The Snowman

Nora pulled the sash to her robe tighter around her waist as the draft from the windows sent a chill through her body.

She smiled as she watched the white flakes in all shapes and sizes hit the ground. They came down fast and furious quickly filling up the backyard. Moonbeams caused the snow to sparkle like diamonds.

Nora shook him gently at the shoulders causing him to stir. “Bo, look it’s snowing.”

Turning over to squint at the clock shining 2:30 am into the dark room. “Nora, I’ve seen snow before,” he grumbled. “What are you doing up?”

“Let’s go outside and build a snowman!”

“Are you insane?”

“No! Let’s wake up Matthew and we’ll all build a snowman together. It’ll be fun!” She sat down on the bed next to him.

“Um….honey….you do know what time it is, don’t you?”

“Yes. It’s 2:30 in the morning.”

“Then you realize that our son is fast asleep as are most humans in this time zone. Come back to bed.”

“I want him to experience this beautiful act of nature.”

“He can experience it tomorrow when he’s helping me shovel.”

“Oh Bo where’s your sense of fun and adventure?”

“Come back to bed and I’ll show you.” They kissed.

“You mean you wouldn’t rather work off your energy in the cold and snow building a snowman?”

“No.” He pulled her on top of him and they kissed some more. As much as she wanted to be, Nora was not into it. Bo could feel it. He pulled back.

“You really want to do this, don’t you?”

“Yes!”

“You’re not going to let me sleep, are you?”

“Nope!”

Bo sighed, “Where are my long johns?”

“Yea!! I’ll wake up Matthew. This is going to be so much fun!!”

“Mmmm.”

She kissed him quickly as she left the room.

Nora woke Matthew from his sleep. After learning he could get up and play in the snow, he was very happy. Nora helped him dress.

Bo was waiting for the two of them downstairs. Deciding to join in the fun rather than fight it, he made a fire and some hot chocolate.

Nora was a vision when she came down the stairs. Smiling from ear to ear as she listened to Matthew chatter on about snow and the intricacies of building a snowman.

“Hey, buddy. So are you ready to build the best snowman in all of Llanview?”

“I sure am, daddy!! Can he be as tall as you??”

“Sure! Why not. Maybe taller, like Grandpa.”

“Cool!!”

Matthew was out the door before they could offer him some cocoa.

“Thank you for doing this, Bo. I know you’re very tired. But, I couldn’t resist being out in the beautiful snow with my two favorite men.”

“Just seeing you and Matt together just now…it’s worth it. Let’s go.”

They kissed for a moment until Matthew knocked on the window gesturing for them to come outside.

The snow was still coming down hard as ever. But it created a wonderful winter wonderland.

Matthew was covered in snow before too long. He had already started rolling the first snowball for the bottom.

As they continued to build the snowman, Nora pulled Bo aside.

“What? Too cold?” he laughed.

“No, not at all. I just wanted to give you this.”

Nora then dumped some snow down his pants and ran.

Jumping around, “Ohhhh, that is cold.” He gathered up some snow of his own and approached Nora.

“Well, maybe I could warm you up later. If you know what I mean,” she teased.

“I’m gonna hold you to that,” he said as he dumped a snowball on her head.

“Well, that was uncalled for.”

“Uncalled for??? You just dumped snow down my pants!”

The two of them began chasing each other around the yard, throwing snowballs, laughing and tackling each other in the snow.

“Are you gonna help me finish my snowman?” Matthew asked as he leaned down to talk to his parents...Bo on top of Nora. “I need rocks for his face and sticks for his arms.”

“Sure sweetie. We’ll help you. Mommy and daddy just got carried away.”

Bo helped Nora up. They dusted each other off. Bo looked for rocks and Nora looked for sticks.

“What else does he need?” Matt asked.

“He needs a hat!” Nora said.

“Maybe a scarf,” Bo suggested.

Pretty soon the three of them had created the best snowman in all of Llanview. It was almost sunrise by the time they were through. Bo and Nora carried an exhausted, but very happy Matthew to bed. They changed out of their wet clothes and into their warm robes and went downstairs to watch the sun come up. Wrapped in each other’s arms by the fire, hot cocoa in hand, they witnessed an amazing sunrise together.

“Well, Red, I have to hand it to you. This is one of the best ideas you’ve ever had.” He kissed the back of her neck.

“Thank you. See I told you it would be fun. Still cold?”

“Certain parts of me are cold. But you said you’d warm them up, remember?”

“I said that?”

“Yes, you did.”

“Well, I always keep my word.”

They lay down in front of the fire and the rest is history.

THE END!
