- For Old Time's
Sake
-
- She sat alone in Rodi's with
a school-girl smile on her face. She was reading the note for
what seemed like the hundredth time. It had been slid under her
office door while she was at work this afternoon, and her mind
had been like slush ever since. It simply said "Rodi's,
8:00 tonight, be there or be square. You won't regret it."
-
- The sound of the change falling
into the juke box broke her concentration. And that familiar
tune made her smile even more. As "My Girl" echoed
from the speakers, a voice spoke from behind. "Well, Red,
what are you doing here all alone?"
-
- "Bo, I uh, umm, I'm
meeting my husband" Nora answered.
-
- Bo extending his hand to
Nora. "Well, we're the only one's here, and I don't think
your husband would mind you dancing with an old friend, would
he?"
-
- Uncomfortable, Nora said
"well, one dance, for old times sake." Palms sweating,
Nora took Bo's hand, and let him lead her to the dance floor.
No words were spoken, just two people lost in the music which
ended all too soon for both.
-
- When the song was over, Bo
held her hand and lead her back to her table. "Mind if I
have a drink with you, you know, while you're waiting for your
husband?"
-
- As Nora looked into those
twinkling blue eyes, her stomach doing back flips, she said "sure,
a drink for old times sake." How could this man that she
had known for so long still make her feel so giddy and uncomfortable
and embarrassed and silly and happy all at the same time. It
had been so long, but all those feelings were still inside her.
She smiled awkwardly back at Bo.
-
- They made small talk, their
eyes never leaving each other. It was just so comfortable being
together. A few drinks and lots of laughs and conversation later,
Bo said, "well, it looks like you've been stood up."
-
- "Ya think" Nora
said laughing, and knocking her beer and spilling it all over
Bo's hand. Eyes locked onto his, Nora picks up his hand and begins
cleaning off the mess. She brought his hand slowly to her mouth,
and kissed his wet finger tips.
-
- Bo, pulling his hand back
"Nora, this isn't a good idea. You're married now."
Touching her wedding ring, "I wouldn't want your husband
to get the wrong idea."
-
- "I'm sorry, Bo. I didn't
mean anything. It's just, I've got all these emotions running
ramped in my head and in my heart."
-
- Bo broke the uneasiness,
"how about one more dance, and I'll say good night."
-
- With tears forming in her
eyes and a small smile on her face, she offered "one dance."
How could he still have this hold on her, after all this time.
-
- "When a Man Loves a
Woman" began, and they both began laughing. "Bo Buchanan,
after all these years together, you still make my heart go wild
and you never cease to amaze me."
-
- Picking her up and twirling
her around, "ditto, Mrs. Buchanan. And just wait to see
what I have in store for you tomorrow night!"
-
- Nora, acting shocked, "and
what do you think my husband's going to say. You know, he'll
be suspicious if I'm gone again tomorrow."
-
- Bo, looking deeply into Nora
eyes, holding her as close as he could while the music played,
simply replied "you're husband is the luckiest man in the
world, and would be a fool to ever let you go."
-
- "And Commish, your wife
is the luckiest woman alive. Do you really know how totally happy
you make me? Do you realize that I could never live without you?"
-
- Bo, laughing, "that's
what I'm counting on Red! It always feels like the first time
with you, Nora. First date, first touch, first laugh... you are
definitely my first true love."
-
- Teasingly, Nora replied,
"and I'd better be the last."
-
- As the song ended, their
date did not. Bo and Nora went home, and continued what they
had begun several years earlier, even before they said "I
do." And it was always just as good as it had been the first,
second, third, fourth.......so many that they had lost count.
And it would never be just "for old time's sake". It
was for life!
