As Things Change - Part VII

Nora is propped in bed, reading a book when Bo walks through the door. “Hey, Red. What are you doing in bed this time of day? Are you feeling okay?”

She nods as he climbs onto the bed beside her. “I’m fine. Just catching up on some reading.”

He kisses her on the cheek. “Good. How was your day?”

“Interesting.” She sets the book aside, moving to put her arms around him and winces. “Ow!”

He looks down at her. “What’s wrong, honey?”

She sits back. “Nothing. It’s just sore muscles.”

Bo grins. “You’re not trying to get back into your workout routine again, are you?”

She frowns at him. “Funny, Buchanan. I was working at the Center this morning and Andrew asked me to keep an eye on this little girl.”

“So, this is Andrew’s fault?”

She stretches, rubbing her lower back. “It’s no one’s fault. I’m fine.”

“Right, because it’s not like you’re too old to be chasing toddlers…”

She swats him on the arm, wincing. “Watch it, mister.”

He reaches up and begins to massage her shoulders. “Come here, honey.”

She turns around and leans back. “Oh, that feels good. Don’t stop.”
He runs his hands down her back, gently kneading her sore muscles. “I know just what you need…”

“Mmm… You sure do.”

He continues his massage. “I saw Rex at the office this morning. He’s going to ask Lauren to marry him.”

“Really? When?”

“This week, I think – if he doesn’t chicken out. He asked me about my proposal to you…”

“Such as it was.”

“Hey, you said yes, didn’t you?”

“Despite that awful ring.”

“I thought you liked the ring? You just said it was jinxed.”

She glances over her shoulder. “I was being nice. That ring was so not me. I can’t believe you chose that.”

“You can say you hated the ring now, but you accepted my proposal, so it worked.”

“I was just so relieved that I wasn’t a murderer that I wasn’t thinking clearly.”

“Uh huh. I still say it was my romantic charm. Which is still something you can’t resist…” He leans in and begins to kiss her neck, slipping his arms around her, his hands making their way under her tee shirt and up to massage her breasts. “Bo… You’re supposed to be working on my sore muscles. Don’t get distracted…”

“Too late…” He lifts the hem of her shirt, pulling it over her head and tossing it aside.

She turns in his arms, kissing him. “Bo… Matthew will be home any time.”

He leans back, pulling her with him. “Then we haven’t a moment to waste…”

Matt and Stevie walk into the gym at the Center. Stevie stops when he sees Raven sitting in the bleachers. He nudges Matt. “Isn’t that the chick that got us in trouble at the Putt Putt Park?”

“Yeah, that’s her. Let’s get out of here before she sees us.” He turns to leave when he hears Raven calling his name.

She jogs over to them. “Hey, Matt. You’re not still pouting about Friday, are you?”

Stevie turns to her. “We spent the weekend locked in our rooms because of you.”

Raven shrugs. “I wasn’t the one who got into the fight.”

“No, but you pissed the guy off. Did you think that was funny?”

She smirks. “Actually, it was.”

Matt walks away. “I’m glad you got your kicks. Let’s go, Stevie.”

Raven follows him. “Wait a sec. Can I talk to you?”

Stevie keeps walking. “Just get lost.”

Matt stops and nods to Stevie. “I’ll be okay. I’ll catch up in a minute.”

Stevie gives Raven a dirty look before turning to Matt. “You sure?”

Matt nods. “Okay, later.”

Matt turns his attention to Raven as Stevie leaves the gym. “I don’t really have anything to say to you. What do you want?”

“You said at the meeting if I needed anything…” He nods. “Well, how good are you at history?”

Matt shrugs. “Okay, I guess. It’s not my favorite.”

“Would you be able to help me out?”

“You mean like studying? Sure, we have a tutoring program here at the Center.”

Raven shakes her head. “It’s too late for that. This is the final. I need specific help, if you get my drift.”

“You mean cheating.”

“Is that beneath you, Buchanan?”

“No, it’s just…”

“Don’t tell me you’ve never done it before. Do the kids here at the Center know how perfect you are?”

Matt frowns at her. “I didn’t say I was perfect.”

“Great. So you’ll help me. See you at school tomorrow.”

Matt shakes his head as she walks away. “I never said that!” Raven ignores him and leaves the gym. Matt follows her out and finds Stevie waiting for him in the parking lot. “What did she want?”

Matt shrugs. “Nothing, really.”

Stevie grabs his bike. “You’re lying, dude. I asked around school about her after the stunt she pulled at the Putt Putt Park. She’s bad news. Raven never does anything without an agenda. Why do you even talk to her?”

“She came to the meeting, so maybe she really wants help.”

“Wake up, Buchanan. After what she did, you shouldn’t give her the time of day. Don’t tell me you like her?”

Matt shakes his head. “No, I don’t like her. Let’s get out of here. I want to stop at the PI office. I need to talk to Rex.”

Nora is resting her head on Bo’s chest as he dozes. “Bo…”

His eyes flutter open. “Hmm?”

“What would you think about us maybe…”

His eyes slowly close. “Us maybe what?”

“Maybe having another child?”

Bo’s eyes are fully open now. “I’m sorry. Did you just say another child?”

Nora lifts her head to look at him. “I mean adopting. Of course we’re too old…”

He puts his arms around her. “Wow. Where is this coming from, Red?”

“I was just wondering what you would think…”

“I think we have our hands full with Matthew. We’re nearing the home stretch and soon we’ll be shipping him off to college.”

“Bo! You know I’m not looking forward to my baby leaving home.”

He kisses her gently. “I know that, honey. What I mean is that it will give us more time for each other instead of worrying about him all the time.”

“Are you saying we don’t spend enough time together? You think I’m ignoring you?”

“I don’t mean it like that. I just meant that we would have more freedom to do things we want to do. Why are you thinking about another child?” She shrugs, looking away. He puts his fingers on her chin and turns her to face him. “Out with it, Red. What’s this all about?”

She sighs, laying her head back on his chest. “I just met this little girl at the Center…”

“The one who gave you the sore muscles I just helped to relax?”

She smiles, nodding slowly. “Yeah. Her name is Miki and Andrew has been watching her at the Center. I thought it was so that her mother could find a job but Andrew told me today that Mrs. Floyd is only her foster mother and that he’s trying to find her a home…” She stops, suddenly choking up. “I… She’s just such a sweet little girl and she has no one to call Mommy…”

Bo smiles, looking down on her. “Ah, Red. You are such a softy. One of the things I love most about you is you have the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever met. I just… How old did you say this little girl is?”

“I’m not sure exactly. I’d say around 3 maybe.”

“Oh, a 3-year old? That’s pretty young.”

She lifts her head, looking in his eyes. “I know. And I know this is out of left field but if you could just meet her and look in that sweet little face… Can you promise we’ll think about it?”

Bo stares at her thoughtfully before slowly nodding. “Sure, honey. I can do that.”

Matthew pushes open the door to the PI office. “Yo, Rex.”

He looks up from his desk. “What are you doing here, squirt? Aren’t you grounded?”

Matt takes a seat, leaning back and putting his feet on Rex’s desk. “Nah, I got paroled after the weekend.”

Rex playfully pushes his feet off the desk. “What were you fighting about?”

Matt shrugs. “Nothing really. It was a misunderstanding.”

Rex grins. “Uh huh. What’s her name?”

“There is no ‘her.’ Just drop it, Rex.”

“Okay, if you say so. Why are you here?”

“You promised to take me driving, remember?”

“Did I?”

Matt nods. “Come on, Rex. I’m the only guy in school who hasn’t been behind the wheel yet. My dad will keep making excuses.”

“Well, you being grounded is a pretty good one.”

Matt rolls his eyes. “If I hadn’t been grounded, he would have come up with something else. Don’t you wig out on me too. Please?”

Rex takes a deep breath. “I suppose we could go out. I’ll have to find something far away from anything resembling real traffic. I’m not into you using my car like bumper cars.”

“That's cute, Rex. Where do you think we could go that there won’t be other cars?”

Rex shakes his head. “I’ll think of something. Meet me here tomorrow after school. Now get out of here so I can get my work done and go home.”

Matt jumps up and heads for the door. “Thanks, Rex. You’re the best.”

“Yeah, yeah. Go before I come to my senses.”

Bo is staring off into space as Nora watches him. “Why so quiet?”

He shrugs. “Just thinking.”

She props herself up on her elbow. “You hate the idea of adopting.”

He focuses on her. “I didn’t say that. I’m just wondering where all this is coming from. It’s not like we don’t have enough on our plate dealing with Matt. I mean, he just got in a fight and quit the baseball team. We have to get to the bottom of that.”

“Are you accusing me of neglecting our son?”

“No! Of course not, honey. I know how protective you are of him. It’s just that taking on another child when we have yet to get a grip on the one that is already ours… It just seems… odd.”

Nora shrugs. “I can’t explain it, Bo. Not right now. I am worried about Matthew. I ALWAYS worry about him. I’m less concerned about the baseball issue than you are.” She hesitates. “And I think we should let him go to the ski camp.”

“You’re kidding, right?”

She shakes her head. “I called Stevie’s mom and talked to her about the camp. She has a neighbor who sent her kids the past couple years and they really enjoyed it. The neighbor encouraged her to send Stevie. He probably convinced Matthew to join him.”

“So, you’re just going to give in on this?”

She shrugs. “I think it’s like you said, it’s probably all about girls.”

“I thought you were totally against him dating?”

She sighs as she lays her head back on his chest. “Oh, I am. But he’s almost 16 now. I think I’ve gotten as far as I’m going to get with that argument. I guess I got lucky because I honestly never thought it would take him so long to get over Kallie.”

Bo grins. “I’m not sure that ever went away. I think he just got better at hiding it from you.”

She pops her head back up to look at him. “Are you saying they’re still together? How long have you known?”

He chuckles. “Relax, Red. I don’t know anything, I just have a sneaking suspicion. And the fact that there hasn’t been a new girl leads me to the conclusion that he’s probably still involved in some way with Kallie. He sees her at the Center all the time. Have you seen them together?”

“Are you kidding? I’m not allowed to ‘spy’ on him when he’s volunteering. I was given strict instructions on what’s cool and not cool.”

“So that’s why you took on the babysitting duties for Andrew?”

She shakes her head. “No, I was just doing him a favor.” She looks at him seriously. “Will you really think about it?”

He nods, pulling her close. “I promised I would. But for now, I’m just trying to stay one step ahead of my son.”

They hear the front door slam. “Mom! Dad! Anybody home?”

“Speak of the devil.” Bo throws back the covers, climbing out of bed. “Looks like our afternoon of fun is over.” He pulls on his sweatshirt.

“Be right down, Matt!”
