Asa: If God had meant for women to be attorneys, he wouldn’t have invented the kitchen. (to Clint about Nora)

June 2, 1993

N: (in her office working on case) Come in! Ah. It’s you. (dejected)
B: Well, it’s good to see you too, Nora.
N: Oh, I’m sorry! I’m sorry, I guess I just want one person, just one person, to come in here that isn’t somehow connected to this horrible rape case.
B: I didn’t come here to talk about this case- no, I swear! As a matter of fact, I refuse to talk about this case.
N: Then why are you here?
B: For this. (pulls her to him) Hello.
N: Hello. (kiss)

Bo is giving Nora a massage.
N: Oh, Bo. Oh, if you ever stop what you’re doing, I’ll have to kill you and defend myself on the grounds of very justifiable homicide. (B laughs) Oh, no, no, you’re stopping- oh.
B: I’ll make you a deal. I’ll keep rubbing if you make a promise.
N: Anything. You name it, anything.
B: You’re not going to work twenty-four hours a day on this case. See, look at that- all the tension just right back. Look, come on, relax! You’re a hell of a lawyer, Kevin is lucky to have you. You got him and his buddies out on bail- no sweat. So you’re on a roll- but you’re not going to be worth anything at all if you get sick from just pushing yourself so hard.
N: The problem is- that’s not the problem, Bo.
B: Then what is?
N: I’m thinking of withdrawing as Kevin’s attorney.
B: You think Kevin is guilty?
Nora: No, of course not! As a matter of fact, I truly believe what lawyers are supposed to believe- that people are innocent until proven otherwise!
Bo: But in Kevin’s case, you can make an exception.
N: Oh, Bo, even if Kevin came to me with a full confession, I’d still believe that he was entitled to a good defense.
B: Then why are you backing out on him right now? He needs you, Nora. Is it that you don’t like the idea of working for my family?
N: Oh, no Bo. I guess it’s my family. With me defending Kevin and Hank prosecuting him, where does that leave Rachel? In a free-fire zone, as far as I can tell.(B sighs) Right between her parents fighting an ugly battle over her boyfriend. I just don’t think it’s fair for Rachel to have to go through that kind of hell. I don’t know. I haven’t made a decision yet. But if I do decide to withdraw from the case- I know this isn’t fair to ask, but I have to, Bo. Will that change how you feel about me?
B: I’ll be honest with you, Nora. If you back out of this case, I’m going to be more than upset. I’m going to be, like, devastated. (N has panicked look on face)
N: I can recommend another attorney!
B: Look , Kevin needs the best, you see? You’re the best!
N: Okay. So worst case scenario, I withdraw from the case. Where does that leave us?
B: (laughs in disbelief) Don’t you know I’m head over heels in love with you? When I asked you to move in with me, what did you think, that was just like, a casual offer or something? No, there’s nothing casual about that. I’m nuts about you. You, all of you. Even your strong opinions about what’s right and wrong, you know, which I respect, even sometimes though I don’t quite agree with them, but... You couldn’t get me to walk away from a wonderful thing like we have going, no. You’d have to stop loving me. (she smiles and grabs his face)
N: Well, I can guarantee you, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Because I will always love you, Bo Buchanan. (kiss) Thank you.
B: What, for loving you? That’s easy, baby!
N: No, for understanding. Which I know is a lot less manageable than loving sometimes. It’s a very good thing, and you’re just a really good man.
B: No. (Yes!) (back and forth) It’s the company I keep. (back and forth) (kiss)
N: It’s the company your company keeps.

June 3, 1993

Rachel tells N that B told her about her concern about Kevin. Nora is upset. N: If I defend Kevin, I’m going to be going up against your father in court.
R: I know.
N: Well, sweetheart, your father and I were capable of going to a knock-down drag-out fight overt what kind of mustard we were going to use when we were married, and believe me, we were very capable of that. I mean, can you imagine what kind of a slug-fest this is going to be? I don’t want you caught in between these warring factions.
R: At this point, how I feel really doesn’t matter.
N: When did we get to this point?
R: When Kevin was accused of a rape he didn’t commit. Now, he needs the best lawyer he can get, and I think that’s you.
N: Wait a second. The last time I talked to you, you were thinking that Kevin might be guilty.
R: Well, I took your advice. I stopped thinking. I listened to my heart, and it told me that hell could freeze over and be made into popsicles before Kevin would rape Marty Saybrook or anyone else.
N: Well, that’s a very strong statement, even from the heart.
Nora realizes how much Rachel loves Kevin and agrees to take case.
R: ...and do what you do best- win.
They go to Llanfair.
N: Well, that’s quite a media mob out there.
K: Oh, did they bother you?
R: Actually, I think we bothered them. Whenever they said Ms. Gannon, we both said (in unison) Yes? (laughs) (Kevin says that Bo told him about her doubts.)
N: You Buchanan men, my goodness. You do circle the wagons fast.

Nora tells K she will defend him the others whether he likes it or not. Kevin comes to her office and says okay.

June 4, 1993

Hank comes into Nora’s office.
N: I'm running late- what do you have?
H: Well, I don’t know- I was hoping you could tell me. I found it propped up outside by your door with a couple of keys attached to it- and it says, “Keys to B.B.’s house- if lost, return to Nora Gannon.
N: Oh, (laughs) thanks!
H: So, who’s B.B.? Bridget Bardeaux, Bill Buckley?
N: Actually, I have a thing for B.B. King.
H: You know, somehow I doubt that this belongs to B.B. King.
N: Maybe not.
H: No, my guess is that it belong to Bo Buchanan. But you know, I have to wonder. Why should the keys to Bo Buchanan’s house be returned to Nora Gannon? (she feigns innocence)
N: Is the courthouse copy room open now?
H: Well, if it isn’t, you can use my office. You want the depositions from the students who at the party, right?
N: Yeah, everyone who was at the frat house the night of the rape.
H: Well, you better bring your umbrella.
N: Why?? (rumble of thunder)
H: You know, I forgot, you’re like a mole when you’re working on a case. Nora.
N: What?
H: Take a look out your window.
N: Why? (turns) Ooh! Wow! When did those thunderheads roll in? Oh, bet you Rachel left without her umbrella this morning.
H: I think Rachel’s old enough to come in out of the rain, okay?
N: Why? Do you think I don’t think she is? What, am I being too much of a mother hen?
H: Well, actually you’re becoming worse than me.
N: Ooh!
H: I mean, she’s twenty-one years old and you still insist that she lives with you.
N: Well, I know that I can’t protect her from the world, Hank, but...
H: But you’re trying, right?
N: She’s just got a lot to deal with right now. Her boyfriend has just been accused of rape. Her boyfriend is also white, which is a complication unto itself. Her father is prosecuting him, her mother is defending him, I just think that she’s a little overwhelmed right now!
H: Ah. And that’s why you think she should live at home with you? So you can protect her? Even though she is dying to move into her own place.
N: She isn’t dying to move- she just, I just, I’m afraid of her being alone right now, that’s all.
H: Which is it Nora- are you afraid for her- or for yourself?
N: I’m sorry, I do not know what you mean.
H: Well, maybe you like being tied down by Rachel. Gives you a great excuse to dodge making a very important decision.
N: What decision?
H: I don’t know, Nora. (holds up keys) Why don’t you tell me?
N: You always were very good at asking questions.
H: Is that the question you’re having trouble with? Bo asked you to move in with him.
N: Yes, he has.
H: So, what’s the answer?

Hank and Nora walk into the courtroom.
H: Well, brings back old memories.
N: Mmm. Sure does. The two of us, squaring off.
H: I guess that’s the way we’ve always been. Adversaries.
N: Not just in the courtroom, either.
H: You think that’s the way it will always work out? You just can’t get along with guys, day to day, night to night?
N: I beg your pardon!
H: Oh, come on, Nora. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, why do you keep dodging my question.
N: What question?
H: Are you going to move in with Bo? He asked you, you like him. So what are you waiting for?
N: (sighs) I don’t know!
H: You never agreed to live together?
N: Well, we talked about it, we started to- it just wasn’t an ideal time, the trial...
H: What ideal time? Look, Nora, you are going to die a single, lonely old lady.
N: Thank you. (taken aback) It’s just- moving in with someone is a very big step, and, as you well know, it can be very rough.
H: Yeah, I seem to recall some bumpy moments. You and me. But, with us, it was the pressure of the color of our skin, and that wore us down. But you and Bo don’t seem to have that particular problem. So what else are you worried about?
N: Give me a second, I’ll think of something.
H: Oh, yeah, I’m sure you will. You’re real good at throwing up defenses.
N: I get these real crazy ideas sometimes- I mean, like recently, Hank, I was absolutely positive that I was the driver that forced Bo and Sarah off the road that horrible night, that I was responsible for her death, I mean, that would have put a kink in Bo’s and my relationship, don’t you think?
H: Come on, if you want to throw away this relationship with Bo, fine, be my guest. But don’t make up some ridiculous story, all right.
N: But it didn’t seem ridiculous to me. I mean, I even went so far as to go to the rental agent and find out what kind of car I was driving, because I couldn’t remember.
H: And?
N: It was yellow, it wasn’t blue, so I was off the hook, but still, I was really worried there for a while!
H: Great. So now that you’re off this crazy hook, what other excuses are you going to make not to get together with Bo?
N: I guess I kinda ran out, so I might do it. (pause)
H: Yeah, well I wish you luck- whatever you decide.
N: Thanks. (try to bargain about Marty)

June 7, 1993

Bo is happy that Nora is taking Kevin’s case- the trial is next week. Rachel says she’s her mother’s daughter and tells her to stay at Bo’s.
B: Well, you heard the little lady. Have fun- at Bo’s.
N: Yeah, but I...
B: But what? No, look, hey, before you said that you couldn’t move in with me because you were so worried about Rachel. Now, Rachel seems just peachy to me right now, so I guess you don’t have anything to worry about anymore, do you?
B: You know, not that long ago, you were real close to moving in with me. Now, what are you afraid of? We get along great!
N: Oh, I have a trial to prepare for, a big one. I’m going to be a lot uglier than usual. Bo, you’re not going to want to be around me!
B: No, see, that’s the whole point- I do!
N: I’m going to be a walking legal library.
B: I love burying my nose in a good book!
N: You think so, hmm? All right- I’ll just show you. Come here. Sit. Go ahead, sit down. Say you’re me.
B: You’re me.
N: You’re not going to make this very easy for me, are you? (B shakes head) Fine. Ok. Fine. You are Nora Gannon, attorney at law. I am Bo Buchanan, professional pest.
B: Hey!
N: Quiet! All right, Nora, your twin tasks are to A- prepare a case; B- not be distracted by anything that I, Bo Buchanan, do- got it? (tosses him a law book)
B: No problem.
N: Read! (starts singing)
B: Do you mind?
N: Sorry. Sorry. (pause) Hey, you hungry? I understand they’re having a two-for-one sale on chili dogs at Rod’s Red Hots.
B: I already ate.
N: I happen to have Humphrey Bogart /Lauren Bacall newly discovered version of A Hunchback of Notre Dame.
B: I’ve already seen it.
N: (leans down next to him) Did I ever tell you how much I like ears? I love them. (nibbles at them- Bo drops book, grabs her and pulls her on top of him) You are such a cheater! Nora Gannon would never do this! (they kiss)
B: She just did! (laughs- kiss)

They are laying on her couch.
B: It’s funny, isn’t it? Just a little while ago, your daughter, my nephew were right here on this very couch. Except that Rachel wasn’t a million miles away.
N: Hmm?
B: Hmm?
N: What?
B: What?
N: Oh, did you say something- I’m sorry!
B: (grumbles) Just get up- turn around, turn around! Round we go- and I’ll do this (massage), and you can tell me what’s bothering you.
N: Oh, I was just thinking about...
B: About moving in with me? Listen, if that’s it, I’ll make you a deal right now, okay? I won’t even bring it up again or bug you about it until the trial is already over.
N: And what do I have to do?
B: You just remind me what I just said when I do in fact start bugging you about it again. Okay? Come on, it’s a joke!
N: Oh, that’s not what’s eating me.
B: Well then what is?
N: I don’t know! I can’t even begin to put my finger on it!
B: Well, I think you’ve got pregame jitters right now- look at your desk, it’s just full of work, and you’ve got a professional pest bugging you right now and keeping you away from it!
N: I would much rather be with this pest than win a thousand cases!
B: Really? (she kisses him) Even if you’re never happier or more satisfied than you are when you’re just knocking them out in court?
N: There’s happiness and satisfaction, and then there’s happiness and satisfaction. (kiss) I’ve just been getting this feeling that something bad is going to happen.
B: What, with the trial? Or with us, huh? There’s no way!
N: I just hate the fact that this trial is happening before I’m fully prepared! What if I can’t get Kevin off- what is it going to do to your family if Kevin winds up in prison?
B: If he does, it won’t be because he didn’t have the best lawyer in the whole world fighting for him. And I want you to know something right now.
N: What?
B: I love you. And nothing that anybody or anything says or does, legally or any other way, is ever going to change that.
N: Thank you. I needed to hear that. (hug)

June 8, 1993

Nora is at Kevin’s with the guys talking about their defense. The phone rings.
K: Excuse me, it’s for you. It’s an uncle of mine and his name is Bo.
N: Oh. Excuse me. Hiya Buchanan- what’s up?
B: No, no, no, that’s my line, Gannon. I thought this was supposed to be an early evening, just you and me, a bucket of popcorn, that new movie down at the Tivoli, something to help you forget you’ve been working so hard?
N: You know what I’d really like to do tonight? I’d really like to eat a bowl of chicken soup and curl up with a really good romance novel.
B: Well, that’s something we can do- I’ve got soup, I’ve got a sofa.
N: And a romance novel??
B: That can be arranged- look, why don’t you just come by here just as soon as you’re finished, okay? And I guarantee you, this is something you won’t regret! (hangs up)(N hangs up)
Nora walks into Bo’s house.
N: (yelling) Bo! I’m here. Hello? I’m exhausted, I’m beat up from college boys, but I’m here. (sees elaborate dinner set up) Oh, my word. (drops briefcase) Bo Buchanan- oh, chicken soup! Chicken soup! (tastes it) Ooh, that’s delicious! Well, he complied with one of my wishes, now where’s the other one? Case in point, where is he? Bo?
B: (enters- with accent) You rang?
N: Bo?
B: No. My name is Don Rodriguez (drops something) Cortez.
N: I’m sorry, I must be Goldilocks. I’ve been drinking soup out of someone else’s porridge bowl. I’m supposed to be at Bo Buchanan’s house, I’ve made a terrible mistake.
B: Stop. Stop. Forget about where you are supposed to be, because you are in the right place.
N: Are you sure? I’m here for soup and a good book.
B: Carissima. Tonight, you name is Eloise, you are a court stenographer, and this is your costume. (hands her glasses)
N: That’s it?
B: (still with accent) Tonight, you are not going to read a romance novel. Tonight, you are going to live a romance novel.
N: Leave it where?
B: Tonight, you are going to live a romance novel.
N: Oh.
B: And it will be filled with pulsating animal passion. (kiss)
B: Eloise? Carissima? What is taking you so long?
N: (in a robe and glasses) I took a shower, and now, what can I do to help you?
B: Well, that remains to be seen. I don’t know if your costume is appropriate. I am in need of an expert stenographer. Are you as fast as they say?
N: (drops her robe) Why don’t you judge it for yourself?
B: Eloise, holy guacamole, you are quite beautiful.
N: Have you read any good books lately? (kiss- fade to black) Ole!
B: So, how would you rate your romance novel?
N: It was everything it was supposed to be.
B: Does this mean that I’m going to have to dress up every time we fool around?
N: (laughs) Maybe I’ll just undress. (both look at each other) But that’s the point- we can play, we can be ourselves, we can- relax, it’s just that trusting, it’s that intimate between us, it’s not that awful drunken impersonal thing those fraternity boys call sex.
B: I hope you’re not referring to my nephew right now.
N: No, Kevin says he didn’t have sex with Marty.
B: You think maybe the other three?
N: I don’t believe that Marty was raped. I think Kevin sat it out on the porch and the other three just took what was being offered. But what I believe, I’m not sure I can convince a jury of.
B: Look, if anybody can defend them to the hilt, it’s you.
N: I wish I had as much confidence in me as you do. Their lives are in my hands.
B: And they’re lucky to have you. I have that from a very good source that’s very close to this case. He thinks you’re terrific.
N: Who?
B: It’s this guy named Rodrigo. (kiss)
N: What would I do without Rodrigo? What would I do without you? (kiss- fade to black)

June 11, 1993

B: (walking into church) Listen, thanks for coming with me today. It means the world to Kevin and you know it means the world to me.
N: You’ll come with me to synagogue someday. (sees Renée and Asa) Well, it’s incredible who will sit next to each other in church. God really does work in mysterious ways.

June 14, 1993

Previously (a special report) Bo has disagreed with Nora’s opinion on Kevin’s case after he talked to Marty.
B: Don’t you think you’re overreacting just a little bit?
N: It is going to be impossible to stay close during the duration of this trial if you keep questioning my legal decisions.(he sighs) I may do things for Kevin that you don’t like. I may do things for Kevin that are totally against the Buchanan family code of honor. If you have a problem with that-
B: The only problem I have right now is this little chip on your shoulder.
N: I don’t have a chip on my shoulder! I don’t have a chip on my shoulder. If I’m going to let a man into my life, I need him to have complete faith in me as a person as well as a professional. If you’re not up for that-
B: Just wait a minute- if you’re going to let a man into you life? I think we’ve gone a little too far right now. I may question your judgment from time to time- I expect you to question my judgment. If it’s something that you don’t agree with, that’s called mutual respect! I respect you, personally, professionally, every other way! Okay, you’re Kevin’s attorney- so from now on, you can handle his case the way you see fit. Is that a deal?
N: Thank you. (goes to shake his hand- he grabs it and hugs her- kiss)
B: Let a man?? (laughs)
N: I think we just had our first lovers’ quarrel! (laughs)
N: (walking into Bo’s house) You are so incredibly stubborn! That was our first official fight!
B: Wrong, wrong.
N: What do you mean, wrong?
B: That was a lover’s spat. A spat is not a fight. This (unrolls blueprint) is going to be our first official fight.
N: What is? What are you talking about?
B: I’m gonna go back on my word, that’s all. (rolls up sleeves) I’m a natural born liar. Then all the fireworks can start.
N: Okay. Okay, you got my adrenaline pumping now- (rolls up sleeves) what are you talking about, Buchanan?
B: This.
N: What, are you remodeling the kitchen?
B: No, the entire house.
N: Why?
B: Look at this, they even got these cute little cutout things for all the furniture. You just move it all around the grid, (N interested) and we can decide exactly where we want everything when you move in with me.
N: Well, I- you did lie to me.
B: I just told you-
N: No, you gave me your word that you weren’t going to pressure me about moving in with you until after the trial- you even swore to me!
B: What can I say? Once a Buchanan, always a Buchanan.
N: Well, you can say that again!
B: Once a Buchanan, always...
N: Oh, shut up and- kiss me. (he comes over and kisses her)
B: Is that a yes?
N: It’s a maybe.
B: Nora!
N: Oh, come on- I just have to sleep on it.
B: (kiss) At least it’s not a no- but you know something?
N: What?
B: You’re not gonna get much sleep! (fade to black)

June 15, 1933

Bo comes out and finds a note from Nora.
B: Nora? Where are you?
N: (in note) I do love you, Bo. Please never doubt that. You once told me I’d given you a reason to wake up in the morning. Well, you’ve given me a reason to want to go to bed every night. But for now, with the trial about to start and your flying out to see your brother soon, this is the wrong time for me to move in with you. I want us to have a fair shot, with nothing standing in our way. And then there’s Rachel to consider- I’m so sorry. Love, Nora. (Bo is upset)
Rachel is talking to Nora about living on her own.
R: It’s just time.
N: (about to cry- hugs her) Oh, my baby. Oh, my baby! Can’t you just give me a few more decades, please, just some years, months, weeks, days?
R: I’m sorry.
N: I guess it’s time for the little bird to fly the nest- ooh, I hate that phrase!
R: Hey, you don’t have to end up alone. What about you and Bo? Have you guys talked about your future?
N: Yeah.
R: And?
N: Oh, he asked me to move in with him.
R: Well, that’s great!
N: You think so?
R: It’s perfect!
N: I’m not so sure.
R: Why not- and you can’t use me as an excuse.
N: Well it’s too late, I already did. Oh, it’s that, and- we haven’t been dating that long, you know.
R: Long enough for you to know how you feel about him.
N: If Kevin is found guilty, Bo could blame me, and then everything that we’ve worked just goes right down the drain.
R: Mom...
N: No! No, the timing is just not right, and I already told him that in a note.
R: Listen to me. You cannot connect your life with Bo with what happens with Kevin. You are going to do your best. I know that and Bo knows that. But, if a jury does find Kevin guilty, I’m not going to blame you, and neither will Bo if he really loves you.
N: Well, I guess you’re right, you know? But...
R: No buts. Aren’t you the one who has always told me to take charge of my life?
N: Well, yes, but...
R: And do what’s best for me? Well, I think it’s time that you took a little of your own advice.
Bo is sitting on his couch. A knock and a yell of, “special delivery.”
B: Special delivery? (goes and opens door) What the? (Nora is being carried in on a couch with a train case and examining her nails)
Men: Where do you want her?
B: Uh, just set her down anywhere.
N: Oh no, not here. Over there. Much better. (Something) goes better. Okay. Thank you, gentleman.
B: Thank you. Nora, what’s going on?
N: Well, I had this little change of heart. I’m moving in!
B: And this is for you guys for all that special handling. I’ll take a delivery like this any day of the week.
M: Thanks a lot, pal. And, enjoy yourself.
B: Oh, I will. Thanks, guys. (closes door- spins around) Yesss! (N is laughing) I can’t believe this! You did it! What about everything you said in the note?
N: Oh, forget the note!
B: Forgotten!
N: Good! (kiss) Hold on. Now that I’m here, you having second thoughts?
B: Get out of here!
N: Speak now or forever hold your peace! I mean it!
B: Let’s get you unpacked, all right?
N: No, no, no- wait a minute. We just have to clear up one thing first, okay?.
B: You can have the left side of the bed- that’s not a problem!
N: No, you don’t understand. You see, I want you to know that this can just be a trial run, just a test run, because if you get sick of me and you want to throw me out, I kept my place at the Palace, okay?
B: Still hedging your bets, aren’t you? It’ll work. This is just the beginning, little lady. It’s going to be perfect! (kiss)
N: I hope you feel that way a week from now.
B: Why wouldn’t I?
N: Because, I have an incredible trial to prepare for, you know? Non-stop.
B: Yeah, Kevin’s trial. I wouldn’t expect anything other than that.
N: No, Bo, you don’t understand, you see. I’m going to take over your entire house, I’m going to turn it into a war room. There’s going to be files all over the place.
B: Look, I’m behind you 110%.
N: Thank you. Because I’m not going to give up fighting until I get a jury to find Kevin not guilty.
N: (looking at plans) My desk could go over here, and then just put the files all along this wall here.
B: Yeah, but that means that we would have to move every stick of furniture in the study out of the study.
N: I didn’t come empty handed, I’m sorry.
B: You? No, I expected a caravan of trucks to pull up.
N: Oh, well, this is just the first shipment. (look of shock) Kidding. Kidding. (laughs)
B: I still think maybe we oughta have a contractor put on a couple of extra wings.ep N: That’s a great idea, let’s just blow out this wall, get an indoor pool, maybe an indoor squash court, I need to stay in shape.ep B: Excuse me, how about a compromise, okay?
N: Oh, well, good lawyers don’t mind talking, so (snakes her arms around his waist)- what’s on your mind, Buchanan?
B: This. (kisses her- fall behind her files)
N: You drive a hard bargain.
B: Maybe we better move this negotiation into our bedroom.
N: Our bedroom. Oh God, I like the sound of that. (phone rings)
B: Just when the negotiations were heating up! (it’s Joey for Nora- she had her calls forwarded)
