B: What angle did Manning go in the river? Out and down. By the time I gave up diving for him, I’d drifted like 60 yards down the river.
Police: Yeah, well, even with good solid moon, you still can’t see very much. Not counting how cold it is out there.

N, H and M enter.
N: Oh, my God, oh my God, oh my God, you’re freezing cold!
B: Yeah, but at least I can feel my fingers again. What are you doing here, honey?
N: Where’s Powell? What about Todd?
B: Powell is fine, it’s all over. Todd and I got into it over the gun, I was trying to get it away from him, and it went off. He was shot, and he went in the river. I went in after him to try to pull him out.
M: What?
H: Well, what happened? Where is Manning?
Police: Anybody mind if I ask who all you people are?
B: Oh, yeah, sorry, I’m sorry, everybody say hello to Chief Wilson of the Mount Joy police department.
H: Hello, chief. Hank Gannon, district attorney of Llantano County, Pennsylvania. I’m the man who put Todd Manning in prison in the first place.
N: And I’m this one’s fiancée. Are you sure you’re warm enough, I mean, look at this little blanket.
B: Yeah, it’s amazing
H: Oh, and excuse me, this is Marty Saybrooke, unfortunately one of Todd manning’s victims.
W: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that, maam.
M: Where is Todd?
W: Well, at this time, we can only assume that he’s dead.
H: What about Rebecca Lewis? She came through okay, didn’t she?
B: Well, Rebecca wasn’t hurt. Not physically, anyway.
H: Well, Bo, what made you think that you and Powell could do it, huh? Two unarmed amateurs. Now, what’s it going to take to teach you some respect for the police?
N: Now, Hank, why don’t you just back off? He’s tired, he’s cold, and you’re only making him more miserable.
H: Well, maybe somebody should. All right, all right, look, just forget it. Well, at least it worked out. I still don’t believe you did it.
N: I still don’t believe you went into the river after Todd.
B: When I hit that water, I didn’t believe it either, but Rebecca- I thought she was going to jump in the river after him, I knew she couldn’t make it, so I just-
M asks the officer if he is sure. She leaves.
N: I think I better go see to Marty.
H: No, Nora- I’ve got this one, okay? Besides, looks like Bo could use all the body heat he could get.
N: Thanks.
B: You want to crawl in here with me, honey?
N: And have my clothes smell like that river? No, thank you. (kiss)
B: What was that for?
N: For being a big, dumb galoot. For scaring me half to death. For taking chances. And for still being alive.
Police: The gun was only fired one time to your knowledge?
B: Right.
N: Oh, if that gun had been turned an inch or two farther away.
Police; Well, that’s about it, I guess. I still have to talk to Miss Lewis, though.

B volunteers to go get Rebecca. N wraps her scarf around him. N is staring at him.
B: What? What? What is it? Honey, look, I’m fine, I’m all right, I’m still in one piece, one frozen piece, but- Why do you keep looking at me like that?
N: I’m just thinking.
B: Look, I know how you feel about Powell and me taking off on our own without any protection, without any backup, and I’m really sorry that I upset you, but I really have no regrets.
N: Well, that’s nice. Now, do you want to know what i was thinking?
B: Do I?
N: I was thinking that you set off on this stupid, dangerous mission-
B: See, I knew exactly-
N: No, Bo, Bo, Bo, Bo, Bo, Bo, Bo, Bo. That you set off on this mission to help Powell and Rebecca, two people you hardly know, and two people you owe nothing to-
B: Well, that has nothing to do with it.
N: That’s my point exactly. You had to do it because it was the right thing to do.
B: Yeah, well, that’s the way it’s supposed to be.
N: Yeah, but it hardly ever is. And you’re just the most incredible man I’ve ever met. (kiss)
B: And that’s it? No lecture?
N: No lecture. A request.
B: You want to me to sing ‘Melancholy Baby’?
N: Yeah, if you just promise to do it at home. Will you promise me, at least for the next day or two, will you promise me that we can just lock ourselves away in our own house, doing nothing but eating popcorn and watching movies, doing nothing more exciting than trying not to slip in the shower?
B: Oh, God, that sounds great. (kiss)

B and N look after Rebecca. N takes R into the house. H asks R how she is, and so does M. Police come in and announce they found “Todd’s” body. H asks for dry clothes for Bo. They leave R and M inside. M questions R’s feelings. H asks B and P to come id T’s body tomorrow.

P: Listen, Bo, I don’t know how to begin to thank you.
B: No, you have nothing to thank me for. I’m just glad we were able to get Rebecca out of this mess, together.
P: Well, at least she’s all right.
N: Thank God you both are, too.
B: I don’t care what the police say, I think we did the right thing coming up here. You saved my life when you jumped Todd.
P: I just wish I could have done more, I wasn’t much good to anyone after I hit my head.
N: How are you feeling?
P: I’ll be okay.
B: Well, you take care of yourself, look, thank you. (shakes hand)
P: Man, you are freezing.
N: Will you go and get your dry clothes on now?
B: Kvetch, kvetch, kvetch. (Pronounces wrong)
N: It’s kvetch, kvetch, kvetch- you’re not even close, get, get out of here, go on. Go on. (B leaves) If anything had ever happened to that man, I don’t know what I would do.
P: Yeah. I kind of guessed.

January 28, 1994

N is in her office. P enters.
N: Hey, I was just reading about you, look at this, look at this headline! You and Bo, I mean, all this- look at this, “Gun Wrestled from Madman”- ooh. And, “Hostage Exchange Made-”
P: Nora, wait, wait- Rebecca needs your help right now.
N: What do you mean, Rebecca needs me? She’s with Renee, this is the safest she’s been in days.
P: No, she isn’t. Yesterday, before we left the river house, I heard Hank talking to her, asking her questions.
N: Well, of course he’s asking her questions, she’s involved, she was very involved.
P: Okay, but she’s not a criminal.
N: What are you talking about?
P: That’s what Hank’s doing right now, he’s charging her with a felony- harboring a fugitive.
N: Powell, harboring a fugitive is when you provide shelter, when you-
P: Todd forced her to do it, but she did do it.
N: Well, we know that she did what she had to do in order to stay alive.
P: What if Hank doesn’t know that?
N: Of course he knows- he’ll understand, he’s got a head, a heart, what more do you need?
P: Okay, okay, what if she did it because she wanted to, because she felt- I don’t know, but it depends on how you look at it. She thought she was doing the right thing, and she brought him food.
N: She did?
P: Yeah, and money, medicine, clothing.
N: She could be charged with a felony.
P: That’s what happening, I know Rebecca, she’s not going to lie.
N: You said Hank hadn’t talked to her yet?
P: He’s talking to her right now- at least, that’s what his secretary said, we were talking about me being in the paper and all that, and she told me that Hank had already gone over to see Rebecca.
N: To question her?
P: Yeah, about her role in Todd’s escape.
N: (on phone) Jill? Yeah, I have a three o’clock appointment…
P: She can’t land in prison like I did for making a mistake, for believing in Todd. Nora, I’ve been in prison- Rebecca won’t last a day, she shouldn’t even be there one night.
N: I’ll do what I can. Let's go.

H wants to take R “downtown”.
R: Please, Mr. Gannon, couldn’t we talk here? I would really rather not go to a police station.
RB: Are you charging her?
R: Is that what’s happening?
H: Harboring a fugitive is a felony in this state.
R: But I only did what I thought-
RB: Don’t you say another word until you see a lawyer.
H: You do have the right to call a lawyer. Is that what you want to do?
N: No need to call a lawyer, the lawyer’s here.
H: You are Rebecca’s attorney?
N: That’s right. Right? (R nods)
H: Well, good. Then we- we don’t have do beat around the bush, do we?
N: That’s something that you’re not known for doing- except for maybe once or twice.
H: We have a charge pending here.
N: Which is?
H: Harboring a fugitive, obstruction of justice.
R: All I did was try to help- I showed mercy. The Bible teaches us-
H: We’re not talking about showing mercy or having pity here.
N: Oh really? Sure could have fooled me. Can I see you in the hallway, Hank, please?
H: What, you’re ordering me around here?
N: Something I was born to do. Come on, tough guy. (go in hall)
H: Boy, you really just jumped right in there, didn’t you, baby?
N: Are things a little slow in your office, Hank?
H: What are you talking about?
N: You have nothing better to do than to come down here and terrorize this poor girl?
H: That poor little girl gave Todd Manning a place to hide.
N: Let the court be aware that she was forced to.
H: She also brought him some food, and nobody forced her to do that!
N: Give me your hungry and I shall feed them.
H: You’re doing scripture now?
N: That’s what she lives by, Hank.
H: Nora, maybe you don’t realize this, maybe you’re not aware, but she also provided him with clothes, money, medicine, and all the time, she had ample opportunity to turn him in. Now, baby, this is an airtight case, several felony counts and several felony convictions.
N: Tell me something, Hank. The whole time that you were in there terrorizing her, which you shouldn’t have been doing as a DA, did you ever have eye contact with her, that you should have been doing?
H: Give me a break! The woman helped a murderer, a rapist.
N: Who is very clever and very manipulative. He was smart enough to fool me, you think that’s easy?
H: Personally?
N: You think I’m easy to fool?
H: Well, it depends on who’s trying, Nora. It’s doable.
N: Oh, dream on, Hank. The point is, the man fooled me, he’s fooled Kevin, he’s fooled a lot of other far more worldly wise and hardened souls than Rebecca Lewis.
H: So what are you driving at?
N: I’m just trying to protect you, Hank.
H: Protect me?
N: How do you think it’s going to look if you prosecute this vulnerable, young girl with a big heart?
H: Who broke the law.
N: She came forward and she turned him in. You prosecute this case, Hank, I’m going to take it right to trial.
H: You don’t have a case.
N: Oh, yeah? The Llantano County DA’s gonna prosecute a very young, vulnerable, very religious girl. Now, you tell me who the jury will peg for the villain and who they’ll peg for the damsel in distress. Answer me one question. Are you out to convict Rebecca Lewis or are you out to take one more swipe at Todd Manning? Because she’s not Todd. So why don’t you bury all of this ugliness with him and let her go.
H: I can’t do that.
N: Have I ever asked you for a favor?
H: No. NO, you haven’t. And I appreciate that. So don’t start now.
N: I am. I’ll owe you one. Let her go. Please?
H: Young lady, you and I are going to have a talk. We’re going to have a tough talk about the law.
RB: Nora?
N: I tried.
R: I’m ready.
H: Good. Listen, Rebecca, what you did was wrong, and you know it. Nobody made you the judge or the jury or anybody allowed to intervene just because they feel compassion. The law is not about compassion.ep N: Sometimes it is.
H: The law is about the rules. The same rules for everybody. That’s the only way it works. But I’m not going to charge you on this, Rebecca. You’ve been through enough, and as your attorney puts it, you’re very young and you can use a break.
RB: Oh, sweetheart!
N: You’re an okay guy, Hank Gannon, even for an ex-husband.
H: What I am doing here-
N: Is the right thing.
H: Yeah, well, I hope so. And remember, you own me one.
N: Ohh, I did way that, didn’t I?
H: Yeah. Well, my, my, look at the time. You ladies have kept me here far too long, I’ve got to go. (RB and Hank leave)
R: Ms. Gannon- thank you.
N: Oh, you-
R: Thank you very much. I really believe I would have gone to jail.
N: I’m glad I could help. I really am. I want to come out of this okay. I knew Todd Manning.
R: Then you know.
N: I know exactly what he can do to people. Rebecca, how about talking with a professional, you know, someone who can help you deal with the kind of trauma that you’ve been through, someone, I don’t know, who can make you understand?
R: I do understand. Ms. Gannon, don’t you think that we’re all capable of sin?
N: Well, it certainly seems that way.
R: And in all of us, there’s a goodness. A part of us that knows God’s love. Todd knew that, too, only he never let anyone else see that, except me. Oh, I’m going to miss him. I already do.
N: You really are very sweet. You’re the only person who will ever miss Todd Manning.
R: I don’t have much money, but I do have a job, and as soon as I can, I want to pay you.
N: Well, my hourly rate isn’t too obscene, I don’t think 20 minutes will cost too much.
R: Even so, maybe there’s something I can do for you.
N: Yes, you can get on with your life, and you can make it a good one.
R: Thank you.
N: If you ever need me, just call.
R: Oh, Ms. Gannon-
N: Yes?
R: How did you know that Mr. Gannon was here, that I was in trouble?
N: Powell told me.
R: Powell?
N: Yes. He’s a very good friend, and he’s a good guy. You should remember that. Goodbye.

B and P go to id Todd’s body with Hank. Hank says body is mangled, pretty sure, but need positive id. Hank has called Todd’s dad. B and P look. Hank isn’t there, so they leave message that it wasn’t Todd.

February 1, 1994

Luna: They would call if they went someplace else first, I mean, they know we’re waiting here, right?
Max: Bo said as soon as they finished identifying the body, they’d be here.
N: I used to think I was such a humanist.
L: What’s that, sugar?
N: Oh, I always used to talk about and believe so strongly in the instinctive good that’s in everybody, and here I am, sitting here wondering, hoping that someone I know has drowned in a river.
Marty: Todd Manning is not just someone, Nora. (door opens)
Max: What’s the news?
L: Was it him?
B: No, no, I’m sorry. The body wasn’t Todd.
N: Oh, no. Oh, my God.
Marty: He’s still out there.

B: (on phone) All right, thank you very much, thank you, I appreciate your time, captain. Bye-bye. When the police found out that the body they fished out of the river wasn’t Manning’s, they sent out teams to start searching the river banks again.
Max: Was there any luck?
B: Yes and no.
N: What does that man?
B: No, they didn’t find another body, but the river was partially frozen, and it created an ice dam further down stream. Now, they found a shoe there and they’re sure that it belongs to Todd.
N: Oh, how can they possibly know that a shoe belonged to Todd.
B: It was prison issue.
Marty: Then he’s dead, he’s got to be dead.
L: It’s all right, sugar, it’ll be all right.
Max: His body is under the ice?
B: That’s the assumption. And they feel that tonight the river might just freeze solid, but what that means is there’s a chance that they might not even get to it until maybe early spring.
Marty: What? And we have to wait that long until they can be sure?
B: I guess so.
L: But they are sure Todd is under there?
B: Oh, yeah. They think that it’s obviously, that’s what happened.ep Max: What about you? Is that where you think he is?

At Tina and Cain’s shower. B and N are in the hall; mock dancing.
B: I hope they have dancing, honey. We haven’t danced in a while. (kiss)
H: Hey, hey, hey.
B: Hey.
N: Hey! Late as usual!
H: Tough habit to break.
B: Let me ask you something, Hank. If you’re already late, why hurry?
H: Tough habit to break? No, look, I got caught up at the airport on an emergency.
N: Terrorists in Llanview?
H: Close. Murder suspect trying to flee the country, and a very troubled young woman caught up in a very painful situation with a baby.
B: I bet you thought this job would be a lot of fun when you first got elected, didn’t you?
H: Well, Bo, I’ll tell you, there are days when I would trade this in for pushing papers in an insurance company, but- I really like my job. I love it. What about you, Bo? Do you like what you’re doing?
B: Yeah. Sure. Yeah.
H: It just so happens that I’ve got some news for you.
Max: Bo, Nora, front and center, you’re on! Come on. Hank, so good to see you, nice of you to show up. Come on, up front, everybody’s waiting.
B: Okay.
H: Wait a minute, wait a minute, waiting for what?
Max: Waiting for their gift for Tina and Cain.
H: All right.
N: Hank was about to tell us-
H: That’s all right, go ahead, it’s not important.
N: No, it is-
H: Go! Hurry.

C and T open B and N’s gift.
C: Holy smokes!
B: 20 CD’s.
N: They are all rock and roll classics.
T: This is great!
B: And that’s only half your gift.
C: What, we get 20 more?
B: No, you get 10 free dance lessons from the world famous dance team, The Whirling Norbos.
C: Who? (B spins N around) Look at that, baby! Lessons with the champs. We’re going to be world-class hoofers!
N: Glad you said that. You are going to get dance lessons from the best dancers- in Llanview. We are going to teach you everything (start swaying hip to hip)
C: Oh, my.
N: -you possibly need to know- about dancing. Just dancing. Okay.
