H is talking to his cops about Todd.
N: (enters) Hey, hey! I think we’ve got a lead.
H: Nora, not now, I’m in the middle of something.
P: Forget the map, forget anything else you’ve heard, Hank, we’ve come up with a lead. We think we know where Todd’s taken Rebecca.
P: Apparently Todd associates a lot of good times with this summer house.
N: The house belonged to his mother and his stepfather, and it’s very important to him.
H: Oh, yeah. According to that paragon of honesty, Zach Rosen.
P: Zach had no reason to lie to us, Hank.
H: Give me a break! The man is in prison, and you helped put him there.
N: We’re not saying that he’s a changed man.
P: And he did seem sincere, he knows what Todd might do to Rebecca if we don’t find him first.
H: All right, fine. Assuming that he is telling the truth, what's so special about this summer house?
P: Todd’s always thought of it as this great place, a long way from his father and his trouble at home.
N: He ran away from camp just to be there, to be with his mother.
H: And where is there? Did Zach forget to tell you that fact?
P: He only knew that it’s north of here, near one of the Great Lakes, some place in the woods.
H: Oh, that really narrows it down. I mean, Wisconsin, Michigan, upstate New York, Canada, come on, give me a break-
N: Why are you being so negative?
H: I’m not being negative-
N: Yes, you are!
H: I’m being realistic. Now, look, I’m not just, I’m not saying you guys didn’t give it a good try-
P: Try? Hank, we’re giving you your first real lead here!
H: And where exactly does it lead? The house could be anywhere.
N: Well, Zach said it was on a river.
H: What river, Nora? The Hudson river, one of the other 200 rivers between here and the Great Lakes?
P: Well, try calling Todd’s father in Chicago. He might-
H: Come on, Powell, we just had this conversation. Todd’s old man washed his hands of the kid the day he was thrown into prison. He’s been uncooperative from the very star, now-
N: The stepfather, call the stepfather. I know the mother’s dead, but you could contact the stepfather.
H: Well, I would really like to, but (Phone rings)- could you get that for me, please?- What’s the guy’s name? Where does he live? Assuming that he is alive.
Cop: Excuse me, Mr. Gannon, you need to hear this.
H: Excuse me. Thank you. Yeah, yeah, this is Gannon. Where? When did this happen? Got it, I’m on my way.
P: What is it? Is is something about Todd?
N: Hank. You’ve got to tell us, Hank.
H: All right, look. A chambermaid in some motel, upstate New York, reported a break-in. A young man and a young woman maybe fitting the description of Todd and Rebecca, holed up in one of the rooms.
N: Were the police able to do anything, were they able to get there in time?
H: No, no, they got away before the cops got there. But they stole a car, and their trail is still warm, and I am on my way.
P: With me.
N: With me, too.
H: I don’t think so.
N: Well, don’t think you’re going anywhere without us.
H: Now, we’ve got everybody involved in this manhunt from the FBI to the state police. We’ve got bloodhounds, we’ve got helicopters, infrared scanners. I think we can manage without your help.
N: Maybe. But Powell and I have something that no one else has. Knowledge of Todd.
P: She’s right, Hank, we know the guy, what sets him off, what calms him down.
N: Maybe we could talk him out of- talk him into releasing Rebecca.
H: What is the the matter with you two, huh? Look, have you forgotten, the man is armed and dangerous. He killed Suede, remember?
P: Why do you think we want to go with you? To make sure Rebecca doesn’t become his next victim!
H: Oh, really? So you can be his next victim? Maybe even Nora? Now, look. You two are on this man’s hit list. Now, it’s my responsibility, you go get registered for school, you go home with Bo.
N: Bo’s not even here, you just wait a minute, Hank Gannon. This is no more your responsibility than it is ours!
H: I am the district attorney, and I’m the one who put that man in prison.
N: And Todd just took Rebecca out of your jurisdiction. They’re not even in this state. It’s a personal stake for you just as much as it is for us.
P: We all want the same thing, Hank. Find Todd before he hurts someone else.
H: Yeah, yeah, sure, I want to be there when they grab the guy.
P: Okay, then take us.
H: No! Mercer, get over there and tell them to get that chopper started, I’m out of here. You two stay put, and that is final. Don, you make sure they stay put, especially this one (Nora).

Renee: Oh, thank god there’s finally a break in the case.
P: Well, it’s only a lead, Renee. If the police blow it and let Todd get away again-
R: They won’t! Will they, Nora?
N: Well, we certainly hope not, but Todd has managed to avoid the police before.
R: Not this time. I feel it. Todd cannot cover his tracks forever.
Rachel: Mom. Mom, hi.
N: Hi, sweetheart.
R: Hey, have you heard anything about Rebecca and Todd?
N: Uh, yes, honey, but it’s just a lead.
P: But your father wouldn’t let us go with him, we’re supposed to trust in the powers that be.
K: Yeah, why? They haven’t done too much yet.
Angela: (enters) You’re talking about Rebecca, aren’t you?
N: Why don’t we all sit down here?
A: Look, I don’t care what you people think of me, but I am worried sick about Rebecca. Now, I’ve been to the police, and they don’t know a thing, so if you know something, could you please tell me? I care about her just as much as anyone here.
P: If you care so much about her, why did you go out of you way to ruin her life.
N: Powell.
P: No, I want her to tell me. If it weren’t for you, Rebecca wouldn’t be so desperate to believe in someone, and she certainly wouldn’t have picked Todd Manning.
A: Don’t you think I know that? What I did to Rebecca, I will have to live with for the rest of my life, so don’t you dare think for one second that I’ve stopped caring about her, because Rebecca, she’s the dearest and sweetest girl I have ever known.
P: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean- Nora, it can’t hurt any, can it?
N: No, it might even help, go ahead, tell her.
P: It looks like 2 people matching Todd and Rebecca’s description were spotted yesterday in a motel in Upstate New York.
A: Thank god she's alive.
N: Oh, don’t worry about that, Todd needs her to be alive.
Renee: My theory is that Todd’s needs change like the weather.
Rachel: Yeah, well, I just hope the police don’t rush after Todd and let Rebecca get court in the crossfire.
P: Oh, man. If only there were something I could do for her.

January 21, 1994

N: Someone’s going to find Todd and Rebecca, it’s just a matter of time.
P: Yeah, but is Rebecca going to be alive when they do? I’m just sick of sitting around here waiting.
B: Good news.
N: What?
B: I just talked to Nick Manzo, he’s on his way up to meet Hank up in New York at that motel room.
N: They placed them there?
B: The fingerprints they found matched Todd’s, so they were definitely there.
N: Oh, great. See, I told you, they’ll probably have him cornered by the end of the day.
P: Todd’s not going to give up without a fight. They’ve got to talk him into letting Rebecca go.
N: Powell, I’m sure that Hank has got-
P: Hank is good, Nora, but he doesn’t know Todd like I do.
N: What, are you suggesting that you be the one to negotiate with him?
B: Powell, there are people specially trained for those kinds of things-
P: I don’t care, I still have a better chance of getting through to him. Now, I’m not going to let Rebecca get hurt! We’ve just got to find out where he’s taken her.

Angela comes in and tells them about Rebecca’s call.
B: Are you sure you never changed the name?
A: Positive. I ran that place from the beginning to the end. It was always called the Tabernacle of Joy.
P: Did she say anything else, any other possible clues.
A: No, none that I can remember, anyway. She said that she was not hurt…
N: Thank goodness.
A: And that she was sorry about our falling out, and then she made that weird reference to the Tabernacle.
B: The tabernacle of faith, tabernacle of joy- what’s she trying to tell us?
P: Well, we know that’s where he kidnapped her.
B: Maybe she’s saying that there’s something there that will lead us to where they are now.
N: Maybe they left something behind, or maybe Rebecca left as a clue?
B: Well, there’s only one way to find out. We’ve got to search the place.
P: What are we waiting for? Let’s do it. Come on.
B: Any luck in here?
N: No, no, nothing.
A: All I found were useless old papers of mine.
B: Powell?
P: Just a few pamphlets.
B: There’s nothing out there but a bunch of folding chairs and empty collection baskets.
A: Looks like a dead end.
P: Well, let’s not just give up. We’ve obviously missed something.
N: Tabernacle of Joy. I mean, that’s got to be the one, isn’t that what she kept saying?
B: Maybe the clue isn’t in the building, maybe it’s in the name itself, Tabernacle of Joy.
P: You mean, Rebecca-
B: I mean, the name is the clue. I’ll be back in a second.
N: Where are you going?
B: I’m going to go out to the car and get something. I have a hunch. (exit)ep N: He has a hunch.
N: Great, maps. Now, what’s your hunch?
B: All right, the clue is Tabernacle of Joy, now maybe there’s a town or a lake or road with either tabernacle or joy in the name.
A: Sounds like a possibility.
B: All right, Powell, you and I will check out New York. Honey, you want to look at Pennsylvania?
N: Sure?
B: Angela, Canada.
N: Hey, what was the name of the motel where they were cited?
B: It was near Jamestown, New York, just south of Chautauqua. It’s a resort area.
N: Oh, right, right, right. Powell, why don’t you get on that?
P: I’m on it.
A: You know, it could be something religious, too. Maybe a town that has a famous tabernacle.
N: Or maybe the name of the town is connected to religion, like Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
B: Maybe, yeah. Write that down, honey.
P: Whoa, whoa, whoa, I’ve got something better. Check this out. A town in upstate New York near Jamestown called Mount Joy. Joy.
A: That’s the word she kept saying, joy.
B: Yep. That could be it. (circles it)

January 24, 1994

B: I don’t see another town on this map that Rebecca could have meant.
A: No, I know she meant Mount Joy, why would she keep talking about the Tabernacle of Joy the way she did?
P: Yeah, Zach said the summer house Todd talked about was near a great lake and by a river.
B: Well, Mount Joy’s a river resort, plus it’s close to where they were spotted.
N: Okay, let’s say it’s Mount Joy. Okay? Now what?
A: We call the cops and tell them what we know.
B: No, no, no.
A: Bo, we have to!
B: No police. No police.
N: Bo, come on! You’ve got to call the police.
B: Listen to me, listen to me, please. I have a better plan.
N: Oh, no. No vigilante crusading, Bo.
A: Bo, I want the cops involved. Todd is dangerous.
P: Yeah, Bo, we have to notify the police.
B: Please, please, please, will you just hear me out? All right? The FBI, the highway patrol, every police department from every little town in there is going to be out en mass, all right? They’re all going to be looking for this escaped convict and his hostage. That means like 2 to 300 people up there, cops with guns that are probably thinking about getting some citations for valor.
A: No, no, they would coordinate their search effort with the FBI.
N: They would also try to do hostage negotiation.
B: Okay, okay, that might be. But do you really want, like dozens of police cars with sirens blaring, lights flashing, helicopters flying around, gas canisters, high-powered rifles, you want to bring all of that down on Rebecca?
P: No way!
A: Sooner or later, Todd is going to- he’s going to want to get rid of Rebecca, so the faster we get a hostage negotiation team in there, the faster she will be saved.
B: Oh, right, that’s if everything goes smoothly, but one little slip, and all of a sudden, we’re right back to the cops and their guns and the tear gas.
P: And Todd holding a gun against Rebecca. I agree, no cops.
N: What are you talking about? You’re just going to go busting in there and get your head blown off? Bo, Todd’s got a gun!
P: He’ll have to deal with the two of us, though. Bo, I’m going with you, Bo, I hope you know that.
A: Wait a second, Rebecca is a hostage. The FBI can get in there-
B: All right, all right, look- These hostage teams, they usually follow a standard procedure, they start off very low key, they want to keep the guy talking, hoping that they’ll just wear him down, but sometimes things just- they don’t work out like that.
N: Bo, I realize-
B: Do you remember the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas?
N: Yeah- Bo, I’m scared, all right? I mean, I know you’ve taken on Todd before, but-
B: No, honey, look, I’m going to be careful, I’m going to be careful, but first I’ve got to get there.
N: How do we know this place is even in Mount Joy?
A: It has to be.
N: All right, well then, fine, let’s say it is in Mount Joy, all right, there must be 2000 houses up and down that river.
P: Bo, we don’t even know the name of Todd’s stepfather.
B: I can find it. Look, Powell, do me a favor, all right? I want you to gas up my car, pick up some sandwiches and some coffee for us, all right? I’ll meet you back here.
P: Coffee and sandwiches for two.
N: Powell!
P: I’m going, Nora. (exits)
N: (to A) Aren’t you the one who used to know how to pray for faith?

B: (on phone) Yes, this is for Chicago, a brokerage house. Manning and Manning.
B: Mr. Manning?
M: This is he.
B: This is Bo Buchanan.
M: What do you want?
B: You remember me, huh?
M: Nora Gannon’s fiancé, how could I forget. I’m very busy, Mr. Buchanan. I assume this has something to do with Todd. I know he broke out, they called me, but I don’t know anything about where he might be.
B: Mr. Manning, it’s very important that we find your son.
A: Tell him about Rebecca.
M: I have no son. My son died the day they sentenced him to prison. Don’t bother me again.
B: Well, this time Todd’s taken a hostage. It’s a young girl.
M: I don’t really care-
B: Her life is in danger right now because of your son, whether you want to admit that he’s your son or not. Do you want her on your conscience along with whatever else it is that probably keeps you up all night? Now look, we just have one question for you, all right, you answer that, it’s not even about Todd.
M: Who is it about?
B: His mother. I need the name of the man that she married.
M: After she ran out on Todd and me? I can’t even remember-
B: Come on, Manning. Now, she married the man. You’ve got to remember his name.
B: Come on, Manning, what’s the man’s name?
M: Heath. Charles Heath. He live in western New York.
B: Could he have had a summer place in Mount Joy?
M: He could have had a summer place in Cherynoble for all I care. And it’s not going to help you with Todd, because I never allowed him to have any contact with his mother after she left us. So he never could have gone to any of Charles Heath’s summer place, if it even exists.
B: He ran away to her from camp one, didn’t he?
M: Yes, but I had him sent home immediately, and I have no reason to think he was at any summer place.
B: Maybe you ought to come with us, Manning. Maybe you can talk your son into turning himself in rather than getting himself killed.
M: I thought I made it clear. My son is already dead. (hangs up)
B: That’s some dad.
A: Did he tell you anything?
B: Yeah, yep, he sure did. You know, I remember during the trial, Joey saying that seeing Manning almost made him feels sorry for Todd.
N: The key work being almost.
B: Yeah. (on phone) Yeah, it’s for Mount Joy, Charles Heath, H-E-A-T-H. Charles Heath, Jr., yes, that’s great. Do you have an address on that? 14 River Road. Okay, thank you. Thank you very much. (hangs up) Okay, that’s it. As soon as Powell gets back, we’re on our way.

N and A are at Wanda’s.
N: Do you want to eat something? You haven’t eaten anything all day, you should eat.
A: I can’t eat. Why doesn’t she get off the phone already so we can call Bo and Powell?
N: You know what? I think maybe you should relax, because I don’t even think that Bo and Powell are anywhere even near Mount Joy yet. Let me give you a tip. I’m a really terrific worrier, and I can tell just by looking at you that you’re a first-timer on this, aren’t you?
A: I never had any one to worry about before. She’s like a daughter to me.
N: She’s going to be fine, Angela. The key to good worrying is pace. No, really, it’s absolutely crucial that you not burn all of your panic fuel within the first few hours of what is bound to be a round-the-clock anxiety attack.
A: How can you joke at a time like this?
N: Because I’m scared to death.
N hangs up phone.
N: Well, no one’s answering Bo’s car phone, not yet, and unfortunately, I have to go.
A: To where?
N: I have to be in court, I’m sorry. Hey! How are you? I haven’t seen you since-
Marty: Suede’s memorial.
N: Yeah.
M: I went down south with him, spent some time with the family, he has a sister there.
N: How was the funeral?
M: Sad. I’ve been to 2 services for him now, and I still can’t believe he’s gone.
N: Yeah, I know what you mean.
M: What about you?
N: Me, what about me? Why what about me?
M: Uh, you seem a little nervous.
N: Well, we think we’ve gotten a lead about where Todd has Rebecca.
Jason: Well, that’s great.
N: Yeah, Bo was able to get some information out of Mr. Manning, so-
M: Bo?
J: Hey, at least somebody’s doing something useful.
N: Really.
A: Excuse me. The more I hear about this, the more nervous I get.
P: Question.
B: Shoot.
P: Were you an Indy driver in a former life?
B: I did a little car racing when I was younger. We did make good time, didn’t we? (they go over plan) You got your seat belt on?
P: The way you’ve been burning up the road, I wish I could weld it shut.
B: Let’s go.

January 25, 1994

N: (in office, on phone) I just got back from court right now, it was a complete waste of time. Angela, Angela, relax. I am not planning to budge from this phone until I get a call from Bo and Powell. Well, of course I will keep you- I’ll let you know everything, meanwhile- can I get off the phone now, because they’re probably in Mount Joy by now and they’re trying to get through. Okay. (hangs up-knock) Marty! Well, this is a surprise.
M: Same here, Angela said that you had a court case today.
N: Uh, yes, well, it was postponed, and I’m still, I’m just, I’m crazy busy, so, um, if you don’t mind.
M: Oh, sure, I, um, just stopped by to give this to your secretary so you could look over them. They’re Suede’s.
N: Oh. Well, what am I looking for?
M: Make sure- if you could find a way that Suede’s sister inherits my share of the royalties for Teach Me How to Dream. She needs the money, I don’t.
N: Will do. (phone rings) Nora Gannon. Oh, hi, Mr. Franklin. Uh, no, I’m sorry, I don’t know whether that contract has come in or not, you know what, let me transfer you to Jill, and she will be able to help you, all right? Please hold. Jill, Mr. Franklin is on the line, and he needs to know about that contract coming through. Can you handle this, and also, please keep the line open. Thank you. (hangs up)
M: Nora, what’s going on, why are you so jumpy?
N: Me? Oh, no, I’m just as calm as any lawyer with about six cups of coffee in her.
M: Why do I get the weird feeling you’re not telling me something? Something about Bo’s plan to find Todd and Rebecca? That’s what’s going on, isn’t it? (N closes door)
N: Uh, Bo and Powell decided to follow up that lead about where Todd might be, and I’m just waiting for the phone call to tell me what happened.
M: Can’t you ask the police to find out what’s going on?
N: Uh, not really.
M: Why?
N: I mean, it’s not, uh, exactly involved yet.
M: What? Are you telling me that Bo and Powell went after Todd?
N: Yeah-
M: You’re sitting here next to the phone twiddling your thumbs while a college kid and your fiancé go after a cold-blooded murderer by themselves??
N: Marty-
M: This is insanity! You of all people should know how dangerous Todd is, how could you let Bo and Powell try something that stupid?

B and Powell are ready to go in.

M: Bo and Powell went after Todd alone?
N: It’s a long shot that Todd and Rebecca are even at this house in Mount Joy.
M: Yeah, and it was a long shot that Todd escaped from jail. He jumped from a moving ambulance and escaped in a patrol car!
N: All right, let’s say they’re at this house in Mount Joy! Bo and Powell think that they can talk Todd into turning himself in, so Rebecca won’t be hurt.
M: Oh, they’re going to reason with the animal! Todd killed Suede, he raped me, he tried to rape you, then he came after me again because he didn’t think he hurt me enough the first time. My God, how can you reason with someone like that?
N: Bo and Powell-
M: Listen, he’s a maniac! The police have to know what’s going on, and if you’re not going to call them right now, I will!ep N: No!! What about Rebecca?
M: That’s who I’m thinking of-
N: No, no, think about Rebecca. What happens to Rebecca when a SWAT team comes busting in there on her and Todd with guns blazing?
M: Yeah, but when Bo and Powell show up, just Todd will have a gun, right?
N: The whole reason why Bo and Powell are doing this is to avoid the bloodshed! Besides, once Bo gets an idea into his head, who could stop him, you know? We have to let them do it their way, and we’ve got to keep the police out of it.
H: (knocks, enters) Hello, Nora. Marty.

R and T are arguing about him killing both of them in the back room. P tries to talk to T through the door. T pulls Powell in as Bo is sneaking in a window. P says he’s here on behalf of his father.

H: What’s all the shouting about?
M: I was, um, just upset about papers I had to bring for Nora to look at for Suede.
H: Look, Nora, I was wondering if you’ve got any new leads on where Todd Manning might be.
N: Wish I had. It’s killing me sitting around here not knowing anything.
H: Well, I’m assuming that if either one of you does hear anything, you’ll let me know on the double?
N: Absolutely.
M: Sure.
H: You know, Todd Manning, he’s responsible for one death already. As long as he’s on the loose, it could happen again.
N: Hank, we’re well aware of that.
H: Okay. Listen, thank you for your time. Good evening, ladies. (exits)
N: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey- (puts arm around Marty) It’s okay.
M: Todd could kill someone else. Then someone else could be left behind, someone else will be crying-
N: Bo’s going to do what he said he was going to do, he’s going to stop Todd.
M: You’re afraid, too, you’re just as afraid as I am.
N: Well, I’ll admit, I certainly wasn’t pleased when Bo nixed the idea of bringing the police in. But, I promised I’d back him on this, and that’s what I’m going to do. And to tell you the truth, yeah- I’m scared out of my mind.

R tries to convince T he is still good. T scoffs at her. P convinces T to let R go. T kisses R on the forehead and lets her go. T says he would rather die than be caught and go to prison. P tries to convince him to turn himself in. B steps on a creaky floorboard.
