- The Bride Will
Wear a Funky Dress
SOM, 5/30/95
Even reluctant brides have to have a wedding dress, and Nora
is no exception.
-
- OLTL's costume designer Susan
Gammie faced a difficult challenge as she designed Nora's most
unusual dress.
-
- "It's a dress that had
to be kind of adaptable, because it's a daytime wedding, it's
her second wedding, it's a spring wedding and it's presumably
a dress her friends have picked out for her," Susan explains.
-
- "It had to be something
that was appropriate for an afternoon church wedding, but everyone
knows that Bo and Nora love rock 'n' roll and their friends have
planned quite a reception for them.
- "So what I set out to
do was design a dress that would have two aspects to it. One,
a more sober, conservative dress, appropriate for church. But
also, a kind of fun rock 'n' roll party dress for later on. It's
kind of a deep lavender silk bolero jacket and skirt.
-
- "It has a contrasting
fuchsia sash to give it a little style. The skirt is very full
and has lots of tulle underneath. Underneath the jacket there's
a marvelous turquoise and lavender sequined strapless bodice.
So when she takes the jacket off the whole nature of the dress
changes completely.
-
- "It really goes from
being a pretty, but basically conservative suit to a really funky,
fun, party and dance dress. It's a late '50s or early '60s design.
I wanted it to reflect the music they love. She's also wearing
long dyed-to-match gloves and a vintage crystal necklace.
-
- "I just wanted it to
be pretty and lighthearted," Susan says, adding, "but
you couldn't think of Nora in a conventional wedding dress. It
would be like oil and water!"
