The Perfect Gift   Bo slowly woke up to somebody gently shaking him. “Daddy…are you awake?”   Bo rolled over and smiled at his son. He was always amazed at how much Matt looked like his mother. Bo reached up and gave his son a hug and a kiss. “I’m awake now. What are you doing up?”   Matt smiled Bo’s smile. “I’ve been up for a while watching cartoons with mommy. But she sent me up here to tell you that if you want breakfast you have to get up now.”   “Mommy’s making breakfast?”   “Uh huh…waffles. My favorites.”   “Well waffles is the one thing your mom can make without burning the house down.”   Matt was sitting by the headboard playing with something. “What’s this stuff?”   Bo smiled as he saw what his son was talking about. “It’s called mistletoe.”   Matt played with the leaves and the berries. “Why is it all over the house? I saw some by the front door and in the kitchen and by the fireplace. It was every place I looked.”   “It was a surprise for your mom”   “Did she like it?”   Bo smiled at the memories of last night. “Yea…I think she liked it.”   As they were talking they heard Nora call from the kitchen. “Are you two men going to get down here or do I need to give these waffles to the squirrels?”   Matthew jumped off the bed as fast as he could. He looked impatiently at Bo. “Come on daddy…I want some waffles.”   “You get going. Tell mommy I’ll be down in a minute. And don’t eat all those waffles.”   After a quick shower Bo made his way to the kitchen. He stood outside and just listened to Matt and Nora talking about Christmas and Hanukkah and Santa. He was happy that they celebrated both holidays. It gave him plenty of chances to spoil the two people he loved the most. And this year he was going to surprise them both with the perfect gift.   Nora had her back turned to the door as Bo walked up behind her. He wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on her shoulder. Nora smiled when she smelled Bo’s cologne and she leaned back into him.   Bo slowly kissed Nora’s neck as he whispered “I love you.”   “I love you too. Last night was wonderful.”   “So you liked your surprise?”   Nora laughed a Nora laugh. “Who wouldn’t love to come home and find mistletoe every where. And even more important a husband that knows what to do when he sees it.”   “Are my waffles done yet?   Both Bo and Nora turn to see their son impatiently waiting for breakfast.   “I’m starving.”   Nora gave Bo a quick kiss. “Your son is starving.”   “So I heard. But now that I think about it his dad is starving too.” Bo gives Nora a quick wink and a huge smile. “I wonder why?”   Nora’s eyes went wide as she stared at Bo before she started to laugh. “Hmmmm I wonder why.”   The family enjoys a wonderful breakfast.   Matthew runs off to get dressed and play with his Star Wars guys. Bo did the dishes as Nora enjoyed another cup of coffee. “So what do you have on the agenda today?”   ”I need to go into the office quick. Kay and I have a file to work on.”   “You’re making Kay work on the Saturday before Christmas?”   Nora started to laugh. “She wants to escape her family. All of her in-laws are in town and she needs some time away. And besides…it’s only going to be for a few hours. What are you going to do?”   “I was thinking that we could spend some time together but maybe it will be just me and Matt. I think I may take him over to Pa’s and we can go riding. It’s been a while since we’ve done that.”   “Your father would love that. And maybe when I get done with work we can all go see the new Harry Potter movie. Matt’s been dying to see it but we’ve both been to busy to take him.”   Bo leaned over and kissed Nora deeply. “It sounds like the perfect plan. Have I told you that I love you today?”   Nora smiled. “Just today? You only love me today?”   Bo started to laugh. “Let me rephrase the question…did I tell you today that I love you very very much.”   “Much better commissioner. And yes…you have told me. Over and over again.”   ****** Nora and Kay are hard at work.   “So are you ready for Christmas?”   Nora nodded as she flipped through the file. “I just have that last perfect present for Bo and Matt but I’m expecting Tony to call any minute with the final word.”   Kay handed Nora some more papers. “I’m not sure who is going to me more excited about this gift…Bo and Matt or you.”   “I’ve thought and thought about this. I just know this is it. And Bo will never expect it. Not in a million years.”   The phone rings. Nora checks out the Caller ID before answering. “Tell me you have great news Tony.”   Kay could only hear Nora’s part of the conversation but she knew that the news was not what Nora wanted to hear.   “What are you saying? I MUST have this. I don’t care what it costs. (pause) Yes…you heard me.. any cost. Double the price if you have to but don’t call me again until it’s a done deal.” Nora hangs up the phone and puts her head on her desk.   “Not the news you wanted boss?”   Nora raised her head and glared at Kay. “I think that might be an understatement. This can’t be happening. It just can’t.”   Kay decided to try and cheer Nora up a little. “Come on…have some faith. This will all work out. It HAS to.”   “I hope you’re right. This is the perfect gift and I don’t want to lose it.” ********** Meanwhile Matt, Bo and Asa have returned from their ride. Matt is off bugging Nigel and checking out all of the presents under the tree while Bo and Asa share a cigar in the library.   Asa took a huge draw on his cigar. “You have the perfect gift picked out for Nora?”   Bo smiled. “I think so. I’m just waiting for the final word. She’ll be so excited and she doesn’t have a clue.” Bo’s cell phone rang. “Carol…tell me that you have great news. (pause) No…no…no no no. This cannot be happening.” (pause) I know…you’re trying your best but we HAVE to make this work today. This can’t wait. It’s the Saturday before Christmas. Double the price….triple the price…I don’t care. I’m heading over there. Can you meet me? (pause) I’ll see you in an hour.”   Bo hung up the phone and banged his hand against his forehead. Asa chuckled at his son’s obvious dilemma. “Problem son?”   “Yea…you could say that Pa. Can you keep an eye on Matt? I need to try and get this all worked out.”   “Not a problem. I’ll spoil him rotten.”   Bo took off in the jeep as Nora answered her phone again. “Come on Tony…give me the news I wanted.” Nora rested her head in her hands. “I can’t believe this. I can’t. I thought we had everything worked out and all I would have to do is sign some papers. Arrrgghhhh. Can you meet me there in an hour? I want this finished today!!”   Nora hung up the phone and Kay decided to try and lighten the mood. “So are you sending me home to face my family?”   Nora smiled softly. “No…you can stay here all day if you want but I need to leave. If I don’t get this….”   ********* Both Bo and Nora pulled up at the same time. They both got out of their cars and stared at each other before they smiled and walked into each others arms.   “It was YOU that was bidding against me?”   “Come on Red…who else would be willing to pay so much for this old barn?”   Nora smiled as she kissed her husband deeply. “I can’t believe this. I thought I had the perfect present and that wouldn’t have a clue.” “I guess great minds think alike. I was supposed to meet my realtor here.”   “So was I. Maybe they’re inside already.”   Bo takes Nora’s hand in his and leads her to the door. There is a note taped under the door knocker.   “Dear Bo and Nora: When Carol arrived we talked and we discovered that you were bidding against each other. Of course we got a chuckle out of that. I called the Hansens and they are willing to sell you the house for the asking price. We can finalize the deal in my office on Monday. Welcome Home Tony”   “Welcome home. I love the sound of that.”   “So do I Red.” Bo takes Nora’s face in his hands and kisses her deeply. As they break the kiss they both look up and there is mistletoe hanging in the doorway.   “I’m glad to see that your ‘surprise’ made it all the way over here. What other surprises might you have for me Commish?”   Bo smiles at Nora as he picks her up and carries her into their home.   THE END!!!
