Bo glanced out of the window as he took his usual route home from work. It wasn’t the shortest route, as a matter of fact, it added 30 minutes to his commute time, but driving past Nora’s house every evening had become his ritual over the past several years. Sometimes, as he slowed, he’d catch a glimpse of her passing a window, his heart would ache as he’d continue down the road.

Tonight he drove down the street, later than usual, and in no hurry to get home to more of Gabrielle’s lies. As he neared her home, his eyes caught the small figure sitting on the curb, tossing rocks into the street.

Bo frowned as he slowed, driving past Matthew, who never bothered to look up. Bo pulled the car to the side of the road and stepped out onto the street. He watched Matthew wipe at a tear, again tossing another stone into the street, watching it skip across the pavement.

“Hey Matthew,” Bo said as he stepped close.

Matthew glanced up, the tear tracks staining his soiled face. He saw Bo and turned his head down, “Hi Uncle Bo,” he said quietly, reaching to grab another handful of rocks.

“What’s wrong, Buddy?” Bo asked as he joined Matthew on the curb.

Matthew wiped at his tears, “It’s my Mom,” he said, his little chin quivering.

“What about your Mom?” Bo asked, his concern growing.

“I think she’s sick…” Matthew’s tears continued to fall.

“Why do you say that?” Bo asked as his arm went around Matthew to pull him close.

“Because she keeps seeing Dr. Troy…” Matthew struggles to talk as his crying breaks up his voice. “I heard her talking to herself and she said she hoped Dr. Troy could help her with the pain…”

Bo sighed with relief having heard through the Station’s rumor mill that Nora and Troy were seeing each other. It was hearing this rumor that made him all the more determined to continue his ride-bys.

“Matthew?” Bo began quietly. “I’m sure your Mom is fine…”

“No…” Matthew shook his head. “I heard her crying last night. I think she’s hurting somewhere.”

“Really??” Bo looked surprised when he heard she was crying. “Is your Mom home now?” he asked.

“No, Mary Ann’s still here. I don’t want my Mom to be sick, Uncle Bo…” he started crying harder.

“Listen Matthew,” he said sternly, putting his finger under Matthew’s face. “I won’t let anything happen to your Mom, OK?” he stared at Matthew.

“You promise?” Matthew asked Bo as he wiped his runny nose on his shirtsleeve.

“I promise,” he crosses his heart and Matthew gives him a little smile.

“Now let’s go inside and wait for your Mom to get home.” Bo rises and reaches out his hand. Matthew looks at it a moment and then drops his handful of rocks as he places his tiny hand into Bo’s.

Mary Ann was surprised to see Bo come into the house with Matthew, but her smile grew watching Bo comfort the little boy. Bo convinced her he would stay with Matthew until Nora arrived and she packed up her things and left for home.

Matthew took Bo upstairs and they played video games. Bo was glad to see a smile back on his face, but Matthew’s comment about Nora crying had him worried. An hour or so later, they heard the front door shut and Nora’s voice filled the house as she called for her ‘little man.’

The smile that spread across Matthew’s face as he jumped up, made Bo smile. “Mom’s HERE!” Matthew said as he didn’t hesitate running from the room.

Nora placed her briefcase on the sofa, looking up at the stairs, listening to Matthew’s feet as he hurried to greet her. Her smile grew as she stepped to the end of the stairs and caught him in mid air to give him his usual evening hug and kiss. His arms grabbed her around the neck and she held him tightly, kissing his face over and over as she made her way to the sofa.

She plopped down on the sofa, taking Matthew with her, and brushed back his hair from his face.

“How’s my man?” she asked with a big smile.

“Good!” Matthew said, relishing the beauty of his Mother’s face.

“Did you have a good day?” she asked and Matthew nodded with a big smile.

Matthew quickly turned serious and he took a deep breath, “Why were you crying last night, Mommy?” he asked, startling her with his quick change.

“I’d like to know the answer to that one myself,” Bo’s voice came from behind them, and Nora jerked around, surprised to see him standing on the stairway.

“Bo??” she said, unable to hide her shock. She quickly stood, placing Matthew on the sofa.

Bo took the last few steps down the stairs, their eyes never leaving one another.

“What are you doing here?” she quietly asked, her pulse racing.

“Oh yeah, Mom! Uncle Bo’s here!” Matthew happily said as he looked over the back of the sofa.

“Thanks Matthew,” she seemed slightly annoyed. “I see that now.”

“Are you going to answer your Son’s question?” Bo asked, now standing only a few feet away from her.

“Um….” She struggled to come up with something, glancing between Bo’s handsome face and the expectant face of her son, “You know what?” she said, smiling and taking a deep breath. “It’s time for YOU to wash up for dinner,” she said, stooping down to speak into Matthew’s face.

“Ahh… Mom…” he moaned as she mussed his hair.

“No ‘Ahh… Mom’s’ Upstairs you!”

Matthew frowned as he climbed down from the sofa and stomped to the stairs. “Are you cooking?” he asked.

“No…” Nora hissed, glaring at the smiling expression on Bo’s face.

“We’ll have something delivered.”

“Good!” Matthew said as he went up the stairs.

“Would you like hamburgers or pizza for dinner,” she asked.

“Pizza!” he replied with a big smile. “You’re not leaving are you Uncle Bo?”

“No Buddy, I’m not leaving.”

Why did that sound like a challenge to Nora as she raised her eyebrows in mocked surprise, Bo’s expression never changed. Matthew continued up the stairs, Bo and Nora continued to just take each other in.

Bo glanced up the stairs to make sure Matthew was gone and then continued, “Are you going to answer Matthew’s question?” he asked, “Why were you crying?”

Feeling cornered, her temper started to flare as she turned to walk around the room. “This is none of your business, Bo.” He continued to stare at her as she became more exasperated. “Why are you here?” she finally asked, hoping to get the pressure off of her.

“I saw Matthew sitting on the curb, crying,” he said quietly.

“Crying?” she said, unable to disguise the pained expression on her face. “Matthew was crying?”

“Yes he was,” Bo said, stepping around the couch to join her. She ran her hand through her hair, her concern growing.

“But why?” she asked, confused by Bo’s statement.

“He thinks you’re sick.” He said, looking into her surprised face. “Are you?” he asked.

“Sick?” she asked with a frown. “No… No, I’m not sick. Why would he…”

“Seems you’ve been seeing a lot of Dr. MacIver lately,” he said flatly, the realization coming to Nora as she sighed and shook her head.

“Oh…” she said, beginning to pace. “So he thinks I’m sick because…” she looks at Bo who nods his answer. “Oh no…” she sighed, slumping into a chair. “He’s worried…” she begins, now dropping her head in her hand. “I’m making such a mess…” she started to say, shaking her head in disbelief.

“I guess he doesn’t understand the ‘relationship’ thing yet,” Bo said, shoving his hands in his pockets.

“There’s no ‘relationship’ thing going on, Bo. We’ve just decided to remain friends.”

“Oh…” Bo said, trying to keep the smile from his face. “I guess that explains the crying then??” he posed the question.

“No, that wasn’t it…” she started to say and then quickly stopped, not wanting to discuss it.

Bo jumped on her statement. “So you weren’t crying over MacIver, then what was it, Red?” he asked, kneeling down in front of her chair.

He was too close, he was looking too handsome, and she didn’t think she’d be able to control her feelings if he didn’t step back.

“Look, Bo…” she said, brushing past him as she stood and walked across the room. “This isn’t something I want to talk to you about.”

Bo could see she was getting annoyed but he wasn’t ever one to step away from an issue. He straightened and stepped toward her. “OK… So it’s not Troy…” Nora sighed with exasperation. “Is it Sam??” he asked.

“No!” she practically yelled. “No I wasn’t crying over Sam. I wasn’t crying over Troy. I was…’ her forehead creased as she fought the memories of last night. “I was…”

“What?” Bo asked, stepping closer, causing her to step back against the wall. “What!?!?”

“I was crying over YOU!” she blurted out, pushing him away from her as she walked across the room. The shocked look on Bo’s face left him speechless. Just as he was about to speak, Matthew bounded down the stairs.

“Mom, I’m hungry,” he said innocently, Nora turned away from him so he wouldn’t see the building tears in her eyes.

“OK, Matthew,” she subtly wiped at her eyes as she blindly reached for the phone.

Bo could see she was upset and he walked over, placing his hand over hers and pushing the phone back down. “Why don’t you go play a bit, Buddy, and I’ll order pizza in a little bit,” Bo said as Nora slid her hand away from his and walked over to her desk.

“OK, Uncle Bo. Mom… Can I go play with Jimmy for a little while?”

“Sure Honey,” Nora answered, not turning to look at him and Matthew ran out the door.

Bo stood in the room alone, Nora’s back to him as she wiped at a tear.

“Nora…” Bo began, stepping up behind her.

“Please, Bo,” she said so quietly he could hardly hear her. “I don’t want to go into this…”

Bo reached out, grabbing her arms and turning her around to face him.

“I’m still making you cry????” he asked, his heart feeling like it was caught in a vise. “After all this time…”

She looked at him, unable to speak. She could see the pain in his eyes or was it amazement? Was he honestly surprised that she still held such strong feelings for him, she wondered.

He waited for her to say something, but she just turned away from him. “Nora…” he said as she stepped back into the living room. “I need to know why…”

“Why?” she quickly said, twirling around to face him. “Why I’m still crying over you? Is that what you want to know???” shaking her head, “How could this woman still be holding a torch for a love long gone? Is that what you’re wondering?” she asked, shrugging her shoulders.

“Oh, Bo… I’ve got a question for you…” he looked at her, waiting for her to continue. “How could you NOT be missing what we had, huh?” He started to answer, but she interrupted. “I’ve been trying to move on, not expecting some knight in shining armor to ride up on his horse and whisk me away, but seriously looking for something to fill the hole that you left in my heart.”

Bo stepped closer as she continued. She frowned fighting the rush of emotions. “I push the heartache aside during the daytime, when I can pretend to be attracted to others, but when night comes, and I crawl into my bed alone…” she looks at him as a tear falls. “It’s your arms I need around me, and no one else will do.”

“Red…” he said, stepping closer, “I didn’t know …”

“How could you know, Bo…” she shrugged. “You’ve moved on… You’ve got control of YOUR life,” she held her clinched fists in front of her. “I need you to tell me how… How did you do it? How…” she practically begged for an answer.

“Oh Red…” he said, standing only inches from her. “I haven’t moved on,” the surprise crossing her face. “I don’t have control of anything in my life. I’m walking around in a fog, most days. I’m the one,” he points to his chest, “who can’t let go of YOU!” he reached up and caressed her face. She slowly shook it, unable to believe what he was saying.

“It’s true,” he said quietly, taking in the beauty of her face. “Why do you think I’m here, huh?” he asked and she didn’t answer. “I’ve been riding by your house, every night, for the last three years.” She looked amazed and he nodded. “That’s right… I can’t let go, Red. Oh hell,” he quickly said, “I don’t want to let go. I want to be the one holding you in my arms at night. ME!” he said as a slight smile crossed her face.

“Bo…” she sighed, reaching up to caress his face. “We’ve been such idiots and wasted so much time…” a tear falls down her cheek.

“I don’t want to waste anymore time, Red. I want US again.” He pulled her close and she willingly leaned into him, his lips coming to hers.

“Is the pizza here yet!” Matthew yelled as he walked into the house. He stopped short when he saw his Mom and Uncle Bo breaking apart from their kiss. “Ahh…. Mom….” He chided. “You shouldn’t be kissing Uncle Bo if you’re sick.”

Bo and Nora slightly chuckle as they look away from his sweet face to stare into one another’s eyes. “I’ve suddenly been cured, Honey,” she said, looking lovingly into Bo’s eyes. “My heart feels just like new,” she said, brushing back Bo’s hair at his temples and slipping her hand around Bo’s head and pulling him into another kiss.

Matthew covered his eyes as Bo’s hold on his Mother tightened.

The End.
