A WALK IN THE PARK

Bo had just wound down his late evening Spring jog in Llanview Park. He was stretching out his muscles and cooling down on a park bench. He had to get out of the garrett. He just left a “No, he’s mine” “No, he’s not. He’s mine” argument over him between Gabrielle and Alex. His head hurt from their bickering and he tried to get through to the two women that he wasn’t either of theirs. He didn’t want to be and he had no intention of being. He wasn’t anyone’s and he liked it that way! What he really wanted to know was when Gabrielle would be moving out and how in the hell did Alex get involved?

Nora dressed quickly and in silence. She and Troy had been thisclose to having sex, but she fended him off. She asked him to leave and he obliged, reluctantly. She thanked her lucky stars she came to her senses and told him no. She could never love this man that way and she knew she never would. It was better to stop this nonsense before it got out of control. She heard Troy close the door behind him and a huge rush of relief ran through her body. She had to get out of the house. She needed air. She began her walk to Llanview Park.

Bo stared at the setting sun. He was just enjoying the weather and the peaceful setting. He took a hard look around and he liked what he saw. He enjoyed seeing the kids and the families playing. The couples holding hands. His life was finally getting back in order after the Melanie debacle and his father’s fake death. He was taking small steps in repairing his relationship with Asa and he was in the process of kicking out Gabrielle. Things were looking up.

As Nora strolled down the path, she saw Bo sitting on the bench. Not in the mood for seeing him at that moment, she started to turn around but her sneaker caught in a piece of the sidewalk causing her to trip and fall into a small patch of bushes. Bo turned to see what the commotion was and he saw Nora trying to regain her balance and get the heck out of there. No such luck.

B: Having a problem? (He smiled at her)

N: Hello. (She said nonchalantly with a wave and at the same time pulling a few stray leaves from her hair)

B: Are you all right?

N: I’m fine. Just took a little detour! (She laughed)

B: Let me help you.

She took his hand and he helped her up. He walked her to the bench and she hobbled a bit on one ankle.

B: Let me take a look at that ankle.

Without hesitation, he grabbed her leg and placed it over his bare knee. Their skin was touching for the first time in a long time, producing a tingle in Nora she didn’t come close to feeling after being with Troy only moments before.

He carefully removed her sneaker and pulled down her sock. His fingers examined her ankle, which was a little red and swollen.

B: You better put some ice on that. Let me take you home.

N: No! I don’t want to go home. I really needed the walk and the fresh air. I’ll be fine.

B: You’re having one of those nights, too? Same with me. I just finished up a good run.

N: I see that. You look….fit.

He laughed.

B: Thanks. So do you.

N: Thanks.

B: Wanna talk about it?

N: About what?

B: Your bad day.

N: Oh that! (She laughed)

Bo placed a cold water bottle he had on her ankle, which was still propped on his leg. He rolled the bottle gently back and forth.

N: You first.

Bo was kind of embarrassed to tell her his story.

B: Forget it.

N: No! Tell me. You’ve got me curious now.

B: Two words: Gabrielle and Alex.

Nora laughed.

N: Ah ha! Don’t tell me….they’re fighting over Llanview’s most eligible bachelor!! (She laughed)

Bo laughed right along with her.

B: Crazy isn’t it?

N: Do you want to be caught?

B: Not by those two!!! I think I’d rather stay a bachelor for the rest of my life or better yet, I’ll become a monk! (He laughed)

N: Oh come on! They’re not that bad. (Not believing it for a moment)

Bo looked at her with a crooked smile.

B: Did you hit your head too when you fell down?

N: Okay! Okay! You’re right. They’re not good enough for you anyway.

Bo looked at her and just smiled.

B: I don’t know about that, but, thanks.

N: It’s the truth.

Without realizing it, Bo started to massage her ankle and foot area. The cool water dripped from his fingertips. Small sweat beads formed on his brow. Nora was just enjoying the moment, almost forgetting she and Bo were not a couple anymore. He had done this so many times for her. He just knew what to do.

When Nora opened her eyes, she quickly pulled her foot away from his hands, causing Bo to jump back to reality as well.

B: Oh….sorry about that.

Nora tried to regain her composure. She put her sock and sneaker back on.

N: It’s okay. I think my ankle’s much better. Thanks.

B: No problem.

Nora could see the sweat building on his forehead. But, without thinking, she moved toward him and took the towel from around his neck and started to dab his forehead with it. She was so close to him he could smell her shampoo. His mind flashed to a time when they would seductively towel each other off and things got out of hand usually making one another late for work, meetings, friends, family, etc.

N: You’re working up a sweat just taking care of me! (She laughed)

B: Hmmm….yeah, I think so.

Bo cleared his throat and took a big gulp from his water bottle.

B: So, are you going to tell me about your day?

Llanview’s evening had turned to dark as they sat there. The moon was full and the stars were beaming, illuminating the park with brightness.
Nora felt really uncomfortable at the prospect of telling Bo about her almost encounter with another man.

N: Oh, forget it. You made me forget it.

B: Oh, come on. That’s not fair. I told you mine.

N: But, mine’s more complicated.

B: Well, if it’s too personal, you don’t have to tell me.

With one big sigh, she blurted it out: Troy and I almost had sex tonight.

Bo spit out his water, choking on it at the same time.

B: What?

N: I told you it was complicated.

B: I didn’t even know you guys were dating.

N: Ha! That makes two of us. (She laughed)

Bo was totally confused.

N: I thought I was attracted to him. I thought I could love him. But, I can’t. I told him so. I don’t know what I was thinking. (Shaking her head)

B: Sounds like you were confused. Are you okay? He didn’t try to hurt you did he?

N: No. Nothing like that. It was very creepy though. Flashes of Colin went through my head.

B: It must have been very painful for you. I’m glad you did the right thing. I know you can’t be with a man without loving him wholeheartedly.

N: Like I did with you.

B: Right. Like you did…what?

N: You heard me.

She was still sitting unbearably close to him. He studied her eyes and her face. He couldn’t think of anything to say. He placed one hand on her hip and pulled her closer. Their lips met and it was like fireworks had been set off. Nora snuggled closer to him….their kisses stealing each other’s breath.

Asa: Well, hot damn! Look at this!! The two most stubborn people I know have FINALLY come to their senses!!

Bo and Nora jumped about 50 feet in the air when they heard Asa’s booming voice. They were so wrapped up in each other; they didn’t hear anything or anyone around them.

B: Hi, pa.

A: What in the blazes is going on here? Are you two holding out on me?

N: Why yes, Asa. You’ve uncovered our secret!

A: I knew it! I knew you two couldn’t stay away from each other! You have made me the happiest man in the whole world tonight. I’ll leave you alone now to get back to what you were doing.

Asa left the park with the biggest grin Bo had ever seen on the guy.

B: He hides his feelings well, don’t you think? (He laughed)

N: He’s really genuinely happy isn’t he?

B: I think so.

N: I thought he gave up on us by now.

B: You know what? I thought we both gave up on us. Whadda' ya say, Red? Are you willing to give it another spin on the dance floor?

Nora smiled, trying to hold back some tears.

N: You are the only man I’ve ever truly loved with my heart and soul.

B: Isn’t that funny? I was just going to say the same thing about you….well except for the fact that you’re a woman. (They laughed. He kissed her) I’ve missed you.

N: I’ve missed you, too. Now, let’s get this dance started!

THE END!
