby don’t throw it away."

Bo then stood up and he and Hank sang their way back to the stage and finished up the song, " I need your love, I need your love So bring it on back, bring it back Bring back that lovin’ feelin’, o-o-oh that lovin’ feelin’ Bring back that lovin’ feelin’ Cos its gone, gone, gone And I can’t go on no more, Bring it on back now, hey baby I beg you baby, oh baby Bring it on back, bring it on back Bring it, bring it, bring it back Bring back that lovin’ feelin’ Ohh that lovin’ feelin’......"

Nora smiled as the music faded. The audience clapped as the Totally Righteous Brothers took their bows. She realized she'd been set up. There was no Troy going to show up. There was only her, her best friend Hank and the love of her life, singing his heart out, trying to recapture a feeling that they both knew was there, just buried under years of emotional garbage.

Bo took a step off the stage towards Nora's table, Hank right behind him. Nora didn't even wait for him to make it to his table. She flew to the stage and was in his arms before he realized what was going on.
"I love you Buchanan." She smiled and kissed him.

"I am assuming that loving feeling is back" Hank said as he put a hand on each of their shoulders.

Bo stopped kissing her long enough to answer Hank, "I owe you" he smiled as Nora clung to him.

"Don't mention it. " Hank walked over to the bar to leave them alone.

"I love you Nora...it's killing me not being with you. It's killing me even more to know you're with McIver. I want you back, exclusively."

"Will you sing to me again?" Nora asked as she traced his lips with her finger.

"Anything you want, as long as its in private, no Hank, no audience and no McIver." Bo insisted.

"McIver who?" Nora said as she smiled and kissed him.
