As Things Change - Part X

Bo and Nora are waiting in Asa’s study. Nigel has offered them a drink and left to see to dinner. Bo settles into the sofa, putting his arm around Nora as she sits beside him. “How was your day?”

“It was okay. I got all my files in order.”

“So you won’t be thinking about work in Texas?”

She smiles. “I think I will have plenty on my mind without worrying about work.”

He leans in, whispering. “Like those tight jeans?”

She laughs, kissing him. “Exactly like that.”

Bo pulls her close, kissing her as Asa walks into the room. “Give it a rest, you two.”

Bo leans back. “Don’t you knock?”

“In my own house?”

Nora playfully nudges Bo, giving him a mock glare. “How are you, Asa?”

“Where is my grandson?”

“He’s spending some time with his friends before we take him out to the wilderness of Texas.”

Asa waves dismissively. “Texas is paradise for a kid. He’ll have a whole ranch to explore.”

“Hope he doesn’t get lost,” Nora mutters.

“He’s a Buchanan. We can find our way around the ranch blindfolded. He’ll be fine. Make sure he learns to ride that horse I picked out for him. Chuck will know which one I mean. She’s a beauty.”

Nora looks at Bo. “Is this horse tame enough for Matthew? He’s not an expert rider from the few times he’s ridden here.”

Asa frowns at her. “Do you think I would choose a horse he wasn’t ready to ride? That mare is perfect for Matthew. Don’t be such a worrier.”

“I’m his mother! I’m allowed to worry.”

Bo pats her on the back. “Easy, Red. I’ll make sure Matthew can handle the horse before he goes out.”

She leans over to kiss him. “Thank you, Bo.”

Asa walks over to his desk, picking up a file and handing it to Bo. “Give these papers to Chuck. We’re buying 50 new head of cattle and a new truck to use for fixing the fences in the west pasture. There were plenty of storms in the spring, so there will be lots for you to do when you’re down there.”

Nora looks shocked. “You don’t expect us to work on the ranch?”

“What did you think you’d be doing?”

“Sunning myself by the pool. Reading a few good books. Relaxing in the hot tub.”

“There will be plenty of time for that when the ranching is done.”

Bo grins as Nora is getting worked up. “He’s teasing, honey. You can do all the relaxing you want. Matthew and I will ride out with the men. It will be fun for him to see how the ranch works – a little male bonding.”

Nora leans into him. “As long as you have enough energy left for bonding of a different kind,” she whispers.

He grins. “You can count on that.”

Asa looks at his watch. “Nigel should have dinner ready. Let’s get you two fed so you can get on to other things.”

Nora and Bo laugh as they follow Asa out of the room.

Matthew and Stevie are shooting hoops when Kallie walks into the gym. “Hi, guys.”

Matt smiles at her. “Hi, Kallie. What are you doing here?”

“I was just talking to Andrew about some ideas for the Teens Together summer program.”

“Oh, man. I forgot I need to talk to him too. We’re leaving for the ranch on Saturday so I won’t be able to run the meetings for a while.”

“It was supposed to be your turn, Matthew.”

“I know but my parents just sprung this trip on me.”

“I can go talk to him for you,” Stevie volunteers. “I'll take over the meetings while you’re out of town.”

“Thanks, Stevie. I owe you one.”

Stevie leaves the gym as Kallie turns to Matthew. “How long are you going to be in Texas?”

He shrugs. “Not sure. My parents just decided we’re going to the ranch since I’m not playing baseball. My dad said we’re going to play it by ear. There’s a lot of work to be done on the ranch this time of year, so I’m sure we’ll be busy.”

Kallie grins. “I can’t wait to see the pics of you as a cowpoke.”

“Don’t count on it. I won’t be posing for pics down there.”

“You’re no fun.”

He smiles. “Maybe one for you, but only if you delete as soon as you see it.”

“Maybe… So you’re leaving this Saturday?” He nods. “I won’t get to spend any time with you…”

He looks at her curiously. “You want to?”

“Well, I thought maybe we could hang out this summer since you’re not playing baseball. I guess we can get together when you get back from Texas?”

“Well, Stevie and I are planning to go to ski camp upstate in July.”

“Really? Ski camp?”

“Yeah. Stevie found it and it looks like a ton of fun. I just wanted to do something a little different this year.”

Kallie nods. “I can understand that. Will you be here for Fourth of July? We could hang out then.”

“I’d like that. I will be in town. Camp doesn’t start until mid-July. What are you planning this summer?”

Kallie shrugs. “I’m going to try to get a job. This market sucks but I’m hoping to find something, even part time. I put in an application at the Putt Putt Park.”

“Is that what you were doing the night I saw you?”

“Yeah and you still haven’t told me what happened with you that night…”

Matt shrugs. “I only got grounded for a weekend, so it was no big deal.”

“It had something to do with Raven, didn’t it?” Matt avoids her look. “Why won’t you tell me what’s going on with her?”

“It’s not your problem, Kallie and I have it under control. Besides, I’m leaving on Saturday and then I don’t have to worry about her anymore.”

Kallie nods. “If you say so. Would you like to hang out at the picnic tomorrow? I mean, since you’re leaving town, it would be our last chance…”

Matt is surprised. “You want us to go to the picnic together?”

“Sure, why not?”

He smiles. “I’d like that too. Meet me outside the gym and we’ll head over together?”

Kallie nods. “Right after last bell.”

Danielle walks up to them. “Hi, Matthew. How goes it?”

“Okay. How are you?”

“I’m good.” She turns to Kallie. “Our meeting starts in 5 minutes.”

“Oh, that’s right. I’m sorry, Matt. I have to go.”

“It’s okay. I need to find Stevie and head home anyway. See you tomorrow?”

Kallie smiles. “Tomorrow.”

Matt walks away as Danielle turns to Kallie. “What’s going on with you two?”

“Nothing. We were just talking.”

Danielle looks at her suspiciously. “Are you getting back together?”

“Of course not,” Kallie says quickly. “We’re just friends, remember?”

“Good. Because I heard a rumor yesterday that Matt is sleeping with Raven.”

“WHAT? You’re not serious.”

Danielle nods. “That’s what I heard.”

Kallie shakes her head. “I don’t believe it.”

“I’m just telling you what I heard.”

Kallie frowns. “He has been very evasive when I bring her up.”

“So maybe it’s true. You guys aren’t dating, so…”

“That doesn’t mean he would sleep with her. Matt’s not like that.”

Danielle shrugs. “I guess you know him better than I do. Let’s go or we’ll be late for the meeting.”

Rex comes through the door with a pizza box in his hand. Lauren is sitting on the couch, eating soup. He tosses the pizza on the coffee table and plops down on the couch beside Lauren, leaning in to kiss her. “You started dinner without me. How was your day?”

She shrugs. “Not so good. I came home at lunch. I didn’t feel so good.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Just a little stomach bug, I think.”

“Anything I can do?”

She nods. “Get that pizza out of here. The smell is making me nauseous.”

He grabs the box and takes it into the kitchen, tossing a couple pieces on a plate and taking a seat at the table. “Did I tell you Bo is going down to the ranch?”

She turns to him. “No. When?”

“They’re leaving on Saturday. I may get busy running the PI biz by myself.”

“How long will they be gone?”

Rex shrugs. “Not sure. Bo wants to go down and see how it goes. I think he’s finally going to teach Matthew how to drive.”

Lauren smiles. “I know you’ve already taken him out. He should be fine with Bo.”

“How did you know?”

She walks into the kitchen, setting down her bowl. “You just confirmed it but I suspected when you disappeared the other day. How did he do?”

Rex grins. “He wasn’t bad for his first try. I took him out to the old drive-in north of town. It was perfect to keep him from denting my car.”

“Good idea. You’re so good with him.”

“He’s a good kid. His parents can be rough on him sometimes and Bo doesn’t want to admit he’s growing up.”

She puts her arms around him from behind, whispering in his ear. “I hope you’re this good to our kids.”

Rex breaks away, picking up his plate and putting it in the dishwasher. “I’m glad we don’t have to worry about that.”

“What do you mean?”

He shrugs. “I mean we’re not going to have that to worry about for a while.”

Lauren looks at him seriously, tears threatening in her eyes. “Are you saying you don’t want kids?”

Rex is surprised by the tears. “No… I didn’t say that. It’s just… What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I just don’t understand how you can be so great with your partner’s kid and not want us to have kids.”

He takes her in his arms. “Hey, slow down. I’m not ruling out kids for us. I don’t mean that. I just think we’re not there yet. Don’t you want to be married first?”

“I never realized you were such a stickler for tradition.”

He smiles down at her. “Well, your parents weren’t too happy that their daughter is living in sin. I can imagine their reaction if you were living in sin and knocked up.”

Lauren pulls away. “So you don’t want kids because of my parents?”

Rex sighs. “Can we not talk about kids? I just think we’re not in a place where kids are on the radar, okay?”

She nods, fighting the tears again. “I’m not feeling well. I’m going to bed.” She rushes into their room, closing the door as Rex tries to follow her. He opens the door and she has disappeared into the bathroom.

He walks up to the door and finds it locked, hearing the water running. “Lauren, come on. Let me in. What did I do?”

Rex waits on the bed until she finally emerges from her bath. She glares at him. “I don’t want to talk to you.”

He nods with a frown. “Okay by me.”

Lauren climbs into bed, pulling the covers up to her chin and turning away from Rex. He rolls his eyes and climbs off the bed, making his way to the living room and turning on his video game.

Marcie is sitting in Michael’s office when he walks in. He is reading a chart and doesn’t notice her at first. He looks up when he reaches his desk and sees food sitting on top of it. “Hey, Marcie. Thanks for bringing dinner. I’m starving! I don’t think I’ve eaten all day.”

She smiles at him. “I figured. I got your favorites from Carlotta’s.”
He drops his chart on the corner of his desk and takes a seat, reaching for the can of soda and popping it open. “What brings you by?”

“I wanted to see when you were coming home. Your nurse said you volunteered for another shift?”

Michael nods. “We’re short staffed tonight and I had a patient come into the ER that I want to keep an eye on. I was going to call you. Did you need something?”

“Not really. I just wanted to talk.”

He looks at his watch. “It’s quiet now. I can give you my undivided attention. Well, except for the food.”

She smiles. “You eat. It’s okay.”

He takes a bite of his burrito. “Go ahead, Marcie. What’s on your mind?”

She takes a deep breath. “Well, you know how we’ve been trying to get pregnant?”

He nods with a grin. “Yep. And it’s been fun!”

She gives him a shaky smile. “Right. But we haven’t been very successful…”

“No, but sometimes these things take a while. We’ve only been trying for a couple months.”

“Yes, except I have a confession to make…”

He stops as he’s about to take a bite, turning his full attention to her. “What’s that?”

Marcie avoids making eye contact. “I… Well, I stopped taking my birth control last year…” She finally looks at him and sees his frown. “I know we talked about waiting when we got so busy with work, but I was so sure that we wanted a baby that I just… I’m sorry, Michael.”

He sits quietly for a long while, trying to digest this new information. He finally looks at her. “Why are you telling me this now?”

She looks up at him with tears in her eyes. “I’ve seen Dr. Conklin. She doesn’t think we’ll be able to conceive, Michael.”

“Is she sure?”

She shrugs. “Pretty sure. Of course, sometimes it happens, but she didn’t sound hopeful.”

Michael gets up and walks around the desk, pulling her into his arms. “I’m so sorry, Marcie. I know how much this means to you.”

She buries her face in his chest. “I want a child so badly. I know this is soon for you but would you consider adoption?”

He looks down at her. “Adoption?” She nods. “Where did that come from?”

She pulls away. “I spoke with Nora and she said she would help us with the legal end of it. I’ve just… Working with the kids at the Center, I just realized how much I want a child of my own. I met a little girl, about 3, who absolutely stole my heart. She has the biggest brown eyes and…” She stops when she sees Michael staring at her. “I know what you’re thinking. It’s too soon and I’m being hasty but… Oh Michael, if you could see her adorable little face and know that she has no real mommy, you would…” Marcie starts to tear up.

He pulls her tight against him. “Take it easy, Marcie. This is a lot to process. But I can see you have your heart set on this. I don’t know what to say.”

She looks up at him. “I know this is sudden, but will you just promise me you’ll talk to Nora with me?”

He nods. “Let’s start there. I need to have time to think about this. We were talking about our own child and now I have to switch gears to adoption. It’s all kind of fast for me.”

“I understand. Really, I do. I’ll get us an appointment to see Nora.” She smiles up at him. “I’ll let you finish your dinner and I’ll see you at home, okay?”

He leans down to kiss her. “I love you, Marcie. And we’ll figure this out. I promise.”

Thursday morning…

Rex wanders out from the bathroom clad only in a towel. Lauren is still in bed. He looks at the clock on the nightstand. “Shouldn’t you be getting ready for work?”

She shakes her head. “I called in.”

He sits beside her on the bed. “What’s wrong?”

She hesitates for a moment, debating whether to tell him the truth. She finally sighs. “I think it’s the flu. No big deal.”

“Still from last night? Maybe you should see a doctor.”

She shakes her head. “I’m fine. Just go to work. I’ll be okay. I told them at the station if I feel better I’ll come in this afternoon.”

“Are you sure? I can stay if you want.”

“No, you go. I just want to sleep anyway.”

He gets off the bed. “Okay. Let me get you some ice water.”

She pulls the covers up and rolls over. “Thanks.”

Rex walks back in with the water. He quietly dresses and leans down to kiss Lauren on the cheek. “Call me if you need anything. I’ll check on you at lunch. Feel better.”

“Love you,” she says as he walks out of the room. When she hears Rex leave the loft, she pushes back the covers and heads to the bathroom, closing the door behind her.

Bo and Nora are sitting in the kitchen enjoying their morning coffee and reading the paper. She peers at him over her coffee. “Are you packed for the trip?”

He sets down his paper. “Sure am. It’s not that hard going to the ranch, honey. A couple pairs of those tight jeans you like and an assortment of tee shirts. Instant wardrobe.”

She winks at him. “Don’t forget your trunks for the hot tub.”

“You mean I need trunks?”

She laughs. “Bo Buchanan!”

The phone rings and Nora picks it up. “Hello… This is Nora… Of course I remember you, Mr. Thompson… Yes, we can meet you this morning… Can you tell me what this is about? … Yes, Bo is here with me… We will be in your office at 10am… Thank you for calling…”
Nora hangs up the phone, shaking her head. Bo looks at her curiously. “What was that about?”

“Not sure, but we have to be in Mr. Thompson’s office in an hour, so you better get dressed.”
