Friends Till The End: Nora Buchanan and Renee Buchanan

Palling Around: As two straight-talking redheaded tough cookies, Nora and Renee have been close since 1998, when their Buchanan boys (Bo and Asa, respectively) began giving them trouble. Nora assisted Renee in Renee's search for her son, while Renee stood by Nora's side as her marriage to Bo crumbled. When the ladies found themselves in Las Vegas, they even donned showgirl outfits and performed for a feuding Sam and Asa. Now that was a kick!

Having Their Say: Hillary B. Smith (Nora) and Patricia Elliott (Renee)

Who is the better friend in the on-screen relationship?

Smith: "Renee. For some reason, Renee is always there during Nora's time of need, but in Renee's time of need, they don't give her Nora!"

Elliott: "Nora is such a savvy person that what she needs is to turn to somebody else for help. Some people would do better by avoiding leaning on people, but she needs to be more vulnerable. And she lets Renee help her."

Did you two hit it off right away?

Smith: "Oh, yeah. She's a theater broad, and that's my background. She regales me with stories of her life, and there's no censorship. I always like finding myself sitting next to Patricia on long, boring days because somehow, she's got People magazine and she'd had a relationship with someone in that magazine."

Do you ever crack each other up on the set?

Smith: "No. Once the camera's rolling, she's deeply intense. Off-camera, Patricia is much more fun than Renee."

Elliott: "I need to concentrate. But once the camera's on, [Hillary] and I are very trusting of one another and we can throw in some unscripted, improvised things. We play together."

What does Nora admire about Renee, and vice versa?

Smith: "She puts up with Asa! And what she's been through in her life, and how she's handled it all with her head up."

Elliott: "Nora really gallops through life. She likes to capture it and wrestle it down. She's not daunted by it, and I think that's true of Renee, too."
